What does a senior curriculum designer do?

A Senior Curriculum Designer is responsible for developing, evaluating, and refining educational programs and materials. They collaborate with subject matter experts, teachers, and administrators to ensure that curricula meet educational standards and learning objectives. Their role often includes integrating new teaching methods, incorporating technology, and assessing the effectiveness of instructional materials. Senior Curriculum Designers also mentor junior team members and lead curriculum development projects to ensure high-quality educational outcomes.

How does a senior curriculum designer typically collaborate with subject matter experts and other stakeholders during the course development process?

Senior Curriculum Designers play a pivotal role in bridging educational goals with content expertise. They frequently collaborate with subject matter experts (SMEs) to ensure course materials are accurate, relevant, and aligned with learning objectives. Additionally, they work closely with instructional technologists, multimedia specialists, and academic leadership to integrate technology, adhere to institutional standards, and address learner needs. Regular meetings, feedback sessions, and iterative reviews are common, making strong communication and project management skills essential in this role.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a senior curriculum designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Senior Curriculum Designer, you need expertise in instructional design, curriculum development, and educational theory, often supported by a degree in education or instructional design. Familiarity with learning management systems (LMS), course authoring tools like Articulate Storyline or Adobe Captivate, and relevant certifications such as ATD or CPLP are typically required. Exceptional project management, collaboration, and communication skills set top performers apart in this field. These skills and qualifications are crucial for creating effective, engaging curricula that meet organizational learning objectives and drive learner success.

Job Description
Program Overview
This automotive OEM technical training program develops, standardizes, and delivers high-quality learning content for dealership technicians and shop foremen. The program translates complex vehicle systems, diagnostics, and emerging technologies into practical instructor-led, virtual, self-study, and web-based learning experiences. Learning solutions emphasize hands-on application, technical accuracy, interactive design, and continuous improvement through close collaboration with technical trainers, academy leaders, and subject-matter experts.
Position Summary
The Automotive Technical Training Curriculum Developer is a senior instructional designer who designs, develops, updates, and supports technical learning solutions for an automotive OEM. The role creates instructor-led training (ILT), virtual instructor-led training, self-study programs, web-based training, launch training, technical graphics, video, assessments, and supporting digital assets. The developer partners with curriculum designers, technical instructors, subject-matter experts, product support, publications, information technology, and other stakeholders to convert technical information into engaging, learner-centered training for dealership technicians and shop foremen.
This position combines instructional-design capability with hands-on automotive technical expertise. The successful candidate can independently research vehicle systems, use diagnostic and service-information resources, disassemble and reassemble vehicle components when needed, facilitate training, and manage multiple deliverables from discovery through pilot and final release.
The role has strategic purview over the OEM curriculum portfolio, which includes multiple self-study programs, new instructor-led courses, web-based courses, course updates, new self-study programs developed from scratch, and continuing on-site OEM academy support each year. Additional projects may arise as products, technologies, or business priorities change.
Key Responsibilities
  • Design and develop new and updated technical curriculum for instructor-led, virtual instructor-led, self-study, web-based, and vehicle-launch training programs.
  • Develop ILT courses that prioritize hands-on, exercise-driven learning while integrating classroom or virtual instruction, interactive PDF presentation materials, and technician reference guides that support typed learner notes on iPad devices.
  • Create course deliverables including instructor guides, technician reference guides, presentations, course outlines, objectives, storyboards, job aids, video and voiceover scripts, graphics, digital media, and production-direction notes.
  • Develop, revise, and enter post-course assessments in the learning management system assessment tool; ensure assessments align to course objectives and revised content.
  • Build SCORM-compliant web-based training using Articulate Storyline 360 and Rise 360, including learner bookmarking and meaningful interactive learning elements.
  • Create original technical graphics, images, video, and audio assets when needed to ensure accuracy, relevance, and alignment with automotive OEM standards.
  • Develop self-study programs from supplied source material, including translation and editing for U.S. market use, and independently develop self-study programs from concept through final PDF when required.
  • Review existing curriculum, identify duplicate or overlapping objectives across courses, define appropriate objective ownership, and apply sound instructional-design methodology to course development.
  • Research new vehicles, major product changes, diagnostic procedures, systems, and technologies using available vehicle, service, diagnostic, and technical-information resources.
  • Use hands-on automotive skills to inspect, disassemble, and reassemble vehicle products and systems as necessary to validate training content and create accurate learning exercises.
  • Collaborate with technical instructors, curriculum designers, subject-matter experts, product support, help-line, publications, information technology, and other stakeholders to define learning requirements, goals, objectives, and course flow.
  • Participate in start-of-work and research activities, course reviews, pilots, train-the-trainer events, and independent course facilitation as required.
  • Maintain collaborative relationships with on-site and remote partner departments; represent the academy or training organization in cross-functional engagements.
  • Support iPad-based learning delivery by recommending and assisting with iPad-cart administration and deployment activities, including Apple Configurator functions and supervised-device application or operating-system updates as assigned.
  • Maintain a searchable archive of curriculum deliverables and source materials so assets can be reused across training teams and automotive OEM groups.
  • Deliver finalized, form-formatted PDF materials and all required source and development files at course completion; maintain accurate documentation, version control, and quality standards.
  • Manage multiple concurrent projects, communicate progress and risks, and deliver work within established schedules and approved scope.
  • Support change-management processes by documenting requested changes and contributing to revised schedules or effort estimates when project scope changes.

