Job description

The Computing Services central IT division provides services that have a strategic impact on university goals. We make service decisions based on interaction and valuable input from colleagues engaged in the education, research, and administration efforts of the university. We seek a Senior Data Analyst focusing on Power BI and cross-functional systems. This role will be integral to supporting the university's data initiatives, with the mission of eliminating data silos and developing data products that enable the strategic use of institutional data for informed decision-making and growth. We focus on dataset curation, data pipeline optimization, and system integrations, championing data governance and quality. In this role, you will work closely with technology teams and campus partners to execute and deliver data products, fostering an environment where university-wide cross-functional teams thrive through proactive engagement and collaboration.
The ideal candidate will have substantial expertise in Power BI, experience working with Snowflake or other RDBMS systems, and a background in cross-functional data. The Senior Data Analyst will support and enhance data products, collaborating with business partners, cross-functional teams, and departments to understand business processes and workflows. They will develop and optimize analytics and reporting solutions, implement and manage Power BI solutions, and support the implementation of integrations. Success in this position will hinge on the candidate's ability to collaborate effectively and communicate business and technology requirements that further the growth of our data community.
Your core responsibilities will include:
  • Partner with multi-functional teams to document and design data products to meet enterprise decision-making needs. Create and manage data products (inclusive but not limited to data sets, semantic models, and dashboards) in accordance with specifications and CMU's data guidelines and strategy.
  • Support the usage of enterprise data technologies (ie, Snowflake, Power BI, DBT). Provide technical and programming support to business partners in the construction, implementation, and delivery of data products.
  • Facilitate requirements capturing within various domains to develop comprehensive business and requirements documents.
  • Lead all aspects of the creation of functional and technical specifications, changes to requirements, and assess the impact of changes based on business requirements.
  • Develop a deep understanding of our data sources and structures; assist in integrating them into Snowflake, Power BI, AI agents and with internal and external systems.
  • Participate in and define test scenarios, plans, strategies, and the creation of test scripts for data products.
  • Lead the process for identifying and gathering appropriate business requirements to build robust data product solutions that address analytics and reporting needs.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Ideal candidates will demonstrate:
  • Business process analysis skills, particularly within cross-functional domains.
  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • Ability to prioritize work and handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Understanding of structured and unstructured data.
  • Proficiency in SQL query language.
  • Experience in DAX query language.
  • Experience in Data Modeling.
  • Understanding of various systems and processes, preferably Workday, Oracle Financials, and other higher education systems.
  • Experience with DBT is a plus.
  • Experience with data pipeline optimization.
