What is a senior CNC?

Senior CNC Operators are experienced professionals who program, set up, and operate computer numerical control (CNC) machines to manufacture precision parts and components. They are responsible for interpreting technical drawings, selecting appropriate tools, ensuring machine calibration, and performing quality checks. Senior CNC Operators often mentor junior staff, troubleshoot complex machining issues, and contribute to process improvements in the manufacturing workflow. Their expertise helps maintain efficiency, accuracy, and safety in production environments.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a senior CNC?

To thrive as a Senior CNC Machinist, you need advanced machining skills, strong knowledge of CNC programming, blueprint reading, and typically a technical diploma or significant hands-on experience. Familiarity with CAD/CAM software, G-code, and modern CNC machinery, as well as relevant certifications like NIMS, are commonly expected. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication help ensure quality output and smooth workflow in team settings. These competencies are essential for producing precise components efficiently, minimizing errors, and maintaining high safety and quality standards in manufacturing.

What are common challenges faced by a senior CNC and how can they be managed?

Senior CNC Machinists often encounter challenges such as maintaining tight tolerances on complex parts, troubleshooting machine errors, and adapting to new software or equipment upgrades. Effective communication with engineering and quality teams is essential for resolving production issues quickly. Staying current with training and industry best practices helps in managing evolving technologies, while strong organizational skills aid in multitasking and prioritizing urgent projects. Proactively addressing these challenges leads to smoother operations and professional growth.

At a Glance

Company: Freeform Technologies
Location: Hawthorne, CA
Job Type: Full-Time
Pay Range: $45 – $65/hour (based on experience) + Stock Options
Shift: Flexible
Overtime: Yes, as needed
Experience Level: Senior
Work Authorization: Must be authorized to work in the U.S.

---

Why This Role Exists

This role exists because Freeform is scaling production.

Freeform is actively delivering production-scale metal parts for aerospace, defense, automation, and industrial customers. As production volume and part complexity increase, this role is critical to ensuring precision, throughput, and repeatability in post-print CNC machining.

As a Senior CNC Programmer, you’ll play a key role in bridging metal additive manufacturing and high-precision 5-axis CNC machining, helping define how next-generation manufacturing actually works on the shop floor.

---

The Work You’ll Be Doing

In this role, you will:

  • Program, set up, and run 5-axis DMG Mori CNC mills
  • Post-machine complex metal 3D printed parts to tight tolerances
  • Optimize toolpaths, speeds, feeds, and strategies for efficiency and part quality
  • Machine parts directly from blueprints and 3D CAD models
  • Hold tight tolerances (±0.001” and tighter depending on part)
  • Perform deburring, cleaning, and finishing operations
  • Inspect parts using micrometers, thread gauges, indicators, and probing
  • Support preventative maintenance and cutting fluid management
  • Collaborate closely with engineers to improve programs, fixtures, and automation
  • Contribute to process improvement initiatives focused on throughput and repeatability

This is a hands-on programming role, not a desk-only CAM position.

---

Machines, Controls & Software

You’ll work with equipment such as:

Machines:

  • DMG Mori 5-Axis CNC Machining Centers

Controls:

  • Siemens

CAM Software:

  • Mastercam (highly preferred)

Inspection Tools:

  • On-machine probing
  • Micrometers, indicators, thread gauges, precision hand tools

---

What We’re Looking For

Required:

  • 5+ years of 5-axis CNC mill programming experience
  • Strong experience with DMG Mori 5-axis machines
  • Proven ability machining aluminum, stainless steel, titanium, or Inconel
  • Deep understanding of setups, tooling, speeds/feeds, and optimization
  • Ability to read blueprints, GD&T, and CAD models

Preferred (Not Required):

  • Mastercam programming experience
  • Siemens control experience
  • Experience machining metal 3D printed parts
  • NTMA certification or equivalent formal training
  • Experience with automation, fixtures, or multi-axis optimization
  • Comfortable operating cranes, forklifts, and shop equipment

---

Materials You’ll Work With

  • Aluminum
  • Stainless Steel
  • Titanium
  • Inconel & nickel-based alloys

---

Why Machinists Like Working at Freeform

Machinists choose Freeform because:

  • Modern 5-axis CNC equipment and cutting-edge technology
  • Real collaboration between machinists, programmers, and engineers
  • High-skill work — not button pushing
  • Stable, production-focused workflows
  • Competitive hourly pay plus meaningful equity ownership
  • A clean, organized, state-of-the-art facility
  • Opportunities to influence how manufacturing scales globally

This is a place for machinists who want to build something new, not just run jobs.

---

Pay, Benefits & Schedule

Pay: $45 – $65/hour (DOE)
Top of range reserved for exceptional technical depth and experience

Benefits Include:

  • Significant pre-IPO stock option packages
  • 100% employer-paid Medical, Dental & Vision insurance
  • Traditional & Roth 401(k)
  • Relocation assistance
  • Paid vacation, sick leave, and holidays
  • Generous paid parental leave
  • Free daily catered lunch & dinner
  • Casual dress, flexible hours, and team events
