As a senior electrical designer, your job is to use electrical knowledge and design principles to develop electrical drawings for each project you take. This includes determining what equipment can be used, ensuring the final electrical plan meets the client's needs and specifications, and verifying construction status in the field to ensure the plan represents as-built conditions. Senior electrical designers frequently check design drawings from suppliers and other resources, provide on-site support during construction, ensure plans comply with all relevant installation codes, and interact with contractors and subcontractors. This job requires a moderate amount of travel and the ability to cooperate with a team.
| Aspect | Senior Electrical Designer | Electrical Engineer |
|---|---|---|
| Credentials | Typically requires a degree in electrical engineering or related field; certifications like PE or LEED are common | Requires a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering; PE license often preferred |
| Work Environment | Design-focused roles in consulting firms, construction, or industrial settings | Design, analysis, and project management in various industries including manufacturing, utilities, and construction |
| Responsibilities | Creating electrical schematics, ensuring code compliance, and supporting construction | Designing systems, performing calculations, overseeing project development, and ensuring safety standards |
While both roles require electrical engineering knowledge, Senior Electrical Designers focus more on detailed design and drafting, whereas Electrical Engineers often handle broader engineering analysis and project oversight.
