Our seasoned leadership team brings together decades of experience, equipping data center providers worldwide with robust, reliable solutions that keep pace with the evolving digital landscape.
As demand for high-performance infrastructure accelerates - fueled by AI and the expanding digital landscape - SMC continues to lead through technical rigor and operational excellence. We're seeking leaders who think beyond projects to improve the way we deliver them: individuals who elevate people, process, and performance across the firm.
SMC is actively looking for a Senior Mechanical Engineer to direct and execute mechanical design for mission critical projects. This candidate shall be capable of executing mechanical design projects independently, beginning with driving concept level discussions and proceeding through generation of design plans and specifications for permitting and construction. The mechanical design scope will be a part of a broader project and therefore this candidate will be highly capable of interfacing with design leads within SMC (electrical, telecommunications, fire protection, plumbing) as well as externally including architectural, civil, structural, etc.
The ideal candidate will additionally be involved in growing the mechanical expertise within the company, through internal training; development and implementation of design standards; oversight and execution of quality control practices.
RESPONSIBILITIES
This candidate will have the opportunity to direct and execute the mechanical design while working and coordinating with clients and design leads from all disciplines. This candidate shall have the ability to communicate effectively with co-workers and with clients while being able to meet scheduled project deadlines.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
  • Utilize Autodesk Revit to produce detailed design documents.
  • Perform and review airside and hydronic calculations for multiple mechanical systems.
  • Produce and understand hydronic & airflow flow diagrams.
  • Select and specify HVAC equipment.
  • Understand and be capable of creating detailed sequences of operations (SOO) for the mechanical systems they design.
  • Understand and be capable of specifying mechanical controls systems.
  • Meet project deadlines, including working necessary hours to complete major deliverables.
  • Understand local and national construction codes and project specifications
  • Have experience with the use of Microsoft tools such as Word, Power Point, Excel, and Teams.
  • Have the ability to travel when required to project sites (approximately 10-20% travel).
  • Have the ability to clearly communicate with others in both written and spoken forms.
  • Lead other engineers, designers, and modelers, and coordinate the tasks of multiple teams to execute project delivery of several projects simultaneously.
  • Mentor and train other engineers, designers and modelers to develop mechanical design knowledge base.
  • Be able to work independently while coordinating with senior personnel and other disciplines.
  • Maintain a strong working knowledge of electrical systems in the context of coordinating mechanical design requirements.
  • Maintain excellent organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously

QUALIFICATIONS
  • 4-year degree in mechanical engineering or architectural engineering with a mechanical focus. 2-year degrees and MET degrees with work experience will be considered.
  • Minimum 8 years of experience in HVAC design, particularly using Autodesk Revit.
  • Experience in electrical design for larger industrial and commercial buildings is preferred, with experience in mission critical design a strong plus.
  • Experience developing detailed mechanical calculations and use of calculation software is required.
  • Experience working across the entire construction process, from schematic design through construction administration, including review of submittals and shop drawings, and field work such as existing condition surveys, site observations, and punch lists.
  • Experience leading mechanical design teams and interfacing with clients is strongly preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of controls and monitoring systems for mechanical and electrical systems is a plus.
  • Experience using construction management tools such as Procore and Autodesk Construction Cloud.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) License preferred; however unlicensed candidates with appropriate on-the-job experience are welcome to apply.

LOCATION
This position will begin as remote, with plans to transition to a hybrid role as we continue to grow. We anticipate establishing offices in both the Austin and Dallas-Fort Worth metro areas in the near future, at which point it will become a hybrid role.