Qualifications
  • Five (5)+ years of automotive technician experience, including practical diagnostic and repair experience.
  • Seven (7)+ years of automotive technical instructional design, curriculum development, or course-development experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to design and write instructor-led, virtual instructor-led, self-study, and web-based technical training using modern interactive, narrative-based, and adult-learning approaches.
  • Experience facilitating technical training and supporting or leading train-the-trainer activities for technical instructors or automotive OEM personnel.
  • Experience developing new courses and updating existing technical curriculum, including objectives, assessments, instructor materials, technician materials, presentations, and digital learning assets.
  • Ability to consult with stakeholders to define training requirements, learning goals, measurable objectives, and instructional strategies.
  • Working knowledge of instructional-design and adult-learning principles, including ADDIE, learning objectives, assessment alignment, and Bloom's Taxonomy.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in both small and large groups of subject-matter experts and curriculum stakeholders.
  • Strong technical writing, editing, communication, organization, and project-management skills, with exceptional attention to detail and quality.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects concurrently and consistently deliver work within defined timelines and expectations.
  • Ability to travel for research, product review, pilots, training delivery, and planning activities.
  • Ability to support an on-site schedule in Auburn Hills, Michigan, at least two days per week.

Technical Skills
  • Microsoft 365 (specifically Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel)
  • Adobe Creative Cloud (specifically Adobe InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, and Premiere)

  • Automotive diagnostic and service-information applications, including ODIS Service or comparable OEM tools
  • Automotive wiring-information systems, including iWire or comparable tools
  • Automotive service-information systems, including Elsa Pro, Elsa2Go, or comparable tools
  • macOS, iOS, Apple mobile-device administration, and Apple Configurator
  • Microsoft SharePoint and Teams

Preferred Qualifications
  • Ten (10) + years of automotive technical instructional design/course development experience
  • Experience developing technical training for battery-electric vehicles, battery systems, advanced driver-assistance systems, and newly introduced vehicle technologies.
  • Experience translating or adapting German and Spanish technical source materials for the U.S. market, or access to qualified translation support.
  • Experience creating interactive PDFs, learner-note capture or reporting workflows, and iPad-based training materials.
  • Experience creating or editing technical video and other digital media assets.
  • Experience working in an automotive OEM academy, technical service center, dealership-training, product-support, or launch-training environment.
