Job description

This position is for a professional contributor in catastrophe risk management, who works under moderate supervision. The individual will assist other team members in gathering and preparing data for catastrophe analyses, by reviewing exposure data for accuracy, validity, and identifying abnormalities. The candidate will perform catastrophe risk analytics necessary for reinsurance evaluation under the guidance of senior team members. The position requires a self-starter who manages moderately complex analyses in partnership with internal and external teams to confidently communicate needs, findings, and recommendations. The candidate should have a willingness to continually develop skills in risk management and the (re)insurance industry.

Responsibilities:

Key responsibilities will include, but not limited to:

  • Work directly with underwriters to gather and prepare quarterly portfolio rolls up for catastrophe modeling. Assess the data quality to ensure the data used in the analysis is fit for purpose.
  • Analyze changes in exposure and the associated impact of catastrophe model results. Discuss reasonableness of loss distribution results with underwriting team and senior management.
  • Perform loss and accumulation analyses using vendor catastrophe modeling software, extract and transform outputs to calculate risk exposure and losses for reporting.
  • Analyze how the distribution of results and relevant risk measures changes the application of various proposed reinsurance alternatives. Use vendor catastrophe modeling software to provide price indications for reinsurance alternative structures.
  • Collaborate with junior team members in basic aspects of property (re)insurance and especially catastrophe modeling, including how to prepare data and interpreting insurance terms to catastrophe model.
  • Incorporate data into spatial visualization tools to assist in monitoring aggregations and profitability analytics suited to company underwriting objectives and corporate portfolio objectives.
  • Assist senior team members in preparing and formatting summaries, presentations, and reports into clear, concise deliverables of potential risk and loss results.
  • Willingness to consciously strengthen relationships with internal and external partners. Take part in integration and coordination of how internal tools are developed and delivered.
  • Perform ad hoc analytics for new business, catastrophe event response, rating agency and regulatory disclosures, data augmentation, and data quality scoring.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 3 years of experience working with commercial catastrophe model Verisk. Familiarity with Moody’s RMS, or KatRisk, a plus.
  • Bachelor’s degree in mathematics, economics, engineering, and/or related natural science.
  • Experience with Microsoft SQL, additional programming knowledge beneficial (e.g., Python or R) or experience working with Alteryx.
  • Some knowledge of data warehousing (e.g., Snowflake).
  • Geospatial analytical experience (i.e., GIS software) is beneficial
  • Proficient in using Microsoft technology (e.g., Office 365 apps).
  • Fundamental knowledge in (re)insurance industry.
