Job description

???? Associate GIS Analyst
Help map the future of conservation

At Westervelt Ecological Services (WES), we restore and conserve wetlands, streams, and endangered species habitats across the U.S. Our work helps offset environmental impacts from developmentโ€”creating lasting ecological solutions that benefit landowners, agencies, communities, and the landscapes we protect.

With projects in 14 states, our teams collaborate closely with landowners, government agencies, businesses, and land trusts to turn data into action on the ground.

About the Role

Weโ€™re looking for a Sacramento, CA based Associate GIS Analyst to join our GIS team. In this role, youโ€™ll support real-world conservation and restoration projects by turning geospatial data into clear, accurate maps and tools used by scientists, field crews, and decision-makers.

Youโ€™ll work closely with the GIS Manager and senior GIS staff, gaining hands-on experience with GIS analysis, web mapping, mobile data collection, and field technologies. This is a great opportunity for someone early in their GIS career who enjoys variety, learning new tools, and seeing their work directly impact conservation outcomes.

What Youโ€™ll Do
  • Create high-quality print and online maps showing site conditions, habitat, hydrology, species occurrences, and project designs
  • Build and maintain ArcGIS Online web maps and datasets used by field teams and project managers
  • Assist with spatial and raster analysis to support project planning and decision-making
  • Research, obtain, and organize publicly available geospatial datasets
  • Support and maintain historic species and property data
  • Coordinate with field crews to download, QC, correct, and digitize field data
  • Provide first-level support for GPS and mobile data collection tools (Trimble GPS, iPads, Eos Arrow GNSS)
  • Participate in field work, including GPS data collection and drone flights, as needed
  • Support business development by preparing data for modeling and scenario analysis
  • Pitch in where neededโ€”this is a team that shares responsibilities and works cross-functionally

What You Bring
  • Bachelorโ€™s degree in Geography, Environmental Science, or a related field
or a GIS Certificate from a 1โ€“2 year program
  • 1โ€“2 years of GIS-related experience (work or hands-on coursework)
  • Experience with ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online, and/or Esri mobile apps (Field Maps, Survey123)
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to follow documented workflows
  • Comfort juggling multiple tasks while meeting deadlines
  • Curiosity, technical aptitude, and a willingness to learn new tools
  • A service mindset and desire to support both internal and external partners
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating with a close-knit team

Nice to Have
  • Experience with Experience Builder, Story Maps, Field Maps Designer
  • Know how to create metadata and GIS documentation
  • Intermediate Excel skills
  • Coursework or experience in remote sensing or raster data
  • Background in habitat, species, land use, soils, or parcel data
  • Experience using AI tools or building AI workflows for data analysis
  • Exposure to web mapping technologies (e.g., JavaScript)

Why Westervelt?
  • Pay range $70-80K plus an 8% annual bonus target.
  • Full benefit package to include health care, paid time off (vacation, sick holiday), 401k with match, flexible work hours, including work from home potential
  • You get to make a difference! Work on projects that directly support conservation and restoration
  • Learn and grow in a supportive environment that values accuracy, teamwork, and innovation
