What is a senior instrumentation engineer?

Senior Instrumentation Engineers are experienced professionals responsible for designing, developing, installing, managing, and maintaining equipment used to monitor and control engineering systems, machinery, and processes. They play a key role in ensuring that instruments and control systems operate efficiently, reliably, and safely. Their work spans various industries such as oil and gas, manufacturing, chemical processing, and energy production. Senior Instrumentation Engineers often lead teams, oversee project implementation, and troubleshoot complex issues related to instrumentation and automation systems.

How does a senior instrumentation engineer typically collaborate with other engineering disciplines on large-scale projects?

A Senior Instrumentation Engineer often works closely with process, electrical, and mechanical engineers to ensure that instrumentation systems align with overall plant design and operational requirements. Collaboration involves participating in multidisciplinary meetings, reviewing P&IDs, coordinating interface points, and integrating control systems. Effective communication and teamwork are crucial, as instrumentation decisions can impact safety, efficiency, and maintenance across the project. This collaborative environment supports seamless project execution and fosters professional growth through knowledge sharing.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a senior instrumentation engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Senior Instrumentation Engineer, you need a solid background in instrumentation engineering, process control, and project management, usually supported by a relevant engineering degree and significant field experience. Familiarity with industry-standard tools such as PLC/DCS systems, AutoCAD, and certifications like ISA CAP or PE are highly valued. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication skills help you lead teams and collaborate across disciplines. These competencies are essential for ensuring reliable system design, efficient project execution, and adherence to safety and industry standards.

What is the difference between Senior Instrumentation Engineer vs Instrumentation Technician?

AspectSenior Instrumentation EngineerInstrumentation Technician
QualificationsBachelor's degree in Engineering, certifications in instrumentationTechnical diploma or associate degree, on-the-job training
Work EnvironmentDesign, project management, troubleshooting in industrial plantsInstallation, maintenance, calibration in manufacturing or processing facilities
ResponsibilitiesDesigning systems, overseeing projects, troubleshooting complex issuesPerforming routine maintenance, calibrations, and repairs

While both roles involve instrumentation, Senior Instrumentation Engineers focus on design, planning, and complex troubleshooting, whereas Instrumentation Technicians handle hands-on maintenance and calibration tasks. The senior engineer typically requires higher education and oversees projects, while technicians support daily operations through technical skills.

Job description

Description:

Why Gravitate?

At Gravitate, we’re on a mission to put everyday supply and logistics decisions in motion, powered by innovative problem-solving from industry experts.

A lot of companies say it. We mean it: Gravitate is different. Rooted in the spirit of collaboration, we thrive on the smarts of our people and the dynamic we’ve cultivated. Our developers and infrastructure engineers are the driving force behind our product’s success and are very influential in decision-making. We hire creative people and give them the autonomy to do great work.

Tell Me About My Job

If you are considering this role, you are someone who is passionate about developer experience and has a proven track record of building and maintaining the foundational infrastructure, tooling, and workflows that make software teams fast and fearless. You understand that great platform work is invisible — when you do it right, developers don’t notice the platform; they just ship.

As our Senior Platform Engineer, you will design and evolve our Internal Developer Platform (IDP), creating “paved roads” that allow product teams to self-service their infrastructure, deployments, and observability needs without waiting on manual ops work. You will be a core member of our engineering organization, working across cloud infrastructure, CI/CD, security, and reliability to reduce cognitive load on our development teams and increase the velocity at which we deliver value to customers.

We’re strongly against artificial separations of responsibility and throwing work “over the wall.” Instead, we constantly optimize around the highest and best use of our resources, and we expect this role to embody that spirit.

You’re the ideal candidate if…

  • You have 6+ years of platform, infrastructure, or DevOps engineering experience, with a strong focus on enabling development teams rather than just operating systems.
  • You have deep experience with Kubernetes — cluster design, workload management, RBAC, networking, and day-to-day operations.
  • You are proficient with Infrastructure as Code (IaC), particularly Terraform and have opinionated views on how to structure and manage it at scale.
  • You have strong cloud provider knowledge, ideally GCP, with hands-on experience in networking, IAM, compute, storage, and managed services.
  • You have built and maintained CI/CD pipelines using tools like GitHub Actions, ArgoCD, or Flux, and have a strong understanding of GitOps principles.
  • You are comfortable writing code in Python. Adding instrumentation and contributing to our platform in areas in the intersection of cloud infrastructure / observability and our applications.
  • You have experience designing and implementing observability stacks — logging, metrics, alerting, and tracing — and understand how to use them to drive reliability.
  • You communicate clearly with non-platform engineers, translating infrastructure concerns into language product teams can act on.

Duties/Responsibilities

  • Own and evolve our Developer Experience, building self-service capabilities that allow product engineers paved roads to build with quality & security, deploy applications, and configure observability without operational bottlenecks.
  • Design, implement, and maintain scalable cloud infrastructure on GCP using Kubernetes and other managed services, ensuring security, reliability, and cost efficiency.
  • Manage and improve our CI/CD pipelines using GitHub Actions and ArgoCD, driving toward faster, safer, and more consistent software delivery across all teams.
  • Lead our Infrastructure as Code practice using Terraform, setting standards for module design, state management, and change workflows.
  • Drive improvements in our site reliability across our products, driving centralized logging, observability, and enabling teams across the company to better utilize the observability platforms.
  • Enforce and evolve our security posture across cloud environments, including IAM policies, secrets management, network segmentation, and compliance controls.
  • Reduce operational toil by identifying and automating repetitive infrastructure and deployment tasks.
  • Partner with product engineering teams to understand their infrastructure needs and translate them into platform capabilities and standards.
  • Invest in documentation and knowledge-sharing, including runbooks, setup guides, architecture decision records (ADRs), and onboarding materials.

Nice To Have

  • Experience with ArgoCD, Flux, or other GitOps tools for declarative continuous delivery.
  • Familiarity with service mesh technologies such as Istio or Linkerd.
  • Experience using LLM / agentic coding tools such as Claude Code or GitHub Copilot to accelerate infrastructure work.
  • Experience managing MongoDB, Postgres, and SQL Server in a production environment.
  • Experience with secrets management tools such as Vault, Doppler or AWS Secrets Manager.
  • Familiarity with compliance frameworks (SOC 2, ISO 27001) and their infrastructure implications.
  • Exposure to our backend stack (Python, .NET, MongoDB, SQL Server, Kubernetes, Docker).
  • Experience with modern testing approaches for infrastructure, including Terratest or policy-as-code tools like OPA or Conftest.

About the Gravitate Team

To understand who our people are, you should first understand what they’re not: replaceable. Each member of the team is chosen carefully and with intention. We believe that finding the right fit is more important than a laundry list of credentials — and that people are people first, and titles second.

Because we hire the Gravitate way, our team is certainly one of a kind. We’ve brought together incredible talent that regularly collaborates to create clean, fresh solutions. That effort has led to remarkable opportunities, including work with many Fortune 500 clients. We’ve found that the winning combination of exciting achievements, trust in one another, and open communication lays the groundwork for long-lasting, successful careers. That, and the fact that we clap for each other at every opportunity.

Problem solvers, go-getters, and charge-takers — we (really) want to hear from you.
