Position Summary:
Fabick Cat is seeking a highly skilled Senior Database Engineer to oversee and support multiple business-critical applications and database platforms across the enterprise. This is not a traditional database administrator role -- the Senior Database Engineer serves as the technical owner across a portfolio of third-party and in-house systems, managing the full project lifecycle from requirements through implementation.

This position plays a critical role in Fabick Cat's data modernization effort, helping define, build, test, and implement a future-state, cloud-based data architecture. This future-state architecture is intended to lend itself heavily to enterprise AI adoption and to support an upcoming ERP migration. The Senior Database Engineer works closely with IT leadership, business partners, and other IT teams to ensure database and data platform solutions are secure, scalable, and aligned with Fabick Cat's strategic objectives and Caterpillar's digital vision.
The position can be based out of Fenton, MO Or Milwaukee, WI
Responsibilities:

Database & Application Platform Ownership
  • Serve as technical owner of multiple third-party and in-house database platforms and applications, overseeing the full project lifecycle including requirements, development, testing, and implementation.
  • Design, build, and administer APIs and system integrations that connect databases, applications, and third-party platforms, ensuring secure, reliable, and well-documented data exchange.
  • Oversee data warehouse operations; troubleshoot and resolve issues across supported systems.
  • Assist with project planning and provide technical database expertise to team members and vendors.
  • Evaluate database technologies and collaborate with vendors to enhance supported platforms and align solutions with business needs.
Data Modernization & Cloud Architecture
  • Actively incorporate AI tools into daily database engineering work -- beyond basic prompting -- to accelerate tasks such as query and script development, troubleshooting, documentation, code review, and data analysis; model and promote effective AI-assisted ways of working for the broader team.
  • Design and support data architecture patterns that enable enterprise AI adoption, including data pipelines, integration points, and governance structures that support AI and agentic workloads.
  • Support the technical planning and execution of the organization's ERP migration ensuring database and data platform readiness.
  • Evaluate and implement cloud database technologies, primarily on Azure, using emerging cloud and AI-enabled data architecture patterns.
Data Governance, Security & Standards
  • Define, develop, communicate, and implement data standards, processes, and procedures for the team and department.
  • Ensure database and data platform solutions adhere to data security, compliance, and governance frameworks, including appropriate data cataloging and access controls.
  • Provide business users with data, reporting, and business intelligence to drive business decisions.

Collaboration & Mentorship
  • Understand and translate business requirements into database and data architecture designs that align with overall business and technology vision.
  • Establish, maintain, and foster relationships within and outside the team, department, and vendors.
  • Provide instruction and guidance to less senior team members on new tasks and assignments; ensure deadlines are met.
  • Listen to and evaluate customer and business needs to determine, provide, and identify high-quality solutions that align with expectations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by management.
Requirements:
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Information Systems, Management Information Systems, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 5+ years of experience in database development, SQL, data warehousing, reporting, and technical problem-solving.
  • Experience supporting enterprise database platforms and applications in a production environment.
  • Experience using AI-assisted development tools (e.g., GitHub Copilot, ChatGPT, Claude) to improve software development and database engineering while maintaining security and compliance.
  • Knowledge of cloud data architecture, data security, governance, and responsible data management practices.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with Microsoft technologies including Azure, Power Apps, Power BI, PowerShell, SSRS, SharePoint Online, and Excel.
  • Experience with Microsoft Dynamics 365 or similar ERP/CRM platforms, including migration projects.
  • Familiarity with agentic AI architectures, Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG), and AI-enabled data pipelines.
  • Familiarity with Caterpillar technologies, enterprise standards, and the Cat Digital ecosystem.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to translate data into actionable insights and recommendations.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with technical and business stakeholders.

Physical Demands & Work Environment

* Primary work is performed in an office or service facility environment with frequent communication by phone and computer.
* Tasks involve sitting for extended periods, using hands and fingers to operate a computer and telephone, and reaching with arms.
* Occasional standing, walking, bending, stooping, crouching and kneeling may be required, especially when verifying equipment status in the yard or assisting with parts logistics.
* Employees are regularly required to talk and hear to communicate with technicians and customers; specific vision abilities include close vision, distance vision, color vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
* Must be able to lift and move up to 25 pounds occasionally (e.g., moving parts or equipment files) and safely handle heavier loads up to 50 pounds with assistance when necessary.
* Work may occasionally involve exposure to a warehouse or outdoor environment with moderate noise and varying weather conditions; appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) should be used as required.
