What is the difference between Senior Next Generation Sequencing vs Laboratory Technician?

AspectSenior Next Generation SequencingLaboratory Technician
CredentialsBachelor's or Master's in Molecular Biology, Genetics, or related field; experience in NGSAssociate's or Bachelor's in Life Sciences or related field; basic lab skills
Work EnvironmentResearch labs, biotech companies, or clinical labs focusing on sequencing projectsGeneral laboratory settings performing routine tests and sample preparations
ResponsibilitiesDesigning experiments, analyzing NGS data, troubleshooting sequencing issuesPreparing samples, operating lab equipment, recording data

While both roles work within laboratory settings, Senior Next Generation Sequencing professionals focus on advanced sequencing techniques and data analysis, requiring specialized knowledge. Laboratory Technicians support daily lab operations with routine tasks. The senior role involves more technical expertise and project management, whereas technicians handle sample processing and equipment maintenance.
