Job description

Senior Naval Science Instructor - Job Description
Position Purpose 


Under the general supervision of the Principal, to develop students' skills and competence in the areas of citizenship and leadership development as well as our maritime heritage, the significance of sea power, and naval topics such as the fundamentals of naval operations, seamanship, navigation and meteorology. Classroom instruction is augmented throughout the year by extra-curricular activities of community service, academic, athletic, drill and orienteering competitions, field meets, flights, visits to naval or other activities, marksmanship sports training, and physical fitness training. 
Essential Functions 
  • Teaches knowledge and skills in the Naval Science pathway within the Government and Public Administration Cluster, in accordance with Lee County School System (LCSS) curriculum standards.
  • Promotes critical and creative thinking and analysis in all related subject areas.
  • Promotes a classroom environment that is safe and conducive to individualized and small group instruction, and student learning. 
  • Develops lesson plans and instructional materials, and translates lesson plans into learning experiences to develop pertinent sequential assignments, challenge students, and best utilize the available time for instruction.
  • Coordinate extra-curricular activities of community service, academic, athletic, drill and orienteering competitions, field meets, flights, visits to naval or other activities, marksmanship sports training, and physical fitness training. 
  • Instructs students in the proper wear of the Navy uniforms and accountability and care of program equipment. 
  • Conducts ongoing assessment of student learning and progress, and modifies instructional methods to fit individual student's needs, including students with special needs; conducts individual and small group instruction as needed.
  • Continues to acquire professional knowledge and learn of current developments in the educational field by attending seminars, workshops or professional meetings, or by conducting research. 
  • Organizes and maintains a system for accurate and complete record-keeping, grading, and reporting for all student activities, achievement and attendance as required by LCSS procedures and applicable laws. 
  • Encourages parental involvement in students' education and ensures effective communication with students and parents. 
  • Ensures that student conduct conforms to the school's standards and school system policies, and establishes and maintains standards of student behavior needed to achieve a functional learning atmosphere in the classroom. 
  • Coordinates with other professional staff members, especially within subject level, and participates in faculty meetings and committees. 
  • Selects and requisitions appropriate resources, maintains inventory records, and ensures equipment is in good working order. 
Additional Duties 
Performs other related tasks as assigned by the Principal and other central office administrators as designated by the Superintendent.

Equipment 
Uses standard office equipment such as personal computers, printer, copy and fax machines, and telephone. Additionally, uses equipment specific to the implementation of CTAE program goals and standards, especially equipment pertaining to the Naval Science curriculum.

Travels to school system buildings, local and regional professional meetings and curriculum related field trips and competitions as required. 
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities 
  • Knowledge of current teaching methods and educational pedagogy, as well as differentiated instruction based upon student learning styles. 
  • Knowledge of data information systems, data analysis and the formulation of action plans. 
  • Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws regarding education and students. 
  • Ability to use computer network system and software applications as needed. 
  • Ability to organize and coordinate work. 
  • Ability to communicate effectively with students and parents. 
  • Ability to engage in self-evaluation with regard to performance and professional growth. 
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others contacted in the course of work. 
  
Physical and Mental Demands, Work Hazards 
Works in standard office and school building environments. Additionally work in various off campus environments associated with the Naval Science Curriculum.
Qualifications Profile 
Certification/License: Current NJROTC Certification as a Naval Science Instructor. 
Education: Bachelor's degree from accredited college or university recognized by the U.S. Department of Education
Experience: Retired Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard officers.
