What Does a Senior Network Engineer Do?

A senior network engineer builds and maintains data communication networks for a company or organization. As a senior network engineer, you have several years of industry experience and lead a team of junior network engineers and network administrators to ensure both the local area network (LAN) and wide area network (WAN) are functioning properly. Your job duties include installing software and hardware, creating a layout plan for cables, and troubleshooting and solving problems that arise with the networks for which you are responsible.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Senior Network Engineer, and why are they important?

To excel as a Senior Network Engineer, you need a deep understanding of network architecture, protocols, security, and typically a bachelor's degree in computer science or a related field. Expertise in configuring and troubleshooting routers, switches, firewalls, and experience with tools like Cisco IOS, Juniper, or cloud networking platforms, along with certifications such as CCNP or CCIE, are highly valued. Strong problem-solving abilities, communication skills, and leadership are crucial for designing solutions and collaborating with IT teams. These competencies ensure reliable, secure, and scalable network infrastructures that support critical business operations.

What are some common challenges faced by Senior Network Engineers when managing large-scale network infrastructures?

Senior Network Engineers often encounter challenges such as integrating new technologies into legacy systems, ensuring network security across a growing number of devices, and maintaining high availability while performing upgrades or troubleshooting. Balancing the demands of multiple stakeholders—like IT, security, and business units—can also be complex. Staying updated with evolving protocols and proactively identifying potential performance bottlenecks are crucial parts of effectively managing large-scale environments.

What are Senior Network Engineers?

Senior Network Engineers are experienced IT professionals responsible for designing, implementing, and managing complex computer networks within organizations. They oversee network infrastructure, troubleshoot issues, ensure network security, and optimize performance. Typically, they lead network projects, mentor junior staff, and collaborate with other IT teams to support business operations. Their expertise covers a range of technologies, including routers, switches, firewalls, and cloud networking.

GENERAL SCOPE & SUMMARY

We are seeking a seasoned Senior Network Engineer to join our infrastructure team. This role is critical for maintaining the stability, security, and performance of our global enterprise network. You will serve as a technical lead, driving architectural improvements, assisting with daily requests, and ensuring our perimeter defenses are robust.

Key Responsibilities

  • Expertise in Firewalls: Minimum 5+ years of hands-on experience managing and troubleshooting Palo Alto Networks (PAN-OS) or Cisco ASA firewalls. Experience with Site-to-Site VPNs is essential. Global Protect and/or AnyConnect is a plus.
  • Core Networking: Deep proficiency in routing and switching protocols (BGP, OSPF, EIGRP, Spanning Tree) within Cisco or Juniper environments.
  • Advanced Troubleshooting: Ability to perform complex packet analysis using Wireshark to resolve intermittent connectivity issues.
  • On-Call Rotation: This position requires participation in a weekly on-call rotation (one week every 4-6 weeks) to provide 24/7 support for mission-critical network outages.
  • Troubleshooting: Isolate and resolve complex network connectivity and performance issues (latency, packet loss) across OSI Layers 1-4.
  • Documentation: Maintain accurate network diagrams, configuration records, and change control logs to support operational consistency.
  • Upgrades & Maintenances: Perform routine system maintenance, firmware updates, and scheduled hardware refreshes with minimal disruption.
  • Vendor Coordination: Working directly with ISPs and hardware vendors to resolve circuit outages or manage RMAs (Return Merchandise Authorizations).
  • Security Posture: Implementing network segmentation and access control policies (like Cisco ISE) to align with cybersecurity standards.
  • Performance Optimization: Monitoring network health metrics to proactively identify and remediate bottlenecks before they impact end-users.
  • Project Leadership: Leading small-scale deployment projects, such as setting up new datacenter sites or integrating hybrid cloud environments.
  • Mentorship: Providing guidance to junior engineers and technicians to assist in their professional development.

Required/Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience: 6-9 years of hands-on experience in enterprise network deployment and troubleshooting.
  • Technical Skills: Proficiency with Palo Alto Next-Generation Firewalls (NGFW), Cisco ASA, and/or Juniper; strong command of VLANs, subnetting, and IPsec VPN tunnels. Datacenter experience
  • Certifications: CCNA or CCNP (Enterprise/Security) preferred. PCNSE (Palo Alto Networks Certified Network Security Engineer) is a significant plus.
  • Soft Skills: Excellent analytical problem-solving skills and the ability to communicate technical concepts to team members & non-technical stakeholders.
  • Experience with VoIP and collaboration technologies.
  • A solid understanding of application protocols
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to work outside normal business hours when needed
