What is a senior data engineer AI?

Senior Data Engineers in AI are experienced professionals who design, build, and maintain the data infrastructure required for artificial intelligence and machine learning projects. They work with large datasets, create data pipelines, and ensure data is accessible, reliable, and optimized for AI models. Additionally, they collaborate with data scientists and software engineers to implement solutions that support advanced analytics and AI-driven applications. Their role often includes optimizing data storage, ensuring data quality, and integrating new data sources to support evolving business needs.

How does a senior data engineer AI typically collaborate with data scientists and machine learning engineers on AI projects?

A Senior Data Engineer AI plays a crucial role in bridging the gap between raw data and actionable AI models. They work closely with data scientists to understand the data requirements and ensure data pipelines deliver clean, well-structured datasets for model training and evaluation. Collaboration often involves designing scalable architectures, troubleshooting data issues, and optimizing data workflows to support experimentation and deployment. Regular cross-functional meetings and agile sprints are common, allowing for alignment on project goals and seamless handoff between engineering and modeling tasks.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a senior data engineer AI, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Senior Data Engineer AI, you need advanced expertise in data modeling, ETL processes, and strong programming skills in languages like Python or Scala, typically backed by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with big data tools (e.g., Spark, Hadoop), cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, Azure), and experience with AI/ML frameworks such as TensorFlow or PyTorch are essential, and certifications in these areas are highly valued. Exceptional problem-solving, communication, and project management skills help you collaborate across teams and drive complex AI-enabled data solutions. These competencies ensure scalable, high-quality data pipelines that support robust AI applications and organizational decision-making.

What is the difference between Senior Data Engineer Ai vs Data Scientist?

AspectSenior Data Engineer AiData Scientist
Required CredentialsBachelor's/Master's in CS, Data Engineering certificationsBachelor's/Master's in Statistics, Data Science certifications
Work EnvironmentData pipelines, ETL processes, cloud platformsData analysis, modeling, statistical research
Employer & Industry UsageTech companies, finance, healthcareResearch institutions, tech firms, consulting

While both roles work with data, Senior Data Engineer Ai focuses on building and maintaining data infrastructure and pipelines, whereas Data Scientists analyze data to generate insights and models. The roles often collaborate but have distinct skill sets and responsibilities.

About the role We're hiring a Senior Data Engineer to design and build enterprise-scale data platforms that power AI/ML and agentic systems. You'll engineer the AI-ready data foundations—high-quality, governed, and optimized—that advanced analytics and autonomous AI agents depend on.

What you'll do

  • Architect and build scalable, cloud-native data platforms powering AI/ML and agent-based applications

  • Design pipelines that deliver AI-ready data — curated, labeled, contextualized, and feature-rich

  • Build robust ingestion, transformation, and serving layers across batch and real-time

  • Stand up semantic data models, knowledge graphs, and vector databases to power LLMs and AI agents

  • Implement data quality, lineage, and governance frameworks for trust and compliance

  • Partner with AI/ML teams on feature engineering, model training, and inference pipelines

  • Optimize data architectures for performance, scale, and cost

  • Mentor engineers and set best practices for AI-driven data engineering

What you bring

  • 10+ years in data engineering and platform architecture

  • Deep expertise in a major cloud (Azure / AWS / GCP) and modern data ecosystems

  • Hands-on experience with AI/ML data pipelines, feature stores, and model lifecycle support

  • Experience with LLM data pipelines

  • Strong grounding in data governance, metadata management, and security frameworks

Nice to have

  • Data platforms for AI agents / agentic workflows

  • RAG architectures and semantic search

  • Data mesh / domain-oriented data architectures

  • Large-scale enterprise transformation programs
