Job description

About Axis:

Axis is a high-octane collective of interdisciplinary designers and problem-solvers who believe that "good enough" is the enemy of excellence. At our core, we bridge the gap between visionary architecture and precision engineering, stripping away the silos of the traditional AEC industry to deliver seamless, buildable brilliance. From the first sketch to the final structural bolt, we work harder and think smarter, obsessing over the details that turn complex challenges into eye-catching and enduring landmarks. We don’t just design spaces; we engineer the future with a relentless drive for innovation and a grit that ensures every project stands as a testament to what's possible.

Axis is committed to fostering a culture that promotes progressive thinking in finding novel solutions to tackling complex design challenges.

Job Summary:

We are seeking a lead architect who thrives at the intersection of bold aesthetics and technical reality. In this role, you won’t just be designing buildings; you will be the driving force behind our architectural studio, shaping the "design language" of our firm and leading a team of talented architects and designers. You will work side-by-side with our entire interdisciplinary team to ensure that every project we deliver is both visually breathtaking and poised to delight future generations.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Set the creative direction for the firm’s major projects, from initial site analysis and massing studies to refined schematic designs
  • Oversee the architectural team, managing workloads, professional development, and the day-to-day workflow of junior, mid-level, and senior architects
  • Attend site evaluation meetings with clients and project meetings
  • Work with clients preparing programming and concept drawings
  • Prepare scale drawings of site, building layout and elevations
  • Consult with team to ensure design is fully aligned with construction budget
  • Consult with client/department to determine functional and spatial requirements of proposed project(s)
  • Represent clients in bid solicitations, reviews and contract awards
  • Act as the primary design voice in client meetings, translating their vision into functional, innovative architectural solutions
  • Prepare information regarding design, structural specifications, materials, color, equipment, and estimated costs
  • Coordinate mechanical, plumbing, electrical, structural, civil engineering and other assigned disciplines during design and construction phases to ensure delivery of a unified design
  • Conduct periodic onsite observation of work construction to monitor compliance with permitted drawings
  • Review drawings and submittals and prepare contract documents for permitting, bidding, and construction
  • Ensure all designs meet local zoning, building codes, and sustainability goals while maintaining the firm’s high standard for excellence.
  • Oversee the design transition from paper to pavement, reviewing shop drawings and conducting site visits to ensure design intent is realized

Required Qualifications:

  • 15+ years of relevant experience in the AEC industry, with at least three years in a leadership or management capacity
  • Bachelor's or master’s degree in architecture (B.Arch or M.Arch) from an accredited program
  • Active NCARB-certified Licensed Architect (RA) with ability for licensure in Georgia in six (6) months and willingness to pursue licensure in additional states
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office Suite, AutoCAD, SketchUp, Revit, and Photoshop
  • Expert understanding of IBC, ADA requirements, and sustainable design frameworks (LEED, WELL, etc.)
  • Experience in space planning and finish selections
  • Leading a project team of junior, mid-level and senior design staff from concept through construction documents
  • Excellent communication skills and problem-solving ability is essential in your work with multi-disciplinary team members and clients; a strong work ethic is required
  • Solid writing skills required for the preparation of proposals, correspondence, reports, and related project documentation
  • Demonstrated attention to detail and accuracy, with an ability to work effectively in a team environment with minimum supervision and high personal standards for quality control
  • Must be highly organized and able to prioritize multiple tasks, demonstrating a flexible approach to work assignments

The Ideal Candidate:

  • As a visionary, you have a portfolio that proves you can push boundaries without losing sight of budget or buildability
  • As a mentor, you enjoy "teaching the craft" and empowering your team to take ownership of their work
  • As a tech-forward designer, you are an expert in the modern AEC stack, utilizing BIM to its fullest potential to streamline delivery
  • As a practice leader, you are heavily integrated in the firm’s business development practice mentoring business relationships and securing work

Why Join Us?

We don't do "copy-paste" architecture. If you want a high-autonomy environment where your ideas are tested and your grit is rewarded, this is your home.
