Senior Engineer, Fuel Handling and Dry Storage
Company: System One
Location: (Remote/Offsite)
Position Type: Long-Term Contract
Pay Rate: $52.00 - $85.00/hour
Schedule: 40 hours/week
Position Overview
System One is seeking an experienced Senior Fuel Handling & Dry Storage System Engineer to support the design, analysis, and qualification of nuclear fuel handling and dry storage systems for advanced nuclear energy projects. This role is responsible for the engineering design of spent fuel pool systems, dry cask storage equipment, and associated mechanical systems while supporting licensing, regulatory compliance, and multidisciplinary engineering activities.
The ideal candidate will have experience with nuclear fuel handling systems, mechanical system design, and engineering analyses within highly regulated nuclear or energy environments.
Key Responsibilities
  • Design spent fuel pool systems, dry cask storage equipment, and fuel handling systems.
  • Develop engineering deliverables including drawings, calculations, specifications, design basis documents, and technical reports.
  • Lead and participate in design reviews throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Provide system design input and review engineering analyses including thermal, structural, seismic, shielding, and criticality evaluations.
  • Apply applicable engineering codes and standards including ASME BPVC, ANS, ASTM, IEEE, NFPA, and other industry standards.
  • Analyze and incorporate nuclear regulatory requirements into system designs.
  • Support engineering evaluations, design verification, and system qualification activities.
  • Oversee fabrication, manufacturing, testing, and delivery of fuel handling and dry storage equipment.
  • Coordinate with mechanical, civil, instrumentation & controls, and nuclear engineering teams to develop integrated system designs.
  • Manage technical interfaces with equipment vendors and support supplier design reviews.
  • Develop system requirements, design specifications, and performance criteria.
  • Support testing programs, commissioning activities, and system qualification.
  • Provide engineering support for Safety Analysis Reports (SAR) and licensing activities.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Nuclear Engineering, or a related engineering discipline from an accredited university.
  • Minimum of 5 years of engineering experience.
  • Experience designing and/or supporting mechanical systems, equipment, or structures.
  • Experience with nuclear fuel handling systems, spent fuel pools, dry cask storage systems, or comparable high-performance engineered systems.
  • Strong technical writing, communication, and presentation skills.
  • Ability to work independently while contributing within multidisciplinary engineering teams.
  • Experience balancing multiple engineering priorities and resolving technical challenges.
  • Experience working under quality assurance programs such as ASME NQA-1, ISO 9001, or similar quality standards.
  • Strong attention to detail with a commitment to technical excellence.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Commercial nuclear power or advanced reactor experience.
  • Experience with radiological controls at nuclear power plants.
  • Knowledge of nuclear licensing and regulatory requirements.
  • Experience supporting fabrication, commissioning, startup, or system qualification activities.
  • Familiarity with Safety Analysis Reports (SAR) and licensing documentation.
  • Experience coordinating engineering activities with suppliers and contractors.
