Job description

Job Title: Senior Play - Set Construction Design Advisor 

Location: Cooperstown High School
Reports To: Director of Physical Education, Athletics & Extracurricular Activities- Josh Wagner 
Position Type: Stipend Position (Seasonal)

 
Overview: 

Cooperstown High School is seeking a dedicated and skilled Set Construction Design Advisor to support the Senior Play. This position is responsible for guiding students in the design, construction, and teardown of sets and stage props, working closely with the play directors and auditorium manager to ensure a safe and functional theatrical environment. The advisor plays a key role in helping students develop technical theatre skills and contribute meaningfully behind the scenes.

 
Purpose: 

To supervise and assist senior students in the design, construction, and safe operation of stage sets and props for the annual Senior Play.

 
Key Responsibilities: 
  1. Collaborate with the Senior Play Director and Auditorium Manager to develop a stage design that aligns with the production's vision.

  2. Coordinate work schedules for students in collaboration with the auditorium manager and student director.

  3. Supervise and mentor students during all phases of set construction, providing technical guidance and support as needed.

  4. Ensure safety procedures are followed during all set-building activities, including tool usage, construction, and on-stage movement.

  5. Recruit and manage a technical crew composed of senior students, fostering leadership, teamwork, and responsibility.

  6. Oversee the setup and strike (teardown) of sets and props.

 
Qualifications:  Required: 
  • Familiarity with basic set construction techniques and safe tool usage.

  • Strong organizational and leadership skills.

  • Ability to mentor students in hands-on technical tasks.

  • Reliable availability during rehearsal and construction times, particularly in the weeks leading up to the production.

  Preferred: 
  • Background in theatre production, technical theatre, or stage management.

  • Experience working with high school students in an educational or extracurricular setting.

  • Understanding of fire and safety codes relevant to theatre staging.
