Lead Counsel – Capital One Shopping Overview

Within Capital One's Retail Bank and Premium Products and Experiences business, Capital One Shopping operates a browser extension and mobile application that provides users with online shopping coupons, rewards, customized offers, and price comparison tools. We are seeking a Senior Director to lead the legal support for this high growth business.

Responsibilities
  • Providing strategic, clear and contextualized legal advice to business development, marketing, operations, product development, and tech teams on a variety of complex issues and topics
  • Translating applicable laws, regulations, and legal requirements into actionable advice
  • Developing and maintaining legal resources that are required for products, such as terms of service and other disclosures
  • Helping design and implement legal department and compliance processes to keep up with our growth and facilitate further expansion
  • Building relationships and collaborating with business stakeholders across Capital One
  • Understanding business needs and providing appropriate solutions to reach the desired goals
  • Working autonomously, but also working collaboratively with other members of the Legal Department to provide advice in a consistent, well-reasoned manner
Candidate Profile

Basic Qualifications
  • Juris Doctor from an accredited law school
  • Active member in good standing of at least one state bar
  • At least 10 years of experience as an attorney in a law firm, in‑house legal department, or government agency
  • At least 5 years of people leadership experience
Preferred Qualifications
  • 12+ years of experience in a law firm, in‑house legal department, or government agency
  • 7+ years of people leadership experience
  • Experience in affiliate marketing
  • Experience in software
  • Experience advising technology or financial services companies on marketing, regulatory, or product development matters
  • Ability to build collegial and effective relationships with attorneys, business managers, creative teams, analysts, project managers, and corporate compliance professionals
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills with the ability to influence others

Chicago, IL: $245,100 - $279,800 (Sr Director, Associate General Counsel)

McLean, VA: $269,600 - $307,700 (Sr Director, Associate General Counsel)

New York, NY: $294,100 - $335,700 (Sr Director, Associate General Counsel)

Plano, TX: $245,100 - $279,800 (Sr Director, Associate General Counsel)

Richmond, VA: $245,100 - $279,800 (Sr Director, Associate General Counsel)

Candidates hired to work in other locations will be subject to the pay range associated with that location, and the actual annualized salary amount offered to any candidate at the time of hire will be reflected solely in the candidate’s offer letter.

This role is also eligible to earn performance‑based incentive compensation, which may include cash bonus(es) and/or long‑term incentives (LTI). Incentives could be discretionary or non‑discretionary depending on the plan.
