Job Description
Crum & Forster is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Senior Network Engineer to support the design, implementation, security, and ongoing operation of the organization's enterprise network infrastructure. This role is responsible for ensuring the reliability, scalability, and security of network services across a primarily Azure-based hybrid environment, while also supporting critical on-premises infrastructure.
The Senior Network Engineer will serve as a key technical resource in the planning and execution of network architecture, cloud connectivity, security engineering, and operational support initiatives. This individual will work closely with Infrastructure, Cloud Engineering, Cybersecurity, and other technology teams to deliver resilient, compliant, scalable and secure network solutions that align with business objectives and enterprise standards of corporate and customer-facing systems.
This role is hybrid in our Glastonbury, CT, office 2-3 days per week.This role could also be remote with travel to Glastonbury, CT.
What you will do:
Network Architecture & Engineering
  • Design, implement, and maintain enterprise network infrastructure supporting hybrid cloud and on-premises environments.
  • Develop and support secure, scalable, and highly available network solutions across LAN, WAN, SD-WAN, VPN, wireless, and load balancing technologies.
  • Lead the design and implementation of resilient network topologies that support redundancy, failover, and business continuity requirements.
  • Administer and optimize network segmentation, routing, switching, and secure access controls across the enterprise.
  • Configure, manage, and support firewall platforms, with a strong emphasis on Fortinet technologies.
  • Evaluate existing network architecture and recommend improvements to increase performance, availability, security, and operational efficiency.
  • Ensure network designs and engineering practices comply with internal standards, regulatory obligations, and information security requirements.

Security Engineering & Operations
  • Implement, manage, and enhance enterprise network security controls across cloud and on-premises environments.
  • Support and administer core security and network technologies, including:
    • Fortinet firewalls
    • Switching and wireless platforms, including HP/Aruba
    • Intrusion detection and prevention systems (IDS/IPS)
    • Secure Access Service Edge (SASE) and Zero Trust networking solutions
    • Identity-based and role-based access controls
  • Perform security hardening and maintain secure configuration standards for network infrastructure.
  • Monitor network security posture and coordinate remediation of vulnerabilities, misconfigurations, and operational risks.
  • Partner with Cybersecurity teams on incident response activities, threat analysis, containment, root cause analysis, and post-incident improvement efforts.
  • Support audit, compliance, and governance activities related to network and security infrastructure.

Cloud & Hybrid Networking
  • Design and support secure hybrid network connectivity with primary focus on Microsoft Azure, while maintaining integration with on-premises environments.
  • Implement and support Azure networking services, including virtual networks, routing, ExpressRoute, VPN gateways, network security groups, and cloud-native firewall controls.
  • Collaborate with Cloud Engineering and Infrastructure teams to establish and enforce network guardrails, secure landing zone standards, and connectivity patterns.
  • Support secure communication for distributed applications, APIs, and microservices across hybrid environments.
  • Provide support for additional cloud connectivity requirements, including AWS where applicable.
  • Assist in the development of scalable network patterns that enable cloud adoption, modernization, and secure application delivery.

Collaboration Expectations
  • Serve as a senior technical contributor and trusted partner to Infrastructure, Cloud, and Cybersecurity teams.
  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior engineers and operational support staff.
  • Contribute to architectural discussions, project planning, and strategic technology initiatives.
  • Demonstrate sound judgment, accountability, and a proactive approach to identifying and resolving issues.
  • Foster a collaborative, service-oriented, and security-focused approach to network engineering and operations.

Operational Excellence
  • Own and enhance monitoring, observability, alerting and operational support processes for network and security infrastructure.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve complex network issues across multiple platforms, environments and technologies.
  • Participate in on-call support rotation for critical infrastructure incidents and security-related events.
  • Develop, maintain and improve technical documentation, operational procedures, architecture diagrams and support runbooks.
  • Identify opportunities to improve service reliability, reduce operational complexity, and modernize network capabilities.
  • Stay informed of emerging technologies, industry best practices, and evolving security threats relevant to enterprise networking.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

  • Bachelor's degree from accredited institution in Information Technology, Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field; equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered
  • 6+ years of progressive experience in enterprise network engineering, including enterprise infrastructure design, implementation, and support.
  • Demonstrated experience supporting hybrid cloud network environments, with strong expertise in Microsoft Azure networking.
  • Hands-on experience configuring and administering Fortinet firewalls in enterprise environments.
  • Strong knowledge of routing, switching, VPNs, SD-WAN, wireless networking, load balancing, and network segmentation.
  • Experience with high availability design, redundancy planning, disaster recovery, and business continuity concepts.
  • Solid understanding of network security principles, including firewall policy management, IDS/IPS, Zero Trust, SASE, and secure access controls.
  • Experience troubleshooting complex network performance, connectivity, and security issues in both cloud and on-premises environments.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate technical concepts clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities, work independently, and contribute effectively within cross-functional teams.
