Senior Medical Imaging Software Engineer information

What does a senior medical imaging software engineer do?

A Senior Medical Imaging Software Engineer designs, develops, and maintains software used for processing and analyzing medical images, such as X-rays, MRIs, and CT scans. They work closely with radiologists, clinicians, and other engineers to ensure the software meets clinical needs and complies with healthcare regulations. Their responsibilities often include optimizing image processing algorithms, integrating software with medical devices, and ensuring the accuracy and security of sensitive patient data. Senior engineers also mentor junior team members and may participate in research and development of new imaging technologies.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a senior medical imaging software engineer?

To thrive as a Senior Medical Imaging Software Engineer, you need deep expertise in computer science, medical imaging algorithms, and strong programming skills, typically with a relevant degree and several years of experience in medical technology. Familiarity with tools and systems like DICOM, PACS, C++, Python, and image processing frameworks, along with possible certifications in medical device software development, is highly valuable. Strong problem-solving ability, attention to detail, and effective communication skills set top performers apart in this field. These competencies ensure the development of reliable, innovative imaging solutions that meet clinical requirements and regulatory standards.

What are some common challenges faced by senior medical imaging software engineers when developing new features?

Senior Medical Imaging Software Engineers often encounter challenges such as ensuring regulatory compliance (e.g., FDA or CE requirements), maintaining robust data security and patient privacy, and optimizing performance for large, complex imaging datasets. Additionally, balancing the integration of new algorithms with legacy systems while collaborating closely with radiologists and clinical users can be demanding. Overcoming these challenges requires strong communication skills, a deep understanding of medical imaging standards like DICOM, and a proactive approach to cross-functional teamwork.

What is the difference between Senior Medical Imaging Software Engineer vs Medical Imaging Software Engineer?

AspectSenior Medical Imaging Software EngineerMedical Imaging Software Engineer

Job Description
Job Summary
As part of the Cox Automotive family, Inspections and Imaging is responsible for providing innovative technical solutions supporting wholesale and non-wholesale workflows. Our inspection solutions enable a vehicle's condition to be documented and graded, allowing buyers, sellers and financial institutions the critical data needed to make informed decisions. Primary technologies include TypeScript, Java, Node.js, React, Postgres, Rest APIs, AWS and Claude Code, among others.
Senior Software Engineer applies secure software engineering principles to the design, development, testing, maintenance, and evaluation of software and cloud infrastructure. As a senior team member, you will drive technical excellence, mentor junior engineers, and champion best practices in cloud-native, DevOps-focused software engineering. This role collaborates closely with teammates to understand business requirements, contribute to architectural discussions, and deliver scalable, resilient, and secure systems. As part of a corporate wide AI transformation initiative, this role will also incorporate the responsible use of AI-assisted development tools to streamline coding, testing, troubleshooting, and documentation activities across the SDLC.
Primary Duties and Key Responsibilities
    • Contribute technical and procedural expertise to support team development efforts across assigned applications or system components, including appropriate use of AI-assisted tools during daily engineering tasks.
    • Participate in design and development discussions, using both personal analysis and AI-supported exploration to help clarify technical options and desired outcomes.
    • Write high-quality code along with unit, integration, and system tests for business-critical components, using AI assistance to increase test coverage and reduce repetitive work while validating all AI-generated output.
    • Ensure quality, performance, security, and adherence to specifications for assigned feature development and adjacent system interactions, leveraging AI to analyze code quality or identify potential issues.
    • Support troubleshooting and root-cause analysis by combining traditional debugging techniques with AI-guided investigation to accelerate discovery and remediation.
    • Contribute to the modernization of legacy components through refactoring, migration planning, and use of AI tools to analyze existing patterns and propose alternatives.
    • Apply secure coding practices and use AI-enabled scanning or analysis tools to help identify vulnerabilities or improvement opportunities.
    • Participate in identifying software, server, or network bottlenecks by gathering diagnostics and evaluating potential fixes, including the use of AI tools to explore optimization options.
    • Mentor and support junior and mid-level engineers through technical guidance and peer programming.

Required Experience, Knowledge, and Skills
    • Applicants must currently be authorized to work in the United States for any employer without current or future sponsorship. No OPT, CPT, STEM/OPT or visa sponsorship now or in future.
    • Bachelor's degree in a related discipline and 4 years of experience in a related field, or equivalent combinations such as a master's degree and up to 2 years of experience, or 8 years of experience with no degree.
    • Experience in developing with TypeScript, Java, Node.js, React.
    • Hands-on experience developing software using modern programming languages, frameworks, and cloud technologies.
    • Ability to evaluate technical requirements, follow architectural patterns, and contribute to maintainable and scalable implementations.
    • Skilled in building partnerships, driving innovation, focusing on execution, and striving for excellence in engineering work.
    • Communicate and explain engineering concepts and solutions to team members with less technical experience

Senior-Software Level Expectations
    • Mentorship & Leadership: Provide technical mentorship on design patterns, code quality, and career growth.
    • Ownership & Initiative: Take full ownership of features or systems; proactively identify and solve problems.
    • Continuous Learning: Stay up to date with advancements in cloud computing, DevOps, AI, and software best practices.
    • Adaptability: Thrive in dynamic environments and pivot easily when priorities shift.
    • Collaboration & Communication: Communicate technical concepts clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
    • Decision-Making: Influence architectural decisions and contribute to the long-term technical strategy.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with or strong familiarity developing REST APIs using an AWS serverless framework.
  • AWS certifications (Developer, Solutions Architect, or DevOps) highly preferred.
  • Exposure to AI-assisted coding tools (GitHub Copilot, CodeWhisperer, ClaudeCode, etc.), especially in production or experimentation contexts.
  • Experience mentoring junior engineers or leading small development initiatives.

Drug Testing
To be employed in this role, you'll need to clear a pre-employment drug test. Cox Automotive does not currently administer a pre-employment drug test for marijuana for this position. However, we are a drug-free workplace, so the possession, use or being under the influence of drugs illegal under federal or state law during work hours, on company property and/or in company vehicles is prohibited.
