Job description

Job Title: Sr Design Engineer

Job Description

The Design Engineer develops and supports custom power electronics products from initial concept through full production. This role focuses on AC/DC and DC/DC power conversion design, analog circuit development, circuit simulation, PCB design, testing, troubleshooting, and delivering customer-driven engineering solutions. The engineer collaborates closely with cross-functional teams to create high-performance power supplies for demanding applications and is expected to bring 7–10 years of relevant experience.

Responsibilities

  • Design and develop AC/DC and DC/DC power conversion products for high-performance and demanding applications.
  • Perform analog circuit design, including rectifiers, regulators, filters, oscillators, amplifiers, and magnetic components.
  • Apply isolated and non-isolated power topologies such as Buck, Boost, Buck-Boost, Flyback, Forward, Half-Bridge, and Full-Bridge in product designs.
  • Conduct circuit simulation, worst-case analysis, and validation using industry-standard tools to ensure robust and reliable designs.
  • Execute PCB schematic capture, conduct layout reviews, and develop bills of materials (BOMs) and engineering documentation.
  • Perform hands-on testing and troubleshooting using oscilloscopes, power analyzers, spectrum analyzers, electronic loads, and function generators.
  • Lead prototype development, including validation testing and root cause analysis to resolve design and performance issues.
  • Support customer requirements by participating in technical discussions, preparing technical proposals, and responding to requests for quotations (RFQs).
  • Collaborate with engineering, manufacturing, quality, and customer-facing teams to ensure successful product development and launch.
  • Provide technical leadership and project ownership, driving designs from concept through production while managing timelines and deliverables.

Essential Skills

  • 7–10 years of experience in power electronics design, specifically in AC/DC and DC/DC power conversion.
  • Strong expertise in analog circuit design, including rectifiers, regulators, filters, oscillators, amplifiers, and magnetic components.
  • Hands-on experience with isolated and non-isolated power topologies such as Buck, Boost, Buck-Boost, Flyback, Forward, Half-Bridge, and Full-Bridge.
  • Proficiency with circuit simulation software for analysis, worst-case evaluation, and design validation.
  • Experience using ECAD tools for PCB schematic capture and layout review.
  • Ability to perform comprehensive testing and troubleshooting using oscilloscopes, power analyzers, spectrum analyzers, electronic loads, and function generators.
  • Demonstrated capability in prototype development, validation testing, and root cause analysis.
  • Strong understanding of analog electronics and power conversion systems.
  • Experience working with power semiconductor technologies including silicon (Si), silicon carbide (SiC), and gallium nitride (GaN).
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills for documentation and customer interaction.
  • Strong organizational abilities and attention to detail, with the ability to manage multiple projects and priorities simultaneously.
  • Comfort interacting with customers and supporting technical discussions and proposals.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or Electrical Engineering Technology required.
  • Advanced degree in Electrical Engineering preferred.
  • Experience with military electronics and high-reliability power systems is beneficial.
  • Experience in PCB design and working with PCB assemblies.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills and experience taking ownership of projects from concept through production.
  • Ability to work effectively in cross-functional teams including engineering, manufacturing, quality, and customer-facing groups.

Work Environment

The role is based primarily in an office and laboratory engineering environment that combines design work with hands-on activities. The Design Engineer spends significant time on computer-based design, simulation, and documentation, as well as working directly with electronic prototypes, test equipment, and PCB assemblies. The position involves occasional assembly, soldering, troubleshooting, and prototype validation tasks. The engineer must be able to regularly lift up to 10 pounds and occasionally up to 25 pounds when handling equipment and prototypes.
