Job description

The Senior Computer Network Engineer provides senior-level engineering, architecture, integration, automation, and operational support for complex Department of Defense (DoD) enterprise and tactical network environments. This position requires extensive hands-on experience supporting secure network and data center infrastructure, including Windows and Linux servers, virtualization, storage, encryption technologies, network management platforms, and mission-critical systems operating across classified environments.

The Senior Computer Network Engineer serves as a technical subject matter expert responsible for designing, implementing, troubleshooting, maintaining, and optimizing network and systems infrastructure supporting TS/SCI environments and forward-deployed tactical operations. The position requires the ability to independently diagnose complex infrastructure and encryption issues, develop repeatable technical solutions, and operate within established DoD change control, cybersecurity, configuration management, and technical order processes.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Perform senior-level network and systems engineering, architecture, integration, implementation, and troubleshooting within DoD enterprise and tactical environments.
  • Design, configure, integrate, maintain, and optimize network infrastructure supporting mission-critical classified and tactical systems.
  • Provide hands-on administration and engineering support for Windows and/or Linux servers, virtualization platforms, enterprise storage systems, and data center infrastructure.
  • Support systems operating within TS/SCI networks, adhering to applicable DoD cybersecurity, configuration management, change control, and operational security requirements.
  • Develop, review, and implement technical changes through established change control and configuration management processes, ensuring system baselines and documentation remain accurate and current.
  • Apply DevOps and CI/CD principles to improve repeatability, standardization, automation, configuration consistency, and deployment reliability across supported environments.
  • Develop and maintain automation workflows to reduce manual configuration activities and improve network and systems administration efficiency.
  • Perform network topology analysis, fault isolation, performance analysis, and root-cause troubleshooting across complex enterprise and tactical environments.
  • Analyze network and server logs to identify system anomalies, configuration issues, performance degradation, security concerns, and operational failures.
  • Maintain accurate technical documentation, configuration records, troubleshooting procedures, implementation plans, and technical orders.
  • Coordinate with cybersecurity personnel, system administrators, network engineers, tactical operators, program leadership, vendors, and other technical stakeholders to resolve complex operational issues.

The Senior Computer Network Engineer will routinely utilize and administer enterprise network and systems management platforms, including:

  • Nautobot - IP Address Management (IPAM), network source-of-truth, and device management.
  • AWX - Administration, configuration automation, orchestration, and repeatable infrastructure deployments.
  • Active Directory - Enterprise authentication, authorization, account administration, and directory services.
  • Forward Networks - Network topology visualization, path analysis, verification, and fault isolation.
  • Splunk - Detailed network and server logging, event analysis, troubleshooting, and operational monitoring.
  • ServiceNow - Incident and ticket management, change tracking, workflow management, and technical order tracking.
  • GemOne and Chimera - Secure network and encryption device management and troubleshooting.

EDUCATION & EXPEDRIENCE:

  • Several years of progressively responsible experience performing systems engineering, network engineering, and/or systems architecture within DoD enterprise or tactical environments.
  • Demonstrated hands-on experience supporting Windows and/or Linux server environments.
  • Experience with enterprise virtualization platforms, storage technologies, server infrastructure, and data center systems.
  • Prior experience supporting DoD classified environments, including TS/SCI networks.

DESIRED EXPERIENCE:

  • Experience supporting forward-deployed DoD tactical network environments.
  • Experience troubleshooting mission-critical network and encryption failures under operational time constraints.
  • Advanced experience with infrastructure automation and configuration management.
  • Experience developing automated workflows using AWX, Ansible, or comparable technologies.
  • Experience integrating network management, IPAM, logging, topology analysis, and IT service management platforms.
  • Strong understanding of enterprise and tactical network resiliency, redundancy, high availability, and continuity of operations.
  • Experience developing technical implementation plans, engineering documentation, standard operating procedures, technical orders, and configuration baselines.

KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS:

  • The successful Senior Computer Network Engineer will demonstrate advanced technical troubleshooting, systems thinking, network architecture expertise, automation proficiency, secure communications expertise, disciplined configuration management, and sound technical judgment. The position requires an engineer capable of working independently on highly complex problems while coordinating effectively across multidisciplinary engineering and operational teams in support of mission-critical DoD systems.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of DoD change control, configuration management, system baselining, cybersecurity, and technical documentation processes.
  • Strong understanding of TCP/IP, routing, switching, IP addressing, network segmentation, secure communications, and enterprise network architecture.

Demonstrated experience configuring, maintaining, and troubleshooting network encryption

  • technologies.
  • Strong knowledge of encryptor firmware, configuration management, version control/enforcement, operational requirements, and troubleshooting best practices.
  • Experience troubleshooting complex network and encryption problems based on incomplete customer-reported symptoms and operational information.
  • Working knowledge of DevOps, CI/CD, infrastructure automation, and repeatable deployment methodologies.
  • Demonstrated experience with Nautobot, AWX, Active Directory, Forward Networks, Splunk, and ServiceNow, or directly comparable enterprise technologies.
  • Proficiency with GemOne and Chimera management platforms.
  • Ability to independently troubleshoot complex technical problems and perform root-cause analysis in mission-critical environments.
  • Ability to communicate highly technical information clearly to engineering personnel, program leadership, customers, and operational users.
