What is a senior implementation engineer?

Senior Implementation Engineers are experienced professionals responsible for overseeing the deployment and integration of complex software, hardware, or IT systems for clients or within organizations. They work closely with project managers, clients, and technical teams to ensure solutions are delivered on time, meet requirements, and function as intended. Their role often includes designing implementation plans, troubleshooting issues, providing technical support, and training end-users. Senior Implementation Engineers typically bring several years of experience and deep technical expertise, enabling them to guide projects from initial planning to successful completion.

What are some common challenges faced by senior implementation engineers during large-scale software deployments?

Senior Implementation Engineers often encounter challenges such as managing complex integrations with existing client systems, coordinating cross-functional teams to meet tight deadlines, and troubleshooting unexpected technical issues during deployment. Communication is key, as these engineers frequently serve as the primary liaison between clients, internal developers, and project managers. Staying organized and adapting quickly to changing requirements are essential skills for overcoming these hurdles and ensuring successful project delivery.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a senior implementation engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Senior Implementation Engineer, you need advanced technical expertise in systems integration, project management experience, and a strong background in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with enterprise software platforms, APIs, cloud services, and certifications like PMP or relevant vendor credentials are typically required. Excellent problem-solving abilities, communication skills, and the ability to lead cross-functional teams distinguish top performers. These capabilities are crucial for successfully deploying complex solutions, ensuring client satisfaction, and driving project success in dynamic environments.

What is the difference between Senior Implementation Engineer vs Implementation Engineer?

Job description

Purpose

Join our mission to redefine aerospace and automotive manufacturing through advanced Additive Manufacturing. We are seeking a hands-on Manufacturing Equipment Engineer to help transition next-generation Laser Powder Bed Fusion (L-PBF) production equipment from development into high-volume manufacturing.

This role helps ensure our production equipment is stable, reliable, scalable, and capable of delivering world-class safety, quality, delivery, and cost performance. As our manufacturing footprint expands across multiple factories, you will solve equipment problems at the machine level and help transform those solutions into engineering standards deployed across the entire fleet.

Success in this role requires strong troubleshooting skills, independent technical judgment, and the drive to grow into broader fleet-level ownership. You will work alongside senior equipment engineers to stabilize new machines, improve reliability, and build the standards that carry the fleet as it scales.

The Role

As a Manufacturing Equipment Engineer (known internally as Additive Manufacturing Equipment Engineer II), you will take technical responsibility for assigned production equipment after engineering qualification. You will work at the intersection of equipment engineering, manufacturing, quality, reliability, and operations, applying independent judgment to solve complex problems and improving standard work with input from your manager and senior engineers.

You will:

  • Support the transition of newly developed production equipment from qualification into sustained manufacturing.
  • Drive improvements in equipment reliability, throughput, yield, and overall equipment effectiveness (OEE) on assigned machines.
  • Troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, controls, and process-related issues affecting production, adapting established methods to new problems.
  • Apply and improve engineering standards that ensure consistency across production assets.
  • Provide production feedback to design engineering on machine performance and reliability.
  • Support technical investigations and Root Cause Corrective Actions (RCCA) for equipment failures.
  • Contribute to cost reduction through equipment optimization and process improvements.
  • Support capital equipment installation, commissioning, and production readiness activities.
  • Act as a technical resource for operators, technicians, and peers.

Equipment Performance & Machine Ownership

  • Take technical responsibility for assigned production L-PBF equipment following Operational Qualification (OQ).
  • Track performance against established baselines and improve machine capability across safety, quality, delivery, and cost.
  • Execute standardized equipment configurations and flag deviations between machines and factories.
  • Contribute to engineering standards supporting future factory deployments.

Troubleshooting & Reliability Engineering

  • Troubleshoot equipment issues involving mechanical, electrical, controls, software, and process interactions.
  • Perform root cause investigations using structured engineering methodologies.
  • Implement corrective actions that eliminate recurring failures.
  • Improve preventative maintenance procedures based on equipment performance, with manager input.

Process & Manufacturing Optimization

  • Improve L-PBF equipment capability to increase throughput, yield, dimensional accuracy, and repeatability.
  • Implement engineering solutions that increase machine utilization and operational efficiency.
  • Support qualification and validation activities for new equipment, process changes, and manufacturing improvements.

Engineering Collaboration & Equipment Development

  • Provide structured production feedback to equipment design teams on machine performance, serviceability, and manufacturability.
  • Collaborate with controls, software, mechanical, electrical, and systems engineers to resolve technical challenges.
  • Support Design for Manufacturability (DFM) and Design for Reliability (DFR) initiatives.

Fleet Standards & Technical Documentation

  • Develop and improve standard work, maintenance procedures, and calibration documentation with manager input.
  • Support configuration management and engineering change implementation across the production fleet.
  • Document lessons learned so they can be institutionalized into future machine deployments.

Quality & Compliance

  • Support qualification of additive manufacturing equipment and processes to aerospace and automotive quality requirements.
  • Support Quality Engineering during audits, customer reviews, and process validation activities.
  • Analyze manufacturing defects and equipment-related quality issues and implement engineering solutions.
  • Follow AS9100, AMS, PPAP, and internal quality system requirements.

Capital Equipment & Factory Expansion

  • Execute assigned scopes within capital equipment projects supporting factory growth.
  • Support factory acceptance testing (FAT), site acceptance testing (SAT), commissioning, and production ramp activities.
  • Contribute to technical readiness plans ensuring new equipment achieves production targets rapidly.
Basic Qualifications
  • Ability to lawfully access information and technology that is subject to US export controls
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, or related discipline.
  • 4-6 years of experience in manufacturing engineering, equipment engineering, reliability engineering, or advanced production environments.
  • Experience supporting the launch or ramp of production equipment or processes.
  • Strong troubleshooting skills across mechanical, electrical, and/or controls systems.
  • Experience with structured root cause analysis methodologies (e.g., RCCA, 5 Whys, Fishbone).
  • Ability to work cross-functionally with engineering, operations, quality, and maintenance teams.
  • Strong analytical and data-driven decision-making skills.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with Laser Powder Bed Fusion (L-PBF) or other metal additive manufacturing technologies.
  • Experience in aerospace, automotive, semiconductor, or other high-volume precision manufacturing environments.
  • Knowledge of AS9100, AMS, PPAP, APQP, or equivalent quality systems.
  • Exposure to equipment reliability engineering, OEE improvement, or preventative maintenance programs.
  • Experience working with machine sensor data or manufacturing analytics.
  • Experience with controls systems, PLCs, industrial automation, or machine integration.
  • Experience supporting capital equipment installation or commissioning.
