Job description

Job Description:

Company Description

Instron® is a global organization that designs, manufactures, sells and services materials testing systems.  Instron is a clear global leader in materials testing applications and its leadership in the marketplace is continually expanding.  You will find that our established strength, commitment to our core values and team focus provides an engaging work environment and offers exceptional opportunities for personal and career development. This position is based at Instron’s Static Testing equipment division located in Norwood, Massachusetts.

Position Summary

We have a new opportunity for a Senior Digital Image Correlation (DIC) software development engineer to join our Engineering team. In this role you will be working within a collaborative team on the development of next generation non-contacting measurement technologies and processes for video extensometer products. You will lead the design, implementation, and optimization of advanced DIC algorithms and systems and will have deep expertise across 2D and 3D DIC methods, optical and imaging system design, and high‑performance, real‑time software implementation. The successful candidate will serve as both a technical authority and hands‑on contributor, working across algorithm development, computational performance optimization, and integration with imaging hardware. This role plays a critical part in delivering robust, production‑grade DIC solutions used in demanding real‑time and high‑accuracy measurement applications.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, implement, and maintain state‑of‑the‑art 2D and 3D Digital Image Correlation algorithms, including subset‑based and global DIC approaches

  • Develop and refine correlation metrics, interpolation schemes and strain calculation methods.

  • Validate algorithm accuracy and robustness through analytical methods, simulations, and experimental datasets.

  • Collaborate on the design and selection of optical systems, including lenses, cameras, illumination, and stereo configurations for 3D DIC.

  • Contribute to camera calibration, stereo reconstruction, and geometric correction

  • Understand and optimize performance tradeoffs across resolution, frame rate, depth of field, and signal‑to‑noise ratio.

  • Work closely with hardware teams to ensure seamless integration between imaging systems and DIC software.

  • Optimize DIC software for real‑time or near real‑time execution, including low‑latency processing pipelines.

  • Apply performance optimization techniques such as multi‑threading, SIMD/vectorization, GPU acceleration (e.g., CUDA/OpenCL), and memory‑efficient architectures.

  • Profile and benchmark code to identify and eliminate computational bottlenecks.

  • Balance accuracy, robustness, and execution speed for production deployment

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Required:

  • Advanced Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Computer Vision, Computer Science, Applied Mathematics, Physics, or a related field

  • Extensive hands‑on experience with 2D and 3D Digital Image Correlation, including practical deployment on real imaging systems.

  • Strong foundation in computer vision, numerical methods, optimization, and image processing.

  • Proven experience developing high‑performance, production‑quality software for computationally intensive applications.

  • Ability to prototype algorithms in Matlab and deploy production implementations in C++

  • Demonstrated ability to optimize software for speed, memory efficiency, and robustness.

Desired attributes:

  • Proven strong interpersonal, communication and organizational skills

  • Able to create, collaborate and work within team environments.

  • Innovative with strong problem-solving capabilities.

  • Self-starter showing front to back ownership and sense of urgency

Preferred:

  • Real‑time DIC measurement systems in aerospace, automotive, biomechanics, materials testing, or similar domains.

  • GPU acceleration and heterogeneous computing architectures.

  • Familiarity with uncertainty quantification or metrology standards

  • Experience delivering commercial or customer‑deployed scientific software products.

  • Familiarity with material testing systems

Working Conditions:

Office & Laboratory environment with little, if any, exposure to adverse conditions.

Reporting Relationship:

Reports to Technical Engineering Manager.

Compensation Information:

This position has a starting salary range of $140,000-$160,000 per year. Pay is determined by several factors, including a candidate’s experience, relevant skills, and qualifications
