What is a senior Looker developer?

A Senior Looker Developer is a data professional responsible for designing, building, and optimizing business intelligence solutions using Looker, a data analytics and visualization platform. They create data models, develop dashboards, and ensure that data is accessible and accurate for business users. Senior Looker Developers often collaborate with data engineers, analysts, and business stakeholders to translate business requirements into actionable insights. Their expertise includes LookML (Looker's modeling language), SQL, and best practices for data visualization and reporting. They also mentor junior developers and help drive the adoption of data-driven decision-making within organizations.

What are some common challenges faced by senior Looker developers when working on large-scale BI projects?

Senior Looker Developers often encounter challenges such as optimizing complex data models for performance, managing version control in Looker projects, and ensuring data consistency across multiple sources. Staying current with Looker updates and best practices is essential to deliver scalable, maintainable solutions that meet evolving organizational needs.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a senior Looker developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Senior Looker Developer, you need advanced experience in data modeling, SQL, and business intelligence concepts, typically supported by a bachelor’s degree in computer science or a related field. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving, and clear communication skills help you understand business requirements and deliver actionable insights. These skills ensure you can build scalable, efficient data solutions that drive informed decision-making across the organization.

Since our seed round in 2024, we've achieved 23x revenue growth and scaled to multi-billion-dollar annual transaction volume. In response to this growth, Coinflow announced a $25M Series A in October 2025-led by Pantera Capital, CMT Digital, Coinbase Ventures, Jump Crypto, and Reciprocal Ventures-accelerating our mission to power the world's fastest-moving businesses with innovative, reliable global payments.

The Role
As a Senior Merchant Underwriter, you will perform critical analyses on all merchant applications. This includes reviews of licenses, legal opinions, transaction activity, and credit risk. You will hold independent decision making authority for standard merchant applications and serve as a lead advisor for high-risk sectors (e.g., Crypto, Real Money Gaming, Remittance); for these complex reviews, you will determine the optimal underwriting posture and present formal approval, approval with mitigation, or decline recommendations to risk & executive leadership.
What You'll Do

This includes credit reviews to ensure financial stability and the ability to cover potential chargeback liabilities.
  • Backbook & Portfolio Reviews: Complete refresher reviews of the existing merchant portfolio, such as reviewing updated licenses, legal opinions, or Financial Statements to ensure that merchants are still operating compliantly and manage any changes to their risk profile.
  • Alert Investigation: Perform investigations on Chargeback Spikes, ACH Returns, or other indicators of changes to a merchants risk profile.
  • Process & Efficiency Projects: Drive process improvement or tooling projects to improve efficiency and scale our Underwriting program.
  • Regulatory & Scheme Adaptation: Lead initiatives to update internal processes and policies in response to emerging card partner/scheme requirements, laws, or new regional expansions.
  • Risk Mitigation: Determine actionable conditions for approval, such as implementing reserves, transaction limits, or enhanced monitoring.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally: Partner with Compliance, Product, Engineering, and Operations to help build scalable Underwriting solutions.

Required Qualifications
  • 4+ years in fintech, payments, banking, or financial services Underwriting.
  • Understanding of payment processing, merchant acquiring, and transaction risk.
  • Familiarity with evaluating high regulatory risk business models, such as business related to crypto, remittance, real money gaming, and prediction markets.
  • Proven track record meeting SLAs, and performance expectations
  • Strong analytical skills with ability to work with data and make evidence-based decisions.
  • Excellent communication skills and comfort operating in ambiguous, fast-paced environments.
  • Proficiency in spreadsheet software (Excel/Google Sheets) for data modeling, trend analysis, and synthesis of merchant processing data.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience working transaction monitoring systems and case management platforms.
  • SQL and business intelligence tools (e.g., Tableau, Looker).
  • Background in high-growth payment companies.
  • Interest in cryptocurrency and/or blockchain analytics expertise (Chainalysis, Merkle, Elliptic, TRM Labs).
  • Bachelor's degree
