Part-Time Adolescent Mathematics Instructor

Knoxville Montessori School is seeking a part-time Mathematics Instructor for our Adolescent Program for the 20262027 school year. This role is designed for a skilled math educator who enjoys working with middle and high school students in small-group settings and can support strong, consistent mathematics instruction within a Montessori adolescent environment.

Position Summary

The Part-Time Adolescent Mathematics Instructor provides small-group mathematics instruction for students in grades 712 using a KMS-approved structured mathematics curriculum. The curriculum sequence, lesson structure, and student assignments will be provided. The instructor is responsible for preparing for lessons, teaching small groups, supporting students during open math help blocks, grading assignments, recording progress, and communicating follow-up needs to the Adolescent Program team.

This role is ideal for someone who is strong in mathematics, organized, warm with adolescents, and able to balance high expectations with encouragement and support.

Schedule

Instructional hours are:

Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday
8:30 a.m.11:45 a.m.

The schedule includes approximately 67 small-group math instruction blocks each week, along with 12 open math support blocks.

Additional paid planning and grading time may be scheduled weekly, including the possibility of Wednesday prep/grading time as needed.

The school year includes approximately 30 instructional weeks.

Estimated weekly hours: 1518 hours per week, depending on planning, grading, and support needs.

Primary Responsibilities

The Part-Time Adolescent Mathematics Instructor will:

  • Prepare and deliver small-group math lessons using the KMS-approved structured mathematics curriculum.
  • Teach adolescent mathematics groups ranging from Pre-Algebra through Pre-Calculus, depending on student placement and course needs.
  • Review the provided curriculum sequence in advance and prepare needed materials.
  • Provide open math support for students needing clarification, re-teaching, correction work, or additional practice.
  • Grade assignments and provide timely, useful feedback to students.
  • Record lessons, student progress, and follow-up needs in the schools designated platform.
  • Communicate clearly with the Adolescent Program team regarding student progress, concerns, pacing, and needed support.
  • Support students in developing mathematical confidence, accuracy, persistence, problem-solving skills, and independence.
  • Follow KMS guidelines for classroom culture, student support, documentation, professionalism, confidentiality, and communication.
  • Participate in limited planning or check-in meetings as needed to support alignment with the Adolescent Program.

Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelors degree required.
  • Strong mathematics background.
  • Experience teaching or tutoring middle school and/or high school mathematics.
  • Ability to teach mathematics through at least Algebra II.

Preferred

  • Degree in mathematics, education, science, engineering, or a related field.
  • Ability to support Pre-Calculus instruction.
  • Classroom teaching experience.
  • Experience working with adolescents.
  • Comfort supporting students with varied learning profiles.
