What are Senior Fluidics Engineers?

Senior Fluidics Engineers are specialized professionals who design, analyze, and optimize systems that control the behavior and movement of fluids, such as liquids and gases, often at the micro or macro scale. They play a crucial role in industries like biotechnology, medical devices, automotive, and aerospace by developing components like pumps, valves, and microfluidic devices. As senior-level engineers, they lead teams, oversee complex projects, and contribute to product innovation and troubleshooting. Their expertise ensures that fluidic systems operate efficiently, reliably, and safely to meet stringent industry standards.

What is the difference between Senior Fluidics Engineer vs Fluidics Engineer?

AspectSenior Fluidics EngineerFluidics Engineer
Required CredentialsBachelor's or Master's in Mechanical, Chemical, or Electrical Engineering; experience in fluid systemsBachelor's degree in related engineering fields; entry-level experience preferred
Work EnvironmentResearch labs, manufacturing facilities, R&D departmentsDesign offices, testing labs, manufacturing settings
Employer & Industry UsageTech companies, aerospace, medical device firmsSimilar industries, often as entry or mid-level roles

The main difference between a Senior Fluidics Engineer and a Fluidics Engineer lies in experience and responsibility. Senior roles typically involve project leadership, advanced problem-solving, and mentorship, while Fluidics Engineers focus on design and testing tasks. Both roles require similar educational backgrounds and are used across industries like aerospace, medical devices, and tech companies.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Senior Fluidics Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Senior Fluidics Engineer, you need an advanced understanding of fluid dynamics, mechanical engineering principles, and typically a degree in mechanical, chemical, or biomedical engineering. Experience with simulation tools like CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics), CAD software, and familiarity with industry standards are essential, as are certifications in relevant engineering disciplines. Strong problem-solving abilities, effective communication, and project leadership skills set top candidates apart. These competencies ensure the development of innovative, reliable fluidic systems and efficient collaboration across multidisciplinary teams.

What are some common challenges faced by Senior Fluidics Engineers when working on multidisciplinary teams?

Senior Fluidics Engineers often collaborate closely with mechanical, electrical, and software engineers to develop integrated systems. A common challenge is ensuring fluidic designs are compatible with the broader system requirements, such as space constraints, manufacturability, and electronic controls. Effective communication across disciplines is crucial to balance performance, reliability, and cost considerations. Senior engineers are expected to proactively identify potential integration issues early in the design process and facilitate solutions through clear documentation and regular cross-functional meetings.

Job description

Blue Marble Space is hiring a Senior Fluidics Engineer - Assembly & Test (Individual Contributor, Sterile Spaceflight Biological Systems). The position requires physical presence in Mountain View, CA, and is therefore not remote. The laboratory is located at NASA Ames Research Center, a US federal facility and requires US Citizenship. Relocation costs and visa sponsorships are not available. The start date is ~ July 5, 2026.
Position Summary
We are seeking a Senior Fluidics Engineer to assemble, integrate, and test flight-ready fluidic systems for biological payloads in spaceflight environments. This is a hands-on, execution-focused role with an emphasis on precision assembly under sterile conditions, including work in biosafety cabinets using aseptic technique. The ideal candidate brings deep experience with spaceflight hardware and thrives in a build-and-test environment, consistently delivering high-quality hardware without a primary focus on design ownership or team management. Experience aligned with environments such as NASA, SpaceX, or Blue Origin is strongly desired.
Key Responsibilities
โ€ข Execute hands-on assembly of fluidic subsystems and biological payload hardware, including tubing, fittings, pumps, valves, and reservoirs.
โ€ข Perform aseptic assembly within biosafety cabinets (BSCs) to maintain sterility of biological interfaces and reagents.
โ€ข Apply and maintain strict sterile technique during installation of reagent systems, culture chambers, and fluid pathways.
โ€ข Conduct leak checks, flow verification, priming, and functional testing without compromising sterility.
โ€ข Operate and maintain fluidic test stands and sterile workspaces, ensuring readiness and compliance.
โ€ข Perform sterilization of components and assemblies using autoclaving; organize hardware shipments for treatment by ethylene oxide (EtO), and e-beam irradiation.
โ€ข Follow detailed work instructions and SOPs with high precision and consistency.
โ€ข Document all assembly, sterilization, and test activities with full traceability.
โ€ข Troubleshoot hardware and process issues during build and test, escalating design-related concerns appropriately.
โ€ข Partner with engineering, biology, and quality teams to ensure hardware meets flight requirements.
Required Qualifications
โ€ข Master's degree or equivalent practical experience in Mechanical Engineering, Bioengineering, Chemical Engineering, or related field.
โ€ข 10+ years of hands-on experience with spaceflight hardware assembly, integration, and test.
โ€ข Experience performing aseptic work in biosafety cabinets (BSCs).
โ€ข Proven experience sterilizing fluidic components using autoclaving.
โ€ข Strong understanding of contamination control and maintaining sterility through complex, multi-step processes.
โ€ข Experience in fluid system testing (leak testing, flow measurement, pressure testing).
โ€ข Ability to read and execute from engineering drawings, procedures, and build documentation.
โ€ข High attention to detail and disciplined, repeatable execution.
Preferred Qualifications
โ€ข Experience supporting multiple biological or life sciences payloads for spaceflight.
โ€ข Familiarity with microfluidic systems.
โ€ข Experience working in both cleanroom and biosafety cabinet environments.
โ€ข Prior work with organizations such as NASA.
Key Skills
โ€ข Advanced aseptic technique.
โ€ข Sterilization methods and material handling.
โ€ข Precision fluidic assembly.
โ€ข Procedure-driven execution.
โ€ข Hardware troubleshooting.
Work Environment
This is a deeply hands-on role spanning laboratory, cleanroom, and environmental test settings. Daily work includes extended time in biosafety cabinets performing sterile assembly, along with operation of fluidic test systems and participation in qualification testing.
Impact
You will be directly responsible for building and validating sterile, flight-ready biological fluidic systems-ensuring hardware performs reliably in space and safeguarding mission-critical science.
