What are some common challenges a Senior Interconnection Engineer faces during utility-scale renewable energy projects?

Senior Interconnection Engineers often encounter challenges related to coordinating with multiple stakeholders, including utilities, regulatory bodies, and project developers. Navigating complex grid interconnection standards, ensuring compliance with evolving technical requirements, and managing tight project timelines are frequent hurdles. Additionally, balancing technical feasibility with cost-effectiveness while performing grid impact studies and securing interconnection agreements requires strong problem-solving and communication skills. Effective collaboration with multidisciplinary teams is essential to successfully move projects forward.

What is the difference between Senior Interconnection Engineer vs Interconnection Engineer?

AspectSenior Interconnection EngineerInterconnection Engineer
QualificationsBachelor's degree in engineering, often with 3+ years experienceBachelor's degree in engineering, typically with 1-3 years experience
ResponsibilitiesLead complex interconnection projects, mentor junior staff, oversee complianceAssist with interconnection studies, support project execution, perform technical analysis
Work EnvironmentUtility companies, renewable energy firms, consulting firmsUtility companies, renewable energy developers, engineering firms

In summary, a Senior Interconnection Engineer typically has more experience, leadership responsibilities, and oversees complex projects, whereas an Interconnection Engineer supports project execution and performs technical tasks. Both roles are essential in the energy industry but differ in scope and seniority.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Senior Interconnection Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Senior Interconnection Engineer, you need a solid background in electrical engineering, power systems, and interconnection standards, typically supported by a relevant degree and several years of industry experience. Familiarity with power flow modeling software (such as PSS/E or PowerWorld), grid codes, and regulatory requirements, as well as certifications like PE (Professional Engineer), are commonly required. Outstanding project management, problem-solving, and effective communication skills help you navigate complex stakeholder relationships and technical challenges. These skills ensure safe, timely, and regulatory-compliant integration of energy projects into power grids, supporting grid reliability and project success.

What are Senior Interconnection Engineers?

Senior Interconnection Engineers are experienced professionals who design, evaluate, and manage the electrical interconnection of large-scale energy projects—such as solar, wind, or battery storage systems—to the utility grid. They are responsible for ensuring that projects meet all technical, regulatory, and safety requirements for grid connection. Their role involves coordinating with utilities, conducting power system studies, overseeing the application process, and resolving technical challenges that arise during interconnection. Senior Interconnection Engineers often serve as technical leads, mentoring junior engineers and interfacing with project stakeholders to ensure successful project delivery.

Job description

Sr. Engineer (DER Interconnection) Electric UtilitiesAbout PowerRise

PowerRise is a premier provider of engineering, architecture, and project/construction management services for electric and gas utility clients. We specialize in delivering reliable, resilient, and innovative solutions that drive success for capital projects. Our leadership team brings decades of experience in the energy sector, ensuring expert execution and strategic management across all project phases. At PowerRise, we champion safety, innovation, diversity, and inclusion, ensuring every project contributes to a more equitable and sustainable energy future.

Position Summary

PowerRise is seeking a highly experienced Senior Distribution Engineer specializing in Renewable Interconnection to act as an Owner’s Engineer for our major utility client. In this critical leadership role, you will serve as the premier technical expert responsible for complex interconnection studies, Queue Analysis, and QA/QC oversight of Engineer of Choice (EOC) deliverables. You will develop technical standards, mentor junior engineering staff, and ensure the safe, compliant integration of Distributed Energy Resources (DER) into the grid.

Key Responsibilities
  • Technical Reviews & Loadflow Analysis: Perform advanced interconnection studies and loadflow analyses for DER interconnections to determine system impacts (voltage regulation, protection coordination, loading).
  • Queue Analysis & Grid Upgrades: Apply technical interconnection requirements to DER applications to accurately determine queue positions and assign necessary grid upgrades.
  • Project Scoping & Estimating: Develop detailed engineering scopes of work for distribution DER upgrade projects and produce comprehensive, accurate cost estimates.
  • QA/QC Oversight: Serve as the Owner's Engineer by performing rigorous QA/QC reviews of EOC (Engineer of Choice) work, including deep technical reviews and design approvals.
  • Process Documentation & Mentorship: Lead the creation of reference materials, training documentation, and process flow diagrams for assigned activities. Provide guidance and mentorship to junior engineering staff supporting these initiatives.
  • Qualifications
  • Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering (BSEE) from an accredited university.
  • 10 plus years of progressive experience performing interconnection analyses, loadflow analyses, and electric utility distribution design.
  • Strong proficiency with power flow analysis software (e.g., CYME, Synergi, Milsoft).
  • Deep technical understanding of Distributed Energy Resources (DER) and renewable interconnection standards (e.g., IEEE 1547, NESC).
  • Proven experience developing detailed construction scopes and cost estimates for utility distribution projects.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to coordinate complex projects and oversee thirdparty engineering contractors (EOCs).
  • Preferred Qualifications
  • Licensed Professional Engineer (PE).
  • Direct experience managing the utility interconnection queue.
  • Why Join PowerRise?
  • Competitive salary and comprehensive benefits package.
  • Direct experience managing the utility interconnection queue.
  • To Apply

Interested candidates are invited to submit their resume and a cover letter detailing their relevant electric utility construction management experience to careers@thepowerrise.com. Please include "DER Interconnection Engineer" in the subject line.
