What is a senior composite engineer?

Senior Composite Engineers are experienced professionals who design, develop, and optimize materials made from two or more constituent substances—known as composites—for use in a variety of industries such as aerospace, automotive, marine, and sports equipment. They lead projects involving the selection, testing, and manufacturing of composite materials to ensure they meet specific performance and safety standards. These engineers often supervise teams, collaborate with other departments, and use advanced software tools to analyze material behaviors. Their expertise helps create lighter, stronger, and more durable products.

What is the difference between Senior Composite Engineer vs Composite Technician?

AspectSenior Composite EngineerComposite Technician
Required CredentialsBachelor's or Master's in Engineering, certifications in composites (e.g., NDT, FAA certifications)High school diploma or technical training, certifications in composite layup and safety
Work EnvironmentDesign offices, R&D labs, manufacturing facilitiesManufacturing floors, composite layup stations, quality control areas
Employer & Industry UsageAircraft, aerospace, automotive, sports equipment industriesComposite manufacturing and assembly facilities in similar industries
Common Search & ComparisonSenior Composite Engineer vs Composite Technician

The Senior Composite Engineer typically holds a higher level of education and oversees design, analysis, and development of composite materials. In contrast, the Composite Technician focuses on hands-on manufacturing, layup, and quality control. Both roles are essential in composite manufacturing but differ in responsibilities, credentials, and work environment.

What are some common challenges faced by senior composite engineers in managing multidisciplinary project teams?

Senior Composite Engineers often collaborate with professionals from various disciplines, such as design, manufacturing, and quality assurance. A common challenge is ensuring effective communication between team members with different technical backgrounds, which is crucial for integrating composite materials into complex products. Balancing project timelines while addressing technical hurdles, such as material selection or process optimization, also requires strong project management skills. Proactively facilitating cross-functional meetings and providing clear documentation can help navigate these challenges and keep projects on track.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a senior composite engineer?

To thrive as a Senior Composite Engineer, you need expertise in composite materials, structural analysis, and manufacturing processes, typically supported by a bachelor's or master's degree in engineering and several years of industry experience. Familiarity with CAD software, finite element analysis (FEA) tools, and industry-specific standards like ASME or ASTM is often required. Strong problem-solving, leadership, and communication skills are crucial for managing projects and collaborating with cross-functional teams. These skills ensure innovative, reliable composite solutions and successful project execution in high-performance engineering environments.

Job description

Description
Sr. Manufacturing Engineer, Filament Winding
GEOTEK manufactures engineered composite products for global infrastructure. We're looking for a senior engineer to own our filament winding manufacturing technology-designing next-generation equipment and production cells, leading multimillion-dollar capital projects, and solving the complex problems that come with scaling a proprietary process.
This isn't a maintain-the-line role. You'll set technical direction, work directly with operations and executive leadership, and build manufacturing systems that outlast you.
What you'll do:
• Own the technical direction of GEOTEK's filament winding processes
• Design and develop new manufacturing equipment, tooling, and automation
• Lead capital projects end to end- scope, budget, schedule, commissioning, startup
• Lead root cause investigations and implement permanent corrective actions
• Drive process improvements that move safety, quality, productivity, and capacity
• Partner with suppliers on solutions that don't exist off the shelf
• Develop standards, work instructions, and documentation that support training and knowledge transfer
• Mentor engineers and production teams
What we need:
• 5-10 years in continuous processing manufacturing (composites/filament winding/pultrusion is a plus, not required)
• Strong CAD skills- SolidWorks parts, assemblies, and drawings with GD&T per ANSI Y14.5
• Proven lean/process improvement mindset- you identify inefficiencies and own solutions
• Demonstrated ownership of projects from concept through implementation
• Hands-on problem solver who runs multiple projects independently and sets their own priorities
• Clear communicator with everyone from line workers to executives
• Bachelor's degree in engineering
Nice to have:
Formal GD&T training
Experience designing manufacturing tooling and equipment
Familiarity with thermoset resin systems (polyester, vinyl-ester, urethane)
Physical Work Conditions
Time should be split between the floor and the office or meeting rooms ranging anywhere from 25% to 75% on the production floor or engineering labs. While working on the floor there will be work with and around moving machinery, fumes and chemicals. Office work requires sitting at a desk, using a computer and phone.
Compensation
The compensation range for this position is $98,174 - $155,239. Final offers may vary based on several factors, including experience, skills, and qualifications. The posted range represents the expected earning potential for this position within the current organizational budget and market conditions.
Who We Are
For over 30 years, GEOTEK has been internationally recognized for industry leading composite technologies, engineering, and service. The company has grown PUPI® into the leading global provider of fiberglass crossarms and is committed to adding and developing other market-leading composite brands for the world's infrastructure. The company was founded in 1990 to manufacture and market Common Sense Fencing and other pultruded fiberglass products. Early on GEOTEK also began producing utility composite crossarms for Pultruded Utility Products, Inc., a company it acquired in 2000 and renamed Pultruded Utility Products International (PUPI) to reflect the global opportunity for these products. PUPI (pronounced "puppy") is a brand of GEOTEK.
Using proprietary processes and several patented inventions, GEOTEK manufactures and distributes engineered fiberglass composites that are used by the transmission and distribution power lines and substations. The company is well positioned for sustained growth and profitability through market expansion and new product offerings.
Our Purpose
As the global leader in composite crossarms, we aim to broaden our engineered composite products in infrastructure applications with light poles and beyond.
