What is a senior embedded software engineer?

A Senior Embedded Software Engineer is an experienced professional who designs, develops, tests, and maintains software that runs on embedded systems—specialized computing devices that are not traditional computers, such as automotive control systems, medical devices, or consumer electronics. They often work closely with hardware engineers to ensure software integrates seamlessly with hardware components. Senior engineers typically lead projects, mentor junior staff, and contribute to system architecture and design decisions. Their expertise includes programming languages like C or C++, real-time operating systems, and debugging tools specialized for embedded environments.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a senior embedded software engineer?

To thrive as a Senior Embedded Software Engineer, you need deep expertise in embedded C/C++ programming, real-time operating systems (RTOS), and a strong background in computer engineering or a related field. Familiarity with hardware debugging tools (such as oscilloscopes and logic analyzers), version control systems (like Git), and relevant certifications (e.g., ARM Accredited Engineer) is typically required. Exceptional problem-solving, communication, and project leadership skills help you collaborate effectively and mentor junior engineers. These competencies ensure the creation of robust, efficient, and reliable embedded systems critical for product success.

What are some common challenges senior embedded software engineers face when integrating software with new hardware platforms?

Senior Embedded Software Engineers often encounter challenges such as ensuring software compatibility with diverse hardware architectures, optimizing for limited memory or processing power, and debugging hardware-software interactions. These engineers must frequently collaborate with hardware teams to resolve timing issues, manage device drivers, and ensure reliable system performance. Successfully navigating these challenges requires strong problem-solving skills, adaptability, and a deep understanding of both hardware constraints and software design.

What is the difference between Senior Embedded Software Engineer vs Embedded Software Engineer?

AspectSenior Embedded Software EngineerEmbedded Software Engineer
Required CredentialsBachelor's/Master's in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related field; experience in embedded systemsBachelor's degree in relevant field; entry-level to mid-level experience
Work EnvironmentDesigning, developing, testing embedded systems for hardware productsDeveloping firmware and software for embedded devices, often under supervision
Employer & Industry UsageTech companies, automotive, aerospace, consumer electronicsSimilar industries, often as part of product development teams

Job description

At Rite-Hite, your work makes an impact. As the global leader in loading dock and door equipment, we design and deliver solutions that keep our customers safe, secure, and productive. Here, you'll find innovation, stability, and the chance to grow your career as part of a team that's always looking ahead.
PURPOSE AND SCOPE
Rite-Hite is a global leader in industrial safety and efficiency solutions. As part of the company's digital transformation journey, we are seeking an Architect, Embedded Software to define and guide the embedded software architecture that underpins connected, intelligent, secure, and safety-critical products.
The Architect, Embedded Software is responsible for establishing scalable, reliable, and secure embedded software platforms that support control systems, sensors, and connected devices across the product portfolio. This role ensures embedded software is aligned with enterprise product and digital strategies while supporting long-term extensibility and maintainability.
The architect partners closely with product management, electrical and mechanical engineering, hardware architecture, edge and cloud software teams, and quality organizations to translate strategic requirements into robust embedded software foundations.
CORE RESPONSIBILITIES
Embedded Software Architecture Strategy
  • Define and maintain reference architectures, design patterns, and standards for embedded software across control products and connected devices.

  • Establish common approaches for real-time operating systems, middleware, drivers, communication stacks, and application frameworks.

  • Ensure embedded software architectures support scalability, reliability, safety, security, and updateability.

Platform Enablement and Product Support
  • Partner with product management and engineering teams to enable new and evolving product capabilities through reusable embedded software platforms.

  • Guide architectural decisions related to performance, resource constraints, portability, and hardware abstraction.

  • Promote reuse and consistency of embedded software components across products and platforms.

Safety, Security, and Lifecycle Management
  • Define embedded software standards aligned with functional safety, cybersecurity, and regulatory requirements.

  • Ensure architectures support secure boot, authentication, update mechanisms, and long-term maintainability.

  • Participate in design and architecture reviews to assess risk, safety, and compliance readiness.

Integration with Broader Systems
  • Collaborate with hardware, edge, AI/ML, vision, and cloud teams to ensure embedded software integrates seamlessly into broader system architectures.

  • Support hybrid deployment models where embedded software interacts with edge platforms, mobile applications, and cloud services.

  • Ensure clear interfaces and responsibilities across system layers.

Cross-Functional Technical Leadership
  • Collaborate across product management, embedded development teams, hardware engineering, manufacturing, quality, and service organizations.

  • Provide technical leadership, mentorship, and architectural guidance to embedded software teams.

  • Influence architectural decisions through expertise, data, and collaboration rather than direct authority.

Supervisory Responsibilities
  • This role does not have direct reports but is expected to provide technical leadership and architectural guidance across multiple teams.

QUALIFICATIONS
Education & Experience:
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related technical field required; Master's degree preferred.

  • 8+ years of experience developing embedded software for industrial, connected, or safety-critical systems.

  • Demonstrated experience in embedded software architecture or senior technical leadership roles.

Knowledge / Skill Requirements:
  • Strong understanding of embedded software architectures, real-time systems, and low-level software design.

  • Experience with RTOS, communication protocols, and hardware abstraction layers.

  • Familiarity with functional safety, cybersecurity, and certification considerations for embedded systems.

  • Ability to balance performance, resource constraints, and long-term scalability.

  • Strong communication skills and ability to influence cross-functional stakeholders.

Leadership & Collaboration:
  • Platform-oriented technical leader with strong systems-thinking skills.

  • Comfortable partnering across software, hardware, product management, and quality organizations.

  • Data-driven decision maker who balances innovation with reliability and maintainability.

Why Join Rite-Hite Digital Solutions?
