Job Description

The Senior Epic BI Developer is a highly skilled technical expert responsible for building, optimizing, and supporting Epic and non‑Epic analytics solutions and downstream data workflows in collaboration with the BI team. This role centers on hands‑on development, troubleshooting complex reporting issues, improving data pipelines, and ensuring high‑quality, reliable analytics products across the East Hawaii Region. The Senior Developer mentors’ BI staff, performs advanced SQL and Epic reporting development, and serves as the technical lead for BI operations, system enhancements, and analytics integrations. In addition, the Senior Developer acts as the primary escalation point for complex issues and supports the organization in shaping long‑term data governance and technical standards.

Location: This is an on-site position located in Hilo, Hawaii. The incumbent must be on-site at the time of hire.

Essential Job Functions:

Technical Leadership & BI Support
  • Serve as the top technical escalation point for Epic reporting issues, data integrity concerns, and analytics platform performance challenges.
  • Perform advanced troubleshooting, root-cause analysis, optimization, and issue resolution across Epic and non-Epic BI tools.
  • Ensure analytic environments remain stable, performant, and technically sound.
Downstream Workflow Development
  • Build, validate, and optimize downstream workflows including extracts, cubes, semantic layers, and automated data pipelines.
  • Improve pipeline reliability, data refresh performance, and workflow accuracy through hands-on engineering.
  • Verify correct movement of data across source systems, staging layers, and BI platforms.
Epic Reporting & BI Development
  • Develop complex SQL queries, metrics, dashboards, and analytic models using Epic and enterprise BI tools.
  • Own the technical development lifecycle including requirements translation, build, testing, and deployment.
  • Maintain reporting definitions, metadata, and Analytics Catalog content.
System Build & Epic Maintenance
  • Configure, test, and maintain Epic Foundation System components supporting analytics.
  • Lead technical execution for upgrades, releases, and changes impacting BI workflows.
  • Conduct environment testing, performance tuning, and validation of analytics components.
Technical Mentorship & Documentation
  • Mentor BI developers through hands-on instruction, best practices, and technical guidance.
  • Maintain documentation for workflows, downstream dependencies, and report logic.
  • Contribute to BI development standards and code governance.
Operational Optimization
  • Identify inefficiencies in backend workflows, reporting logic, and technical architecture.
  • Optimize pipeline jobs, extracts, and scheduled processes to ensure day-to-day reliability.
  • Support data consumers by resolving technical issues and refining reporting structures.

Qualifications:

Experience:

  • Minimum of seven (7) years of hands-on experience in analytics engineering, BI development, or technical systems support.
  • 5+ years direct experience with Epic reporting tools such as Clarity, Chronicles, Caboodle, and hold Epic Certifications in:  Cogito Fundamentals, Clarity & Caboodle Data Models.
    • Additional certifications in Epic revenue cycle or clinical applications highly preferred.

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Healthcare Administration, Communications, Computer Science, Information Technology, Healthcare Informatics, or a related field. Master’s degree highly preferred.

Additional Skills:

  • Expert-level SQL and dimensional data modeling skills.
  • Proficiency with BI tools such as SSRS, Tableau, and/or Power BI.
  • Strong technical troubleshooting and analytical problem-solving skills.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to independently manage technical tasks in complex analytics environments.
