What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Senior Material Artist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Senior Material Artist, you need advanced skills in digital texturing, shading, and material creation, typically supported by experience in 3D art and a strong portfolio. Mastery of tools like Substance Painter, Substance Designer, Photoshop, and familiarity with game engines such as Unreal Engine or Unity is essential. Strong attention to detail, creativity, and the ability to collaborate effectively with other artists and developers are standout soft skills. These abilities ensure the creation of realistic, high-quality materials that enhance visual storytelling and meet production standards in games and digital media.

What are Senior Material Artists?

Senior Material Artists are experienced digital artists who specialize in creating high-quality textures and materials for 3D models used in video games, films, and other visual media. They work closely with other artists and technical teams to ensure materials look realistic and meet the artistic vision of the project. Their responsibilities often include developing complex shader networks, optimizing materials for performance, and mentoring junior artists. A Senior Material Artist typically has a strong understanding of both artistic principles and technical workflows.

What is the difference between Senior Material Artist vs Texture Artist?

AspectSenior Material ArtistTexture Artist
CredentialsTypically requires a strong portfolio, experience in material creation, and proficiency in software like Substance Painter, Maya, or 3ds MaxRequires a portfolio demonstrating texturing skills, proficiency in similar software, and understanding of surface detailing
Work EnvironmentWorks in game or film studios, collaborating with lighting, modeling, and shading teamsWorks in similar environments, focusing on creating surface textures for models used in games, films, or animations
Industry UsageCommonly used in AAA game development, VFX, and animation studiosWidely used across gaming, film, and animation industries

The main difference is that a Senior Material Artist specializes in creating complex, realistic materials and shaders, often overseeing the material pipeline, while a Texture Artist focuses on creating detailed surface textures for models. Both roles require similar skills and software knowledge, but the Senior Material Artist typically has more experience and responsibilities in shader development and material optimization.

How does a Senior Material Artist typically collaborate with other departments during a game development project?

Senior Material Artists work closely with environment artists, technical artists, and lighting teams to ensure that materials are visually consistent and optimized for game performance. They often participate in cross-functional meetings to align their work with the project's artistic vision and technical requirements. Effective communication is essential, as they may need to provide feedback, share best practices, and troubleshoot material-related issues with colleagues from different disciplines. This collaborative approach helps ensure cohesive visuals and smooth integration of assets into the game engine.

Overview

About this Position:

The Sr. 3D Artist will drive the creation of high-end, photoreal automotive content across cinematic, real-time, and still imagery pipelines. This role is responsible for crafting premium visual storytelling for global automotive brands spanning virtual photography, cinematic sequences, and environment creation while operating within a scalable, production-ready Unreal Engine pipeline.

The ideal candidate brings proven industry experience, a strong portfolio of shipped work, and the ability to collaborate closely with creative leadership in a live, iterative production environment.

What You'll Do:

  • Real-Time Mastery: Author and maintain clean, modular Unreal scenes using Master/Sub-Sequences and Level Streaming.
  • Infrastructure & Standards: Operate within Perforce-managed environments, adhering to version control and publishing standards.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner with teams to ensure assets, materials, and lighting scale across multiple vehicles and productions.
  • Asset Pipeline: Utilize Maya for expert asset prep, scene setup, and pipeline integration.
  • Creative Execution: Partner with directors and producers to execute evolving briefs and provide artistic/technical guidance.
  • Production Agility: Operate effectively in fast-paced, ambiguous environments with incomplete product data.
  • Scalability: Contribute to best practices for a scalable, multi-vehicle production pipeline.

What You Bring:

  • Automotive Expertise: Proven experience in high-end automotive, product, or cinematic visualization.
  • Advanced Unreal Proficiency: Expert knowledge of Sequencer, Lumen, path tracing, lighting, and rendering.
  • Technical Toolkit: Strong Maya skills and deep understanding of real-time vs. offline rendering workflows.
  • Pipeline Literacy: Experience working within version-controlled pipelines (Perforce preferred).
  • Artistic Eye: Strong grasp of lighting, composition, material realism, and cinematic storytelling.
  • Direct Review Experience: Proven ability to iterate with creative leadership in live review settings.

Even better if you bring:

  • Specialized Rendering: Familiarity with Substrate materials, advanced shading, and master material systems.
  • Optimization & Scale: Experience building scalable environments and reusable assets with a focus on real-time optimization.
  • Post-Production: Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite for final image polish and delivery.

Why It's Great to Work Here:

    • Entrepreneurial - Build something new. Shoot for the moon.
  • We offer comprehensive benefits and 'work perks' like great options for medical / dental / vision insurance, 401(k) with company matching, unlimited PTO, generous paid parental leave, tuition reimbursement, family forming assistance reimbursement, pet adoption assistance + "pawternity" leave, etc.
  • We have a hybrid work schedule (4 days a week in office / 1 day from wherever your heart desires).
  • We're part of Publicis Groupe which is a huge global network, so there are many resources that come with that like Business Resource Groups for a variety of communities like Publicis Parents, VivaWomen, Egalite, etc.
  • We give back to our communities with our annual Day of Good and volunteer opportunities throughout the year.
  • We love to grow our talent and promote from within whenever possible, and we offer professional development trainings and regular structured performance reviews.
  • We have a lot fun! We have a whole committee called "Team Fun" that plans parties and events for us to celebrate birthdays, holidays, cultural moments, etc. Some recent fun events include a flower bouquet bar, origami lessons, and hearing from creative entrepreneurs at our Moonshot speaker series.
