What does a senior machine learning engineer do?

A Senior Machine Learning Engineer designs, develops, and implements machine learning models to solve complex problems. They are responsible for selecting appropriate algorithms, preprocessing data, and optimizing model performance. Additionally, they collaborate with data scientists, software engineers, and product teams to integrate machine learning solutions into production systems. Senior engineers also mentor junior team members and contribute to setting technical direction for machine learning projects.

What are some common challenges senior machine learning engineers face when deploying models to production, and how can they be addressed?

Senior Machine Learning Engineers often encounter challenges related to model scalability, maintaining performance in real-world scenarios, and ensuring reliable integration with existing systems. Addressing these challenges typically involves thorough testing, implementing robust monitoring for model drift, and collaborating closely with DevOps and software engineering teams to streamline deployment pipelines. Staying updated on best practices in MLOps and adopting tools for automated deployment and monitoring can greatly improve the reliability and efficiency of production models.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a senior machine learning engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Senior Machine Learning Engineer, you need advanced knowledge of machine learning algorithms, statistical modeling, and programming languages like Python or Java, typically supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Experience with frameworks and tools such as TensorFlow, PyTorch, scikit-learn, and cloud platforms, as well as familiarity with version control and CI/CD systems, is essential. Strong problem-solving, communication, and leadership skills help you collaborate effectively and mentor junior team members. These capabilities are crucial for designing scalable ML solutions and driving impactful results within complex, dynamic projects.

What is the difference between Senior Machine Learning Engineer vs Data Scientist?

  • Monday - Friday: 40 hours per week, regular hours (e.g., 9 AM to 6 PM).

  • Periodic flexibility is required to cover first and second shift or provide off-hours support to maintain continuous operations.

Core Responsibilities

  • Training Design & Delivery

    • Design, maintain, and continuously improve the ADOPS Pilot Onboarding and Levelling Process. Training includes hardware, software, and process content.

    • Lead and administer interactive, instructor-led training for ADOPS Robot Pilots. Occasionally the Technical Trainer will provide training to other parties including partner organizations and external product operators.

    • Deliver training on commercially available BD product-lines, software, APIs, and solution infrastructures.

    • Coach and assess ADOPS Robot Pilots, providing feedback on best practices to improve techniques.

    • Perform periodic pilot skills assessments to determine systemic gaps or regressions, collect feedback to track knowledge retention, and inform continuous improvement efforts for all training programs.

  • Documentation & Process Management

    • Act as a Data Ops process specialist, owning the document change control process for all Data Operations documentation.

    • Develop and maintain high-standard technical training content, including task playbooks, Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), presentations, and hands-on exercises.

    • Codify best techniques and practices from veteran pilots and engineers, translating them into required documentation and training materials.

    • Facilitate clear communication channels between Data Ops, Engineering, CL&D, and other partner teams to align on documentation, project status, and operational needs.

Required Skills & Experience

  • Bachelor's degree preferred, or equivalent professional experience in formalized instructional systems, curriculum management, or technical training leadership (including military equivalents). High School diploma or GED required.

  • Proven experience as a technical trainer, documentation specialist, or teacher, with demonstrated success communicating complex technical subject matter to both technical and non-technical audiences.

  • Experience prompting generative AI to create and optimize polished documents from source content

  • Demonstrated ability to curate and develop curriculum for supporting Instructor-Led Training programs.

  • Self-directed with proven experience managing small projects or operations in a fast-paced R&D, lab, or technology-focused environment.

  • Strong computer proficiency; familiarity with robotics concepts, VR systems, or machine learning data pipelines is highly desirable.

  • Comfortable wearing and operating VR headsets, motion capture suits, and handheld VR controllers for extended sessions.

    • Note: VR use can be physically demanding and may cause discomfort or motion sickness for some individuals.

  • Practical hands-on experience with mechanical or electrical systems, enterprise network environments, or familiarity with Linux command line interface/Python is a plus.

Key Attributes

  • Exceptional organizational skills, clear attention to detail, and the ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with confidence engaging with customers, stakeholders, and team members in a collaborative setting.

  • Proactive, self-directed problem-solver who can investigate issues and consult documentation before escalating.

  • Ability to thrive in ambiguous, dynamic, and rapidly evolving technical environments.

  • Reliable, punctual, and committed to structured process and accurate documentation.
