Job description

Senior Engineering Technician

Department: Engineering
Reports To: Engineering Manager, Director of Engineering, or Designated Leader
FLSA Status: Exempt

Position Summary

The Senior Engineering Technician provides advanced technical support to Engineering through electronic and mechanical design activities, including printed circuit board (PCB) layout, schematic entry, CAD modeling, engineering drawings, and technical documentation. This position supports product development, design modifications, and manufacturing release activities by translating engineering requirements into accurate design outputs.

The Senior Engineering Technician works independently on assigned projects and collaborates with Engineering, Manufacturing, and Quality teams to ensure designs are properly documented, manufacturable, and meet customer, regulatory, and product requirements.

Essential Functions

The following duties are representative of the position and are not intended to be an exhaustive list of all responsibilities.

CAD Design and Engineering Documentation

  • Create and modify 2D drawings, 3D CAD models, assemblies, and detailed engineering documentation using CAD software.
  • Develop electronics, cable assembly, mechanical, and manufacturing documentation.
  • Create mechanical drawings, assembly drawings, wiring diagrams, assembly instructions, test procedures, bills of materials (BOMs), and related technical documents.
  • Maintain CAD libraries, drawing templates, and documentation standards.
  • Ensure drawings and documentation accurately reflect product requirements and approved revisions.

PCB Design and Electronic Design Support

  • Create and modify printed circuit board (PCB) layouts based on engineering requirements and design specifications.
  • Perform schematic entry, component placement, routing, and design updates as required.
  • Support the review, troubleshooting, and improvement of PCB designs and associated documentation.
  • Maintain electronic design files and documentation in accordance with established procedures and quality standards.

Product Development and Manufacturing Support

  • Support engineering teams during product development, prototype builds, and design modifications.
  • Prepare documentation packages required for manufacturing release and production support.
  • Collaborate with Manufacturing and Quality teams to resolve documentation issues and implement product improvements.
  • Assist with evaluation and implementation of engineering changes and design revisions.
  • Support manufacturing and test operations by communicating product design concepts and troubleshooting techniques for diagnosing technical issues.

Prototype and Technical Support

  • Support prototype assembly, testing, evaluation, and troubleshooting activities.
  • Assist in identifying design issues and recommending solutions within assigned areas of responsibility.
  • Provide technical support to internal stakeholders related to CAD files, drawings, PCB documentation, and product configuration.

Required Qualifications

  • Associate degree in Electronics, Engineering Technology, CAD Design, or a related technical field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Five (5) or more years of experience in CAD design, PCB layout, engineering documentation, or related technical design support.
  • Proficiency with 3D CAD software such as SolidWorks or equivalent.
  • Experience with PCB layout and schematic capture tools such as Altium Designer or similar platforms.
  • Ability to interpret engineering drawings, schematics, specifications, and technical documentation.
  • Demonstrated electronics troubleshooting skills, including use of oscilloscopes, digital multimeters (DMMs), soldering equipment, and wiring techniques.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to documentation accuracy.
  • Ability to work independently while effectively collaborating with engineers and cross-functional teams.
  • Strong organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience supporting aerospace, defense, instrumentation, medical device, industrial, or other highly regulated manufacturing environments.
  • Experience working within a formal Quality Management System (QMS), including AS9100, ISO 9001, or similar standards.
  • Experience with engineering change orders (ECOs), configuration management, and product lifecycle documentation.
  • Knowledge of electronic assemblies, PCB manufacturing processes, and mechanical fabrication methods.
  • Experience with SolidWorks assemblies, sheet metal design, injection molded components, or related mechanical design applications.

Physical Demands

  • Prolonged periods of sitting and computer use requiring repetitive hand, finger, and arm movements.
  • Frequent use of computer systems, design software, and technical documentation tools.
  • Occasional standing, walking, bending, stooping, crouching, reaching, or climbing.
  • Occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, or pulling of materials weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Visual acuity required for detailed design work, including close vision, color recognition, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Requires concentration, problem-solving skills, mathematical aptitude, organization, and effective written and verbal communication.

Work Environment

This position is primarily performed in a professional engineering, laboratory, and manufacturing environment with occasional exposure to production areas, assembly operations, and prototype development activities. Visits to production areas may require the use of personal protective equipment (PPE), including safety glasses, hearing protection, or other equipment as required.
