Senior Interconnection Engineer information

What is a senior interconnection engineer?

Senior Interconnection Engineers are experienced professionals who design, evaluate, and manage the electrical interconnection of large-scale energy projects—such as solar, wind, or battery storage systems—to the utility grid. They are responsible for ensuring that projects meet all technical, regulatory, and safety requirements for grid connection. Their role involves coordinating with utilities, conducting power system studies, overseeing the application process, and resolving technical challenges that arise during interconnection. Senior Interconnection Engineers often serve as technical leads, mentoring junior engineers and interfacing with project stakeholders to ensure successful project delivery.

What are some common challenges a senior interconnection engineer faces during utility-scale renewable energy projects?

Senior Interconnection Engineers often encounter challenges related to coordinating with multiple stakeholders, including utilities, regulatory bodies, and project developers. Navigating complex grid interconnection standards, ensuring compliance with evolving technical requirements, and managing tight project timelines are frequent hurdles. Additionally, balancing technical feasibility with cost-effectiveness while performing grid impact studies and securing interconnection agreements requires strong problem-solving and communication skills. Effective collaboration with multidisciplinary teams is essential to successfully move projects forward.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a senior interconnection engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Senior Interconnection Engineer, you need a solid background in electrical engineering, power systems, and interconnection standards, typically supported by a relevant degree and several years of industry experience. Familiarity with power flow modeling software (such as PSS/E or PowerWorld), grid codes, and regulatory requirements, as well as certifications like PE (Professional Engineer), are commonly required. Outstanding project management, problem-solving, and effective communication skills help you navigate complex stakeholder relationships and technical challenges. These skills ensure safe, timely, and regulatory-compliant integration of energy projects into power grids, supporting grid reliability and project success.

What is the difference between Senior Interconnection Engineer vs Interconnection Engineer?

AspectSenior Interconnection EngineerInterconnection Engineer
QualificationsBachelor's degree in engineering, often with 3+ years experienceBachelor's degree in engineering, typically with 1-3 years experience
ResponsibilitiesLead complex interconnection projects, mentor junior staff, oversee complianceAssist with interconnection studies, support project execution, perform technical analysis
Work EnvironmentUtility companies, renewable energy firms, consulting firmsUtility companies, renewable energy developers, engineering firms

In summary, a Senior Interconnection Engineer typically has more experience, leadership responsibilities, and oversees complex projects, whereas an Interconnection Engineer supports project execution and performs technical tasks. Both roles are essential in the energy industry but differ in scope and seniority.

Job description

Ziegler Energy Solutions has an opening for a Senior Electrical Power Engineer to lead technical design and system integration across distributed generation and energy infrastructure projects. This position requires deep technical competence in Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), Solar PV, and high-capacity EV charging systems, with an emphasis on practical, field-ready engineering deliverables. This position will serve as the subject matter expert throughout the project lifecycle, supporting sales during early scoping, project managers during execution, and collaborating with electrical contractors during construction and commissioning.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop complete electrical design packages, including single-line diagrams, equipment specifications, load summaries, and integration details for BESS, Solar PV, and EV charging infrastructure
  • Lead technical design of DC Fast Charging (DCFC) sites, including load calculations, transformer and switchgear sizing, site power distribution, and thermal/ventilation considerations
  • Provide technical validation to Sales Engineers on equipment selection, system configuration, and feasibility during pre-construction
  • Support Project Managers and field teams with engineering clarification, RFIs, and real-time design adjustments during installation
  • Conduct or facilitate protection and control studies, ensuring proper device coordination and distribution system reliability
  • Integrate BESS, Solar PV, and EV charging systems into microgrid or hybrid architectures, including inverter-based resource (IBR) configuration and functional sequencing
  • Perform or facilitate engineering studies such as short circuit, arc flash, load flow, grounding, and harmonics
  • Ensure design compliance with NEC, NESC, and IEEE standards and prepare technical inputs for utility interconnection applications
  • Mentor junior engineering staff, lead peer reviews, and uphold engineering quality standards across all deliverables

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from an ABET-accredited institution required
  • 4+ years of relevant experience in LV/MV power distribution, protective relaying, and distributed energy resource integration
  • 4+ years of experience in power and energy systems
  • Active Professional Engineer (PE) license required
  • Proficiency with ETAP, AutoCAD, and/or Revit
  • Strong communication ability to translate complex engineering topics for non-technical stakeholders and field personnel
  • Prior experience managing utility-scale interconnection processes and requirements preferred
  • Knowledge of EV charging standards, load-management strategies, and demand-response programs preferred
  • Strong focus on safety-by-design and system reliability principles
  • Prior experience with HOMER, Energy Toolbase, Helioscope preferred
  • Working knowledge of applicable electrical and energy storage standards, including NFPA (70 (NEC), 70E, 855), UL (9540(A), 1741, 891, 1558, 2202(EV Charging)), and IEEE/ANSI (1547 (Interconnection), C37 (Relaying), C57 (Transformers))
