Senior Operator information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a senior operator?

To excel as a Senior Operator, you typically need in-depth knowledge of production processes, strong troubleshooting abilities, and relevant experience, often supported by a technical diploma or certification. Familiarity with industrial control systems, PLCs, SCADA software, and safety protocols is essential. Leadership, attention to detail, and effective communication are important soft skills to manage teams and ensure smooth operations. These competencies are crucial for maintaining production efficiency, ensuring safety, and minimizing downtime in complex industrial environments.

What are the typical challenges a senior operator might face when managing a production shift?

Senior Operators often encounter challenges such as troubleshooting equipment malfunctions, ensuring team members adhere to safety protocols, and maintaining production efficiency under tight deadlines. They are also responsible for coordinating communication between various departments, quickly adapting to changes in production schedules, and mentoring less experienced operators. Success in this role requires strong problem-solving skills, leadership abilities, and a proactive approach to process improvements.

What is the difference between Senior Operator vs Process Technician?

AspectSenior OperatorProcess Technician
Required CredentialsHigh school diploma or equivalent; often additional certifications in equipment or safetyHigh school diploma; certifications in process control or safety may be preferred
Work EnvironmentManufacturing plants, refineries, or production facilitiesIndustrial settings, manufacturing plants, or chemical processing facilities
Job ResponsibilitiesOversees operations, monitors equipment, troubleshoots issues, and ensures safetyMaintains and calibrates equipment, assists in process control, and supports production

Both roles operate in similar industrial environments and require related certifications. Senior Operators typically have more responsibilities in overseeing operations and troubleshooting, while Process Technicians focus on maintaining and calibrating equipment. The roles often overlap, but Senior Operators usually have more experience and supervisory duties.

What is a senior operator?

Senior Operators are experienced professionals responsible for overseeing and managing the operations of machinery, equipment, or production processes in industries such as manufacturing, energy, or logistics. They ensure that operations run smoothly, efficiently, and safely while adhering to company policies and regulations. Senior Operators often train and supervise junior staff, troubleshoot technical issues, and may be involved in process optimization and reporting. Their extensive knowledge and leadership skills are vital for minimizing downtime and maintaining high standards of productivity.

Job description

Promise Robotics is pioneering Physical AI for homebuilding - a rapidly growing, venture-backed company bringing together AI, robotics, and manufacturing to help the homebuilding industry meet the growing demand for housing. Our robotic systems, built and operated inside  AI-powered factories, give the industry the production capacity, consistency, and speed to build more high-quality homes than traditional methods allow. Our team spans AI researchers and roboticists to factory operators, technicians, and production teams - all building the future of homebuilding together.

We're building physical AI for housing - and unlike most of the field, our robots are already in production, fabricating real structures and generating real operational data every day across multiple factories.

We're looking for a Senior Robotics Software Developer to join our team and contribute to developing cutting-edge solutions for our core robotic manufacturing technologies. This is a senior IC role with architectural ownership and mentorship responsibility.

Why join us?
  • Purpose-Driven Work:Contribute to projects with significant social, economic, and environmental impact.

  • Growth Opportunities:Be part of a growth-stage startup with substantial upside and leadership potential.

  • Cutting-Edge Technology:Work on state-of-the-art robotics solutions at the intersection of construction and automation.

  • Collaborative Culture:Join a diverse, high-performing team committed to continuous learning and innovation.

What you'll do:
  • Lead the development of robotic simulators  - set up and extend simulation environments and test scenarios that mirror our production cells.

  • Lead the effort in motion planning and optimization - develop and optimize motion-planning and collision-checking behaviors in ROS 2 / MoveIt2.

  • Develop perception components - implement object detection, pose estimation, and point-cloud processing tasks for material handling and inspection.

  • Write clean, tested code - produce well-documented C++ and Python, backed by unit and integration tests.

  • Debug integration issues - help troubleshoot software-hardware issues alongside the robotics and hardware teams.

  • Set the engineering bar - define standards for architecture, testing, and code quality; lead code reviews; mentor junior and mid-level developers.

What you'll need to succeed:
  • Degree in Computer Science, Robotics, Mechatronics, or related fields (Masters/Ph.D. preferred) plus 5+ years of relevant robotics software experience.

  • Expert-level C++ and Python, with a track record of shipping production-quality robotics software.

  • Strong fundamentals in algorithms, data structures, and basic control concepts.

  • Deep ROS 2 and MoveIt2 experience - motion planning, collision checking, and trajectory optimization (e.g., OMPL, CHOMP/STOMP/TrajOpt-style approaches).

  • Ability to solve complex problems involving multi-disciplinary engineering concepts.

  • Strong hands-on experience with a robotics simulator (Gazebo, Isaac Sim, MuJoCo, or similar) including physics simulation.

  • Exposure to computer vision or perception concepts.

  • Eagerness to learn, take feedback, and work both independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced startup.

  • Willingness to work onsite at our R&D labs and production facilities in Edmonton and Calgary, Alberta.

Preferred Skills:

  • Experiential knowledge using Isaac Sim / Omniverse or similar simulation tools.

  • Applied or research experience with vision-language-action (VLA) models (e.g., OpenVLA, 0, RT-2-style) or LLM-based task and motion planning.

  • Industrial robot programming (KUKA, ABB, or Fanuc) and familiarity with vendor sensor/communication interfaces.

  • Sensor systems: industrial cameras, depth sensors, LiDAR, force/torque sensors, laser range finders/projectors.

  • Digital-twin technologies for validation and predictive maintenance.

  • Machine learning / deep learning applied to robotics.

  • Working knowledge of CSA Z434 and ISO 10218-2 safety standards for industrial robot systems and cell integration.

  • Experience in a fast-paced startup or scaling deep-tech environment.

Benefits:
Competitive salary: we believe in data-driven, equitable compensation decisions. We recently completed a compensation review and implemented salary bands that enable us to pay mid to above-average Canadian salaries across various industries.
