Senior Interconnection Engineer information

What is a senior interconnection engineer?

Senior Interconnection Engineers are experienced professionals who design, evaluate, and manage the electrical interconnection of large-scale energy projects—such as solar, wind, or battery storage systems—to the utility grid. They are responsible for ensuring that projects meet all technical, regulatory, and safety requirements for grid connection. Their role involves coordinating with utilities, conducting power system studies, overseeing the application process, and resolving technical challenges that arise during interconnection. Senior Interconnection Engineers often serve as technical leads, mentoring junior engineers and interfacing with project stakeholders to ensure successful project delivery.

What are some common challenges a senior interconnection engineer faces during utility-scale renewable energy projects?

Senior Interconnection Engineers often encounter challenges related to coordinating with multiple stakeholders, including utilities, regulatory bodies, and project developers. Navigating complex grid interconnection standards, ensuring compliance with evolving technical requirements, and managing tight project timelines are frequent hurdles. Additionally, balancing technical feasibility with cost-effectiveness while performing grid impact studies and securing interconnection agreements requires strong problem-solving and communication skills. Effective collaboration with multidisciplinary teams is essential to successfully move projects forward.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a senior interconnection engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Senior Interconnection Engineer, you need a solid background in electrical engineering, power systems, and interconnection standards, typically supported by a relevant degree and several years of industry experience. Familiarity with power flow modeling software (such as PSS/E or PowerWorld), grid codes, and regulatory requirements, as well as certifications like PE (Professional Engineer), are commonly required. Outstanding project management, problem-solving, and effective communication skills help you navigate complex stakeholder relationships and technical challenges. These skills ensure safe, timely, and regulatory-compliant integration of energy projects into power grids, supporting grid reliability and project success.

What is the difference between Senior Interconnection Engineer vs Interconnection Engineer?

AspectSenior Interconnection EngineerInterconnection Engineer
QualificationsBachelor's degree in engineering, often with 3+ years experienceBachelor's degree in engineering, typically with 1-3 years experience
ResponsibilitiesLead complex interconnection projects, mentor junior staff, oversee complianceAssist with interconnection studies, support project execution, perform technical analysis
Work EnvironmentUtility companies, renewable energy firms, consulting firmsUtility companies, renewable energy developers, engineering firms

In summary, a Senior Interconnection Engineer typically has more experience, leadership responsibilities, and oversees complex projects, whereas an Interconnection Engineer supports project execution and performs technical tasks. Both roles are essential in the energy industry but differ in scope and seniority.

Hut 8 is on a mission to build and operate some of the world's largest data centers for next-generation computing workloads, including AI, Colocation, Cloud, and Bitcoin Mining. We are proud to offer interesting and challenging opportunities for individuals who want to build teams, solve problems, and make an impact from day one. If you're an ambitious individual looking for a career that is as rewarding as it is challenging, you've come to the right place.
About the Role
We are seeking a motivated Senior Associate, Transmission & Interconnection to support Hut 8's interconnection and transmission planning efforts across the United States. As Hut 8 scales its energy infrastructure platform-powering next-generation data centers, AI workloads, and Bitcoin mining operations-securing reliable, cost-effective grid access is mission-critical.
In this role, you will support the interconnection queue process for large load and co-located generation assets, working closely with utilities and grid operators to prepare study materials, maintain power system models, and translate technical findings for internal and external stakeholders. You will partner cross-functionally with the broader Transmission & Interconnection team to help identify, track, and mitigate interconnection timelines, cost exposures, and technical requirements
Key Responsibilities
Utility Interface
  • Prepare materials for utility and grid operator submittals
  • Track study milestones and support related negotiation processes
  • Maintain internal records to support study oversight

Power System Modeling & Simulation
  • Ensure model currency across regional grid operator systems
  • Lead power flow studies to support load capacity screening, network upgrade cost estimation, and system reliability analysis
  • Direct system stability and protection-related studies as needed
  • Prepare and review clear, decision-ready technical reports and analysis
  • Translate technical findings for engineering, business, and executive audiences
  • Drive coordination and alignment across internal teams and stakeholders

Dynamic Model Quality Testing
  • Directs external consultants to build and validate power flow and dynamic models using standard industry software. With eventual internalization, performs required dynamic model quality testing.
  • Own dynamic model validation and benchmarking via model quality testing

Process Improvement
  • Drive adoption of workflow automation and modern software tools to scale study throughput as project volume grows

About You
Required Qualifications
  • BSEE from an ABET-accredited program with a power emphasis
  • 5-8 years of experience in power systems, transmission planning, and interconnection gained as a consultant, ISO/utility engineer, or in an equivalent role
  • Proficient with power system modeling and simulation software such as PSS/E, PSLF, PowerWorld, TARA, or equivalent)
  • Practical experience with direct hands-on or oversight to consultants to validate dynamic model via comparative assessment against PSCAD or EMTP modeling and simulation.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret complex interconnection study results and develop actionable recommendations
  • Skilled in report preparation, data analytics, and cost modeling, with clear written and verbal communication and the ability to translate technical findings for engineering and business audiences alike
  • Proficiency with workflow automation and application program interfaces to scale process development as study volume grows

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience within an ISO/RTO is strongly preferred, followed by consulting firm or utility experience, with exposure to organized markets such as PJM, ERCOT, MISO, SPP, or the Southeast (Georgia Power, Duke, TVA)
  • Direct exposure to large-load or HPC/data center power requirements-including in an academic context-is a strong plus given the unit's focus on speed to power
  • Demonstrated experience mentoring or leading junior engineers on interconnection studies
  • Experience presenting study findings and negotiation strategy directly to senior leadership or executive stakeholders
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license strongly preferred
