What does a senior design engineer do?

A Senior Design Engineer is responsible for leading the design and development of products, systems, or components, often within engineering or manufacturing industries. They create detailed technical drawings and specifications, oversee project timelines, and collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure designs meet safety, quality, and efficiency standards. Additionally, they mentor junior engineers, troubleshoot design challenges, and may interact with clients or stakeholders to clarify requirements and present solutions. Their role combines technical expertise, project management, and leadership skills.

How does a senior design engineer typically collaborate with cross-functional teams during a product development cycle?

Senior Design Engineers frequently work alongside professionals from manufacturing, quality assurance, project management, and marketing to ensure the successful development and launch of products. They lead design reviews, gather input from other departments, and address technical challenges collaboratively. This role requires strong communication skills and the ability to balance design intent with practical constraints such as cost, manufacturability, and regulatory requirements. Regular meetings and iterative feedback loops are a standard part of the process, making teamwork and adaptability essential for success.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a senior design engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Senior Design Engineer, you need a strong background in engineering principles, advanced problem-solving abilities, and a relevant bachelor's or master's degree in engineering. Proficiency with CAD software, simulation tools, and familiarity with industry standards or certifications such as PE (Professional Engineer) are typically required. Leadership, effective communication, and project management skills set top performers apart in this role. These competencies ensure the delivery of innovative, reliable designs while leading teams and projects to successful outcomes.

What is the difference between Senior Design Engineer vs Mechanical Design Engineer?

AspectSenior Design EngineerMechanical Design Engineer
Required CredentialsBachelor's degree in engineering, experience in design, possibly professional engineering licenseBachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or related field, design experience
Work EnvironmentDesign teams, project management, cross-disciplinary collaborationDesign and development of mechanical components, CAD work, prototype testing
Employer & Industry UsageEngineering firms, manufacturing, aerospace, automotiveManufacturing, product design, machinery development

The main difference is that a Senior Design Engineer typically has more experience, leadership responsibilities, and may oversee projects, while a Mechanical Design Engineer focuses on creating and testing mechanical components. Both roles require similar technical skills and work in related environments, but the senior position involves more oversight and strategic input.

We’re seeking a Senior Casting Engineer to support our Electric Systems Power Generation department. In this role, you'll be supporting the design and manufacturing of castings used to produce products like Integrated Drive Generators, Variable Frequency Generators, motors, and ram air turbines.

As a Senior Casting Engineer, you’ll collaborate closely with design engineers, manufacturing engineers, and suppliers to ensure our mechanical and electromagnetic equipment meet rigorous cost, weight, and reliability standards.  You will develop and drive innovative solutions that are necessary to support our supplier and plant sites as we produce and deliver the industry leading products that power the aerospace industry.

What You Will Do

  • Support Aerospace Component Production: Oversee the manufacturability of various components with a focus on housings and other components that are produced via complex geometry sand casting practices.

  • Engineering Drawing Review: Conduct thorough evaluations of engineering drawings to ensure designs are both feasible and optimized for manufacturability.

  • Casting Tooling Design and Evaluation: Design and review tooling for producing casted components, focusing on producibility, quality, and cost.

  • Manufacturing Process Development and Optimization: Collaborate with plant sites and suppliers to develop and refine manufacturing processes, troubleshoot issues, and drive continuous improvement.

  • Standard Work Development: Create and implement standardized work procedures to ensure consistency, quality, and efficiency in production processes.

  • Cost Reduction Initiatives: Work closely with plant sites and suppliers to analyze and reduce standard costs, implementing cost-saving measures without compromising quality.

  • Production Support and Problem Resolution: Identify root causes of production issues and implement corrective actions to maintain smooth and efficient operations.

Qualifications We Prefer

  • Experience designing, producing, or supporting complex-geometry sand-cast components, particularly for aerospace or similar high-tech industries.

  • Proficiency in designing and evaluating tooling for cast components, including patterns, cores, gating, and casting simulation.

  • Experience in developing, optimizing, and troubleshooting manufacturing processes, with a track record of collaboration with plant sites and suppliers.

  • Experience with other processes that may be used in lieu of casting such as, traditional machining hogouts and additive manufacturing via powder bed fusion, material jetting, directed energy deposition, etc.

  • Proven ability to analyze and reduce standard costs while maintaining high quality, with experience in cost management and efficiency improvements.

  • Skilled in identifying root causes of production issues and implementing effective corrective actions to ensure smooth and efficient operations.

  • Ability to review and interpret engineering drawings to ensure designs are feasible and optimized for manufacturability.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills with a demonstrated ability to work effectively within multidisciplinary teams and establish strong working relationships.
