Senior Labview Developer information

What is the difference between Senior Labview Developer vs Test Engineer?

AspectSenior Labview DeveloperTest Engineer
Required credentialsBachelor's in Engineering, certifications in LabVIEWBachelor's in Engineering, certifications in testing or quality assurance
Work environmentDesigning and developing LabVIEW applications, embedded systemsTesting hardware/software, developing test plans, troubleshooting
Industry usageAutomation, measurement, control systemsManufacturing, electronics, aerospace

While both roles often require engineering backgrounds and technical certifications, Senior Labview Developers focus on creating and maintaining LabVIEW-based systems, whereas Test Engineers concentrate on testing and quality assurance processes. The roles may overlap in industries like aerospace and automation, but their core responsibilities differ significantly.

How does a Senior LabVIEW Developer typically collaborate with cross-functional engineering teams?

Senior LabVIEW Developers frequently work alongside hardware, test, and firmware engineers to design, implement, and refine automated test solutions. They are often responsible for translating complex test requirements into robust LabVIEW code, ensuring seamless data acquisition and integration within multi-disciplinary projects. Effective communication and documentation are key, as Senior Developers must often guide junior team members, participate in code reviews, and contribute to system architecture discussions. This collaborative environment fosters both technical growth and strong teamwork skills.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Senior LabVIEW Developer, and why are they important?

A Senior LabVIEW Developer should have advanced proficiency in LabVIEW programming, strong knowledge of test and measurement systems, and a relevant engineering or computer science degree. Familiarity with National Instruments hardware, certification such as Certified LabVIEW Developer (CLD) or Architect (CLA), and experience with version control systems are typically required. Excellent problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help distinguish top performers in this role. These competencies ensure efficient development of robust automated test solutions, seamless integration with hardware, and clear collaboration with multidisciplinary teams.

What are Senior LabVIEW Developers?

Senior LabVIEW Developers are experienced software engineers who specialize in using the LabVIEW graphical programming environment to design, develop, and maintain automated test, measurement, and control systems. They often lead projects, mentor junior developers, and ensure solutions meet technical and business requirements. Their expertise includes advanced LabVIEW architectures, hardware integration, and often certification such as NI Certified LabVIEW Developer (CLD) or Architect (CLA). Senior LabVIEW Developers are commonly found in industries like electronics, manufacturing, and research, where precise data acquisition and automation are critical.

Job description

Job Overview

Provide technical leadership for high-voltage and high-power laboratory testing services team. This role works closely with highvoltage, highpower, mechanical, and environmental laboratory testing services supporting Hubbell business units and thirdparty customers. Own endtoend HV and pulsedpower test programs-from requirements definition and test plan development through execution, data analysis, and final reporting-while ensuring safe operations, compliance with relevant IEC/IEEE/ANSI standards, and continual improvement of laboratory capability. Typical products include electrical utility distribution and transmission components.

#LI-SL1

A Day In The Life
  • Serve as the technical lead for testing in the High Voltage and Pulsed Power Laboratory, partnering with R&D to define requirements, develop test programs, set schedules/priorities, oversee execution, and deliver clear, defensible test reports.
  • Act as the laboratory subjectmatter expert for highvoltage lightning and surge arrester testing (IEC 600994, IEEE C62.11) and highvoltage insulator testing (e.g., IEC 600601, ANSI C29.1), interpreting requirements and translating standards into robust test methods and acceptance criteria.
  • Lead collaboration with the Hubbell Simulation Engineering Team to correlate models to physical test results, define validation plans, and drive improvements that reduce development cycle time and test iteration while maintaining technical rigor.
  • Own the technical roadmap for new and enhanced test capabilities to meet evolving market requirements, industry standards, and customer needs; develop business cases and inputs to longrange lab infrastructure and investment planning.
  • Define system requirements and serve as design authority for new HV test systems (AC, DC, impulse, switching surge, dielectric/endurance, and specialized setups), including specification, risk assessment, validation, commissioning, and operator readiness.
  • Lead and sustain laboratory accreditation to ISO/IEC 17025, including ownership of assigned quality system elements, audit readiness, internal/external audits, proficiency testing, and creation/maintenance of controlled procedures and technical records.
  • Mentor and develop laboratory engineers and technicians through technical coaching, review/approval of work products, and establishment of best practices in test method development, data integrity, and safe execution.
  • Lead investigations for test or equipment nonconformances, including root cause analysis, risk assessment, corrective/preventive actions (CAPA), and effectiveness verification.
  • Develop and maintain 1/3/5year plans for critical equipment maintenance, upgrades, and replacement; partner with the Laboratory Manager to scope, justify, and execute capital equipment, controls, and automation projects.
  • Ensure technical quality and integrity of test data and deliverables by reviewing test setup and results for compliance to plans/standards, approving reports for release, and providing handson technical oversight during complex or highrisk testing.
  • Perform other responsibilities as required
What will help you thrive in this role?

Required:

  • Bachelor's degree in an Engineering discipline or related field (e.g., Electrical, Mechanical, Aerospace, Industrial, Computer, Nuclear) or Physics.
  • Minimum 5 years' experience in electrical equipment manufacturing, electrical utility experience, or test laboratory operations.
  • Previous experience with product testing, equipment design and/or manufacturing, electrical utility operations, electrical research, power generation, standards engineering, reliability engineering, and/or quality control/assurance.
  • Experience with data collection and analysis tools (e.g. Oscilloscopes, LabVIEW, PSpice, etc), test equipment, gages, and/or quality inspection tools and techniques.
  • Familiarity with industry standards (e.g. ISO, IEC, IEEE, ANSI, ASTM, etc).
  • Ability to communicate complex technical topics clearly in written reports and in presentations to crossfunctional and customer audiences (including virtual/teleconferencing formats).
  • Must be a self starter with strong drive, initiative, and ability to work with limited management input.
  • Ability to travel up to 10% of the time, domestic and international.

Preferred (not required):

  • Master's degree in Electrical Engineering or related discipline.
  • Proficiency with Autodesk products (or equivalent CAD tools) and the ability to review/interpret mechanical and electrical designs for test system integration.
  • Proficiency in one or more modern programming/scripting languages (e.g., Python, MATLAB, VB, C) and/or controls/automation (e.g., ladder logic) for test automation and data processing.
