What is a senior internal controls professional?

Senior Internal Controls professionals are responsible for designing, implementing, and monitoring an organization's internal control systems to ensure compliance with regulations and prevent fraud or financial misstatements. They often lead audits, evaluate risk management processes, and collaborate with different departments to maintain effective internal controls. These roles typically require strong analytical skills, a deep understanding of accounting principles, and experience with compliance frameworks such as SOX (Sarbanes-Oxley Act). Senior Internal Controls specialists play a key role in safeguarding a company’s assets and maintaining the integrity of its financial reporting.

What are the main challenges faced by senior internal controls professionals when implementing new compliance frameworks across an organization?

Senior Internal Controls professionals often encounter challenges such as resistance to change from various departments, aligning existing processes with new regulatory requirements, and ensuring consistent communication across teams. They must balance the need for rigorous compliance with practical business operations, which often involves extensive collaboration with finance, audit, IT, and operational staff. Addressing these challenges requires strong project management skills, stakeholder engagement, and a clear understanding of both the regulatory environment and the organization's unique risk landscape.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a senior internal controls professional?

To thrive as a Senior Internal Controls professional, you need a solid background in accounting, auditing, and risk management, often supported by a bachelor's degree in accounting or finance and relevant certifications like CPA or CIA. Familiarity with internal control frameworks (such as COSO), ERP systems (like SAP or Oracle), and audit software is typically required. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help you identify control gaps and collaborate with stakeholders. These skills are essential to ensure organizational compliance, mitigate risks, and maintain reliable financial reporting.

Service Estimator I - Controls
Position Overview
As a Service Estimator I - Controls, you will prepare accurate and competitive cost estimates for building automation, DDC controls, HVAC controls, and related service, repair, retrofit, and maintenance projects. With guidance and mentorship from senior estimators, you will develop estimates, review project documentation, coordinate with internal teams and vendors, and support the creation of professional proposals. This role is suited for someone with foundational knowledge of controls systems who is ready to take ownership of estimate development and grow into a more senior estimating role within our controls service business.
Duties and Responsibilities
  • Prepare complete cost estimates for controls service, repair, retrofit, and maintenance projects, including labor, materials, subcontractors, and equipment.
  • Review project specifications, drawings, scope of work, and site information to perform accurate quantity takeoffs and develop pricing.
  • Solicit and evaluate vendor and subcontractor quotes for controls components, programming, and integration work.
  • Assemble clear, professional proposals and supporting documentation while ensuring compliance with company standards and customer requirements.
  • Collaborate with service technicians, project managers, sales teams, and customers to clarify scope and gather necessary details for accurate estimates.
  • Participate in job walks and site assessments to support scoping and pricing.
  • Maintain organized records of estimates, proposals, and historical data for reference and continuous improvement.
  • Actively learn advanced controls systems, estimating best practices, and company processes through training and mentorship.
  • Support senior estimators on larger or more complex opportunities as needed.

Supervisory Responsibilities None.
Requirements/Qualifications
  • Experience: 1-4 years of experience in controls estimating, building automation, DDC/HVAC controls service, or related technical/estimating roles.
  • Education: Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Construction Management, Business, or a related technical field preferred (equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered).
  • Certifications/Licenses: Valid driver's license and clean driving record required. Basic controls certifications (e.g., Niagara, Tridium, or manufacturer-specific) are a plus.
  • Physical Demands: Primarily office-based with occasional job site visits; ability to walk construction sites, climb ladders occasionally, and lift light materials (up to 25 lbs).
  • Work Environment/Safety: Professional office environment with periodic field exposure. Must maintain strong safety awareness on job sites. This is not a safety-sensitive position.

Required Skills
  • Ability to prepare accurate estimates and takeoffs for controls projects.
  • Solid understanding of commercial building automation, DDC controls, HVAC controls, or related systems.
  • Strong proficiency in Microsoft Excel and ability to learn estimating software.
  • Excellent attention to detail, organizational skills, and analytical thinking.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills for proposal development and internal coordination.
  • Customer-service mindset and ability to collaborate effectively with technicians, sales, and project teams.
