What is a Senior EHS Engineer?

A Senior EHS (Environmental, Health, and Safety) Engineer is a professional responsible for developing, implementing, and overseeing programs and policies that ensure a safe and environmentally compliant workplace. They analyze workplace processes to identify potential hazards, conduct risk assessments, and provide training to employees on safety procedures. Additionally, they ensure compliance with federal, state, and local environmental and safety regulations, and often lead teams in investigating incidents and recommending corrective actions. Senior EHS Engineers typically have several years of experience in the field and may also mentor junior staff.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Senior EHS Engineer?

To thrive as a Senior EHS Engineer, you need expertise in environmental health and safety regulations, risk assessment, and compliance management, typically supported by a degree in engineering or environmental science and relevant certifications such as CSP or CIH. Familiarity with EHS management systems, incident reporting software, and auditing tools is essential. Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills help drive safety culture and coordinate across departments. These competencies ensure regulatory compliance, reduce workplace incidents, and promote a safe, sustainable work environment.
