What is a senior CNC programmer?

Senior CNC Programmers are experienced professionals who create, modify, and optimize computer numerical control (CNC) programs for manufacturing machinery. They interpret engineering drawings and technical specifications to write precise code that directs machines to cut, shape, or assemble materials. In addition to programming, they often oversee junior programmers, troubleshoot production issues, and work closely with engineers and machinists to ensure high-quality parts are produced efficiently.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a senior CNC programmer?

To thrive as a Senior CNC Programmer, you need advanced knowledge of CNC machining, blueprint reading, GD&T, and experience with CAD/CAM software, often backed by a degree or technical certification in manufacturing or engineering. Expertise in programming languages such as G-code, and proficiency with software like Mastercam or Siemens NX, are typically required. Strong problem-solving, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help you collaborate with machinists and engineers to optimize production. These skills ensure precision, efficiency, and high-quality output in complex manufacturing environments.

How does a senior CNC programmer typically collaborate with engineers and machinists during the production process?

Senior CNC Programmers work closely with engineers to review technical drawings and specifications, ensuring that the machining strategies align with design intent. They also regularly communicate with machinists on the shop floor to address any issues that arise during setup or production, such as tool selection, programming adjustments, or troubleshooting errors. Effective collaboration is key for optimizing manufacturing efficiency, minimizing errors, and delivering high-quality finished parts.

What is the difference between Senior Cnc Programmer vs Cnc Machinist?

AspectSenior Cnc ProgrammerCnc Machinist
CredentialsTypically requires programming certifications, technical degrees, or extensive experienceUsually needs machining experience, technical training, or certifications in machine operation
Work EnvironmentDesigning, programming, and optimizing CNC machines, often in office or engineering settingsOperating CNC machines on the shop floor, performing setup and manual adjustments
ResponsibilitiesDeveloping CNC programs, troubleshooting, and improving manufacturing processesSetting up machines, loading tools, and executing machining tasks

The main difference between a Senior Cnc Programmer and a Cnc Machinist lies in their focus: programmers develop and optimize CNC code, while machinists operate and set up machines. Both roles require technical skills, but the programmer's role is more design and process-oriented, whereas the machinist's role is hands-on manufacturing.

Job description

Senior CNC Programmer (3, 4 & 5-Axis)

Location: Tullahoma, TN

Employment Type: Full-Time

Relocation Assistance: $5,000 Allowance Available

Security Clearance: DoD Secret Clearance preferred (or willingness to obtain)

Citizenship Requirement: US Citizenship Required

About CG Model Tek

At CG Model Tek, we are pushing the boundaries of aerospace innovation. Operating out of a state-of-the-art 57,000 sq. ft. manufacturing facility near Arnold Air Force Base (AEDC), our team engineers and manufactures high-precision wind tunnel models, hypersonic test hardware, and complex flight hardware supporting the future of aerospace R&D and national defense.

If you are a driven CNC Programmer looking to work on complex, high-impact hardware in a collaborative, tech-forward environment, we want to hear from you.

Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced CNC Programmer to analyze, toolpath, and optimize complex 3D parts and exotic alloys for next-generation aerospace projects. Working with Mastercam (2023 or newer), you will take parts from initial CAD concepts to precision-machined reality.

In this role, you won't just generate toolpaths—you will work hand-in-hand with our engineering team and skilled machinists on the shop floor to solve tough manufacturing challenges and ensure flawless execution.

What You’ll Do

  • Program Complex Geometry: Create precise, efficient multi-axis toolpaths (3, 4, and 5-axis milling) for intricate 3D aerospace and research hardware.
  • Collaborate Across Engineering & Shop Floor: Partner directly with design engineers and hands-on machinists to refine manufacturing strategies, troubleshoot setups, and optimize cycle times.
  • Develop Detailed Shop Documentation: Generate clean setup sheets, clear operator instructions, and comprehensive tool lists to streamline production.
  • Analyze & Problem-Solve: Evaluate complex drawings and CAD models to select optimal cutting tools, workholding setups, speeds, feeds, and machining sequences for standard and exotic materials.
  • Drive Quality & Precision: Ensure all programs deliver exact tolerances required for extreme aerospace and hypersonic environments.

What We’re Looking For

  • Experience: 5+ years of hands-on experience programming complex parts for precision machining environments.
  • Software Proficiency: Deep expertise in Mastercam (2023 or newer). (Experience with Vericut verification software is a plus).
  • Multi-Axis Capability: Proven track record in 3, 4, and 5-axis programming.
  • Machining Background: Practical shop-floor machining experience is strongly preferred—you know how tools behave in real life, not just on a screen.
  • Clearance & Citizenship: Must be a US Citizen. An active DoD Secret Clearance is preferred, but candidates eligible and willing to apply for a clearance are welcome.
  • Drive & Passion: A high standard for accuracy, a strong work ethic, and a genuine interest in cutting-edge aerospace technology.

Why Join CG Model Tek?

  • Competitive Compensation & Full Benefits: We offer a robust benefits package including comprehensive medical/insurance options, plus a competitive paid time off (PTO) and holiday schedule.
  • Great Work Environment: Work with modern, high-capability machinery (Mazak, Haas, EDM) in a spacious, climate-controlled facility alongside some of the best talent in the industry.
  • Relocation Package: $5,000 relocation allowance to help smooth your move to Middle Tennessee.
  • Why Tullahoma, TN?
    • No State Income Tax—keep more of what you earn!
    • Excellent quality of life, friendly communities, and great schools—ideal for individuals and families alike.
    • Surrounded by Middle Tennessee's beautiful lakes, state parks, and outdoor recreation, with easy access to Nashville and Chattanooga.
