What does a senior pastor do?

A senior pastor serves as the leader of a church or parish. It is the senior pastor’s responsibility to engage in community events, preach, teach, and manage the church organization. The senior pastor may be the head of a large congregation and multiple church employees (such as secretaries, musical leaders, or junior pastors), the only paid member of a church, or a volunteer nominated for the role. Depending on the denomination of the church, a senior pastor may stay in one place all their life or move from church to church as needed.

What is a senior pastor?

Senior Pastors are the primary leaders of a church, responsible for overseeing all aspects of ministry, preaching, and providing spiritual guidance to the congregation. They often lead worship services, manage church staff, and set the vision and direction for the church. Senior Pastors also provide counseling, officiate at ceremonies such as weddings and funerals, and engage with the broader community on behalf of their church. Their role is both spiritual and administrative, requiring strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a senior pastor, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Senior Pastor, you need a deep theological knowledge, strong leadership abilities, and typically a seminary degree or equivalent pastoral training. Familiarity with church management software, online communication platforms, and sermon preparation tools is common. Exceptional interpersonal skills, empathy, and effective communication make someone stand out in this role. These qualities are crucial for providing spiritual guidance, managing church operations, and fostering a supportive, engaged congregation.

What are some common challenges senior pastors face in leading a congregation and how can they be addressed?

Senior Pastors often encounter challenges such as balancing administrative duties with spiritual leadership, managing diverse congregational expectations, and fostering effective communication among staff and church members. Building a strong support team, delegating responsibilities, and prioritizing regular self-care can help address these challenges. Additionally, ongoing training in leadership, conflict resolution, and team collaboration is beneficial for maintaining a healthy church environment.

  • Spiritual & Personal: Evidences a mature, growing relationship with Jesus Christ. Meets biblical qualifications for an elder. Genuine love for God's people; approachable and available. Man of prayer, Spirit-led, and committed to discipleship. Models healthy rhythms of work, rest, and family life. Emotionally healthy and relationally mature. Servant-leader with humility and integrity.
  • Family: If married, Senior Pastor's wife is willing to participate in church life in a volunteer capacity.
  • Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: In-depth knowledge of the Bible and C&MA doctrine. Strong biblical communicator with clarity and relevance. Ability to interact with a variety of individuals in a caring, professional, and tactful manner. Visionary yet collaborative; able to lead through change with grace and wisdom. Demonstrated commitment to the spiritual growth and health of a local church. Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information. Ability to operate within and uphold church by-laws and denominational guidelines. Ability to pass background checks and maintain a valid driver's license and reliable transportation.

Workload & Compensation: Part-time (approximately 20 hours/week) exempt pastoral position with potential to grow into full time. Compensation aligned with education and experience.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Preaching & Teaching (35–45%): Prepare and deliver weekly biblically based preaching and teaching that is doctrinally sound and truth-telling. Provide oversight for all ministries to ensure theological alignment with C&MA doctrine. Equip the church through classes, Bible studies, and discipleship pathways.
  • Vision & Strategic Leadership (15–20%): Seek the Lord's direction for the church and clearly articulate a Spirit-led vision. Collaborate with the Elders to establish ministry priorities and long-term direction. Encourage a "mindshift" toward immediate kingdom work, helping the church transition from talking to doing. Ensure ministry alignment with the mission and values of the C&MA. Lead the church with a multi-generational focus, fostering ministry that engages children, youth, adults, and seniors together in discipleship, worship, and mission.
  • Shepherding & Pastoral Care (15–20%): Provide pastoral care through prayer, visitation, counseling, and crisis support. Lead or oversee weddings, funerals, dedications, baptisms, and other pastoral functions. Equip and mobilize leaders and volunteers to participate in pastoral care. Demonstrate relational warmth, empathy, and approachability. Serve in a way that strengthens unity and discipleship.
  • Leadership of Ministry Teams (10–20%): Oversee ministry team leadership; provide clarity, encouragement, accountability, and support.
