Role:

We are seeking an Environmental Scientist who combines strong project delivery leadership, client management, and team collaboration skills with deep technical expertise. This individual will deliver high-quality outcomes to our clients, while leveraging their professional network and Hatch's strong industry reputation to expand our presence in the environmental consulting space across the region. In addition, this individual will play a key leadership role in the growth, mentoring, and performance of the Thunder Bay Environment, People, and Place team, both as the senior team member in the office, and as a collaborator across the region.

In this role, you will contribute significantly to the approach, methodology, planning, and execution of environmental projects across our mining and metals, energy, and infrastructure sectors. You will serve as a key point of contact for clients, senior leaders, sponsors, and stakeholders, while coordinating resources, and driving project success from project identification and proposal development, through leading the execution and project close-out. This role is responsible for all environmental project deliverables, meeting all applicable quality, schedule, and budget expectations.

In this role you will:

  • Take on the senior position on the Environment, People, and Place team within the Thunder Bay office, collaborating across disciplines and regional teams, leading subject matter experts and fostering innovation to position the firm as a leader in environmental innovation in the region
  • Lead pursuit identification and proposal creation including scope definition, approach and methodology, level of effort, delivery team planning, and final reviews, with support from leadership, peers, and the commercial & contract management team
  • Contribute to high-value contract negotiations and ensure client satisfaction through proactive engagement and service delivery
  • Be accountable for project execution, either directly or as a project sponsor, reviewing deliverables and ensuring client-specific needs are met
  • Build and maintain a strong client network, leveraging existing relationships, developing pipeline, expanding key accounts, and supporting the growth strategy of the environmental practice
  • Tailor global best practices to client-specific needs and regulatory contexts
  • Anticipate and resolve project challenges across fast-paced, multi-faceted, diverse projects
  • Guide and mentor multidisciplinary teams, providing strategic, technical, and commercial leadership
  • Deliver measurable project outcomes (e.g., environmental performance, cost savings, schedule acceleration, risk mitigation)
  • Ensure high-quality, on-time, and on-budget engagement delivery
  • Provide technical and peer review for client deliverables
  • Structure complex problems and guide teams in delivering impactful solutions
  • Recruit and develop the next generation of environmental leaders at Hatch
  • Support and be involved with pursuits and projects in adjacent communities of practice such as community and Indigenous engagement, socioeconomics, and placemaking, as required
  • Champion Hatch's mission and values across all project and team initiatives to create positive change
     

What you bring:

  • Success leading environmental studies, impact assessments, monitoring and management programs in the metals/mining, infrastructure, and/or energy sectors
  • Deep experience delivering environmental consulting services across northwestern Ontario, with a network of client contacts in the region, and expertise in applicable regulatory requirements
  • Proven experience with permitting and regulatory compliance for capital projects, including experience delivering environmental services under an EPCM delivery model
  • Strong project management and people leadership capabilities, taking ownership of project outcomes, connecting with the broader business for execution support, and knowing when to ask for help
  • Experience working alongside, with, or for Indigenous clients, developing long term relationships, and delivery partnerships
  • Consensus-building and cross-discipline team leadership skills
  • Ability to anticipate future project challenges and position client conversations to ensure both project success and the client's desired outcomes are achieved while nurturing long-term relationships
  • Project delivery commercial acumen to understand contractual conditions that impact execution, effectively monitor budgets, track earned value, and proactively take actions to mitigate unfavourable trends
  • Demonstrated success in client relationship management and business development
  • Effective communication with strong analytical, writing, and presentation skills
  • Minimum twelve years of directly-relevant experience in environmental consulting
  • Bachelor's or master's degree in environmental science, engineering, or a related field
  • MTO Registration and Qualification System (RAQS) certification in Class Environmental Assessment, Natural Sciences and/or Fisheries Assessment Specialist categories, or the demonstrated experience and training to attain these
  • Willingness and ability to travel domestically and internationally as required

Base salary range: $115,000 - $165,000

Your individual compensation within this range will depend on factors such as skills, experience, qualifications and location.
