What is a senior full stack software developer?

A Senior Full Stack Software Developer is an experienced professional who designs, develops, and maintains both the front-end and back-end components of web applications. They are proficient in multiple programming languages and frameworks, enabling them to work on the entire technology stack, from databases and servers to user interfaces. In addition to coding, they often lead projects, mentor junior developers, and help architect scalable solutions that meet business needs. Their role requires strong problem-solving skills, a deep understanding of software development best practices, and the ability to collaborate with cross-functional teams.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a senior full stack software developer?

A Senior Full Stack Software Developer needs advanced proficiency in both front-end and back-end programming languages, strong problem-solving skills, and several years of relevant software development experience. Familiarity with frameworks like React or Angular, back-end technologies such as Node.js or Django, and experience with cloud platforms, CI/CD tools, and version control systems like Git are typically required. Excellent communication, teamwork, and leadership abilities help developers collaborate effectively and mentor junior team members. These skills are crucial for designing robust, scalable applications and leading complex projects to successful completion.

What types of projects and technologies can a senior full stack software developer expect to work on, and how does the team typically collaborate?

As a Senior Full Stack Software Developer, you can expect to work on a diverse range of projects such as developing scalable web applications, integrating APIs, and optimizing system performance. The tech stack often includes front-end frameworks like React or Angular, back-end environments such as Node.js, Python, or Java, and databases like PostgreSQL or MongoDB. Collaboration is highly cross-functional—you’ll regularly coordinate with product managers, UX/UI designers, QA engineers, and other developers through agile methodologies, code reviews, and sprint planning sessions. This role offers opportunities to mentor junior developers, influence architectural decisions, and contribute to continuous process improvement.

What is the difference between Senior Full Stack Software Developer vs Software Engineer?

AspectSenior Full Stack Software DeveloperSoftware Engineer
CredentialsBachelor's degree in CS or related field; experience in full stack developmentBachelor's degree in CS or related field; may have certifications in specific technologies
Work EnvironmentCollaborates across front-end and back-end teams, often in agile settingsDesigns, develops, and maintains software applications, often in teams or individually
Industry UsageCommon in tech companies, startups, and agencies requiring versatile development skillsWidely used across industries for software development roles

While both roles involve software development, a Senior Full Stack Software Developer specializes in both front-end and back-end technologies, often taking on leadership responsibilities. A Software Engineer may focus on specific areas of software design and implementation, with less emphasis on full stack expertise. The roles overlap in skills and industry usage, but the senior developer typically has broader responsibilities and experience in full stack development.

Senior Full Stack Software Engineer - Robotics

ATI

Woburn, MA • On-site

Full-time

Posted 12 days ago

Job description

About ATI:

Automated Tire (ATI) is on a mission to reinvent tire changing and wheel balancing using cutting-edge robotics. We are transforming a process that hasn’t fundamentally changed in decades into an automated, high-performance system built for the future of automotive service.

Founded by experienced entrepreneurs and backed by leading players across the automotive and tire industries, ATI is building technology that will redefine how cars are serviced. Our team combines deep robotics expertise with real world deployment, moving fast from prototype to production and scaling solutions directly in the field.

Position Overview:

We're looking for a Senior Robotics Full Stack Software Engineer to join our team and take a senior technical leadership role in building the software that turns raw robot capability into a reliable, operable, and measurable product. You'll bring technical judgment to how we architect and build across the stack, from operator-facing web applications and cloud services to the data infrastructure and behavior systems that drive autonomous decision-making. In addition, you’ll help set the best practices and standards for the engineers around you.

This is a hands-on technical leadership role. You’ll write code daily across several languages; make architectural decisions that shape how our robots are operated, monitored, and improved. In addition you will help mentor our growing software engineering team. The tools you build will be used by operators, field teams, and roboticists to deploy fleets, supervise autonomy, and interact with and understand how robots perform in the real world. You’ll need to think carefully about reliability, real-time data, observability, and clear UX for high-stakes operational environments.

Responsibilities:
  • Help design and contribute to software across the entire robotics stack from architecture through deployment
  • Develop and maintain behavior trees and the decision-making logic that governs robot autonomy, along with the tooling to author, visualize, and debug them
  • Work with robotics engineers to build reliable and debuggable data pipelines between independent processes to connect sensors with reasoning, free from race conditions and deadlocks
  • Help define, instrument, and visualize operational metrics (uptime, autonomy/intervention rate, mission success, throughput, MTBF, failure modes) so the team can measure and improve robot performance and fleet health
  • Establish engineering best practices across the stack, including testing, CI/CD, monitoring, and fleet observability
  • Build responsive, intuitive web interfaces for fleet monitoring, mission planning, teleoperation, and operational dashboards
  • Mentor and guide engineers, fostering their growth and raising the team's technical bar
  • Collaborate with cross-functional partners across robotics software, hardware, perception, controls, data science, and field operations
  • Proactively identify technical risks and architectural trade-offs, and communicate them clearly to leadership

Requirements

  • 7+ years of professional software development experience with strong full stack range across front end and backend
  • Experience developing and deploying software in a robotics company
  • Comfortable working across multiple languages: we use Go and Python in backend services and tooling and TypeScript on the front end
  • Demonstrated experience building and shipping production front end applications (React or similar)
  • Background in robotics analytics, fleet observability, or operational metrics and dashboards
  • Proven experience in system architecture, API design and hands-on implementation
  • Experience with messaging and streaming systems (queues, pub/sub, WebSockets)
  • Experience with CI/CD pipelines and automation tools (e.g., GitHub Actions, Jenkins)
  • Strong understanding of software engineering principles including SOLID, clean code, and test-driven development
  • Exposure to real-time telemetry streaming and analytics (WebSockets, MQTT, OpenTelemetry)
  • Excellent problem-solving, debugging, and communication skills

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with robot autonomy frameworks, behavior trees, or state machines (e.g., BehaviorTree.CPP, py_trees)
  • Experience with ROS / ROS2 or similar robotics middleware
  • Experience with data visualization for telemetry, maps, or spatial data
  • Familiarity with robot log/data tooling and replay (e.g., ROS bags, structured event logs)
  • Experience with teleoperation, low-latency video streaming, or remote supervision interfaces
  • Experience with simulation environments (e.g., MuJoCo, Isaac Sim) and software-in-the-loop testing
  • Experience with edge/on-robot services, OTA deployment, or fleet orchestration
  • Contributions to open-source projects
