What is a senior interaction designer?

Senior Interaction Designers are experienced professionals who focus on creating engaging and user-friendly digital experiences. They are responsible for designing the way users interact with products, such as websites, applications, or software, ensuring usability, accessibility, and satisfaction. Senior Interaction Designers typically lead design projects, collaborate with cross-functional teams, and mentor junior designers. They use research, prototyping, and usability testing to refine and validate design solutions. Their work plays a crucial role in shaping intuitive and effective digital products.

How does a senior interaction designer typically collaborate with cross-functional teams during a project?

Senior Interaction Designers work closely with product managers, developers, and visual designers throughout the project lifecycle. They often lead design workshops, translate user research into wireframes and prototypes, and iterate on solutions based on feedback from both users and stakeholders. Effective collaboration involves clear communication, advocating for user-centered design principles, and ensuring that the final product aligns with both business goals and user needs. This role frequently requires balancing multiple viewpoints and facilitating consensus among diverse team members.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a senior interaction designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Senior Interaction Designer, you need expertise in user experience (UX) principles, user interface (UI) design, prototyping, and a relevant degree or equivalent experience. Mastery of design tools like Figma, Sketch, Adobe XD, and familiarity with usability testing platforms are typically required. Strong communication, collaboration, and problem-solving skills help you effectively translate user needs into intuitive digital experiences. These skills ensure the creation of user-centric products that drive engagement, satisfaction, and business success.

You'll be a core member of the design team for Cisco Cloud Control - a high-visibility, next-generation enterprise platform connecting Cisco's security, networking, and AI product lines. It's also the home of AI Canvas, one of Cisco's top priorities.
The team is small, dynamic, and deeply collaborative. Designers here work closely with product managers, engineers, and researchers to deliver platform experiences that feel unified across the Cisco ecosystem, combining systems thinking with strong visual craft and execution.

Your Impact

As a Senior Product Designer, you'll help bring Cisco's platform vision to life through high-quality product design execution. You'll own the refinement, specification, and delivery of experiences, partnering closely with Research, Product, and Engineering to ensure designs are thoughtfully executed and successfully implemented.

What You'll Do

  • Transform conceptual designs into production-ready experiences.

  • Produce detailed interaction designs, specifications, and developer handoff documentation.

  • Design edge cases, empty states, loading states, and error handling.

  • Refine existing platform experiences as requirements evolve.

  • Maintain consistency with established platform principles and design standards.

  • Partner closely with Engineering throughout implementation, answering implementation questions and providing rapid design support during development.

  • Monitor engineering channels, proactively resolve UX issues, and validate implemented experiences against design intent.

  • Produce polished visual design, interaction design, and motion specifications.

  • Contribute to the evolution of shared patterns and reusable assets while helping maintain quality across shipped experiences.

  • Use AI-assisted design and prototyping tools to transform ideas into interactive prototypes, rapidly iterate on concepts, and accelerate discovery, experimentation, and validation of complex platform experiences.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree with 7+ years of related experience, Master's degree with 4+ years of related experience, or PhD with 1+ year of related experience.

  • Prior experience in interaction design, information architecture, and visual design for complex enterprise environments.

  • Experience in visual design, including layout systems, typography, hierarchy, color, grid usage, and graphic composition.

  • Experience collaborating cross-functionally with Product, Engineering, and Research teams from concept through delivery.

  • Experience using AI-assisted design and/or prototyping tools as part of the product design workflow.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Outstanding craft in visual and interaction design, with strong prototyping skills.

  • Advanced proficiency with AI-assisted design and prototyping workflows, including using emerging AI tools to accelerate ideation, experimentation, iteration, and validation.

  • Diligent and highly organized, with the ability to work effectively in fast paced delivery environments.

  • Excellent collaborator with engineers and cross-functional partners.

  • Ability to execute within an established vision while identifying practical improvements.

  • Enjoys solving implementation details and polishing experiences through delivery.
