Senior Gis Data Engineer information

What does a senior GIS data engineer do?

A Senior GIS Data Engineer is responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining geospatial data systems and infrastructure. They work with geographic information system (GIS) technologies to collect, store, analyze, and visualize spatial data. Their role often includes optimizing data pipelines, integrating various geospatial datasets, and ensuring data quality and performance. Additionally, they may collaborate with other engineers, data scientists, and stakeholders to support mapping applications or location-based services. Senior GIS Data Engineers typically have advanced experience with programming, spatial databases, and GIS software.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a senior GIS data engineer?

To thrive as a Senior GIS Data Engineer, you need expertise in spatial data analysis, database management, programming (often in Python or SQL), and a degree in geography, computer science, or a related field. Familiarity with GIS platforms (such as ArcGIS or QGIS), cloud-based data services, and certifications like Esri Technical Certification are highly valued. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help in collaborating across teams and delivering precise data solutions. These capabilities are essential to ensure the accuracy, scalability, and usability of geospatial data in supporting organizational decision-making.

How does a senior GIS data engineer typically collaborate with cross-functional teams to deliver geospatial solutions?

As a Senior GIS Data Engineer, you will frequently work alongside data scientists, software developers, and project managers to design, implement, and optimize geospatial data pipelines. Collaboration often involves gathering project requirements, integrating diverse data sources, and ensuring that spatial data aligns with application needs. Effective communication is key, as you will be responsible for translating technical GIS concepts into actionable insights for stakeholders and helping to troubleshoot data-related challenges across teams.

What is the difference between Senior Gis Data Engineer vs GIS Analyst?

This is not a maintenance role-you'll have meaningful technical ownership and influence over how data is architected, processed, and delivered across our systems and product suite.
You'll tackle large-scale, complex data challenges while driving architectural decisions, establishing engineering best practices, and designing solutions for scalability, reliability, performance, and cost efficiency. As a senior member of the team, you'll collaborate across engineering and product, provide technical guidance and mentorship, and help shape the evolution of our platform toward a more modern, scalable, and intelligent data architecture.
Required Experience (Must Have)
• Expert Python & SQL Developer
• Strong AWS Experience (Lambda, Glue, State Machines, Fargate, Cloud Formation, RedShift)
• Strong Experience with Semi-Structured Data (XML, CSV, JSON, Parquet)

• Experience with Databricks (Delta Lake, Notebooks, SQL Analytics)
• Experience with Kubernetes (Cluster Orchestration, Container Networking, Pod Management)
• Experience with DevOps, CI/CD, Deployment Orchestration (Octopus Deploy)
• Experience with Agentic AI (LangGraph, MCP Servers, Agent Frameworks)
• Experience with Data Handling (Pandas / NumPy, Apache Spark, Ray)
Helpful Experience (Nice to Have)
• Experience with LLMs, Machine Learning & Deep Learning Libraries, AI Application Frameworks, Vector Databases
• Experience with Automotive Data / Industry
• Experience with Agile / Scrum
Primary Responsibilities
• Analyze large, and complex, data sets
• Design, develop and coordinate the generation of Data Pipelines
• Work collaboratively with team to plan and solve complex problems
• Design for, or optimize existing pipelines, for performance and cost
Why Join MOTOR
• Work on high-impact data products used across the automotive industry
• Real ownership and influence over platform direction
• Backed by Hearst-stable, but with room to innovate
• Collaborative team solving meaningful, complex problems
Additional Details
• Hybrid schedule: 3 days onsite in Troy, MI
