Job description

Job Title: CNC Mill 5-Axis Setup/Operator
Location: San Jose, CA
Reports To: Senior CNC Mill Programmer
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
Position Summary
The CNC Mill 5-Axis Setup/Operator is responsible for setting up, operating, and maintaining 5-axis CNC milling machines to produce complex precision components according to customer and engineering specifications. This role involves reading and interpreting technical drawings, ensuring tight tolerances, and maintaining high standards of quality and efficiency.
Key Responsibilities
  • Machine Setup & Operation
  • Read and interpret blueprints, CAD models, and GD&T specifications.
  • Install and secure fixtures, tooling, and workpieces for 5-axis CNC milling operations.
  • Load and verify CNC programs (Fanuc, Haas, Siemens, or similar) and make offsets or adjustments as needed.
  • Set machine parameters to achieve optimal cutting conditions for various materials.
  • Quality Control
  • Perform first article inspections (FAI) and in-process inspections using precision measuring instruments (CMM, micrometers, calipers, height gauges, bore gauges, etc.).
  • Monitor production runs and make necessary adjustments to maintain dimensional accuracy.
  • Document setup sheets, inspection results, and production logs.
  • Collaboration & Troubleshooting
  • Work closely with programming and engineering teams to optimize machining strategies.
  • Troubleshoot machining issues such as chatter, tool wear, or dimensional deviations.
  • Train and assist other operators when necessary.
  • Maintenance & Safety
  • Perform routine maintenance, cleaning, and lubrication of equipment.
  • Follow all company safety guidelines and maintain a clean, organized work area.

Work Environment
  • Machine shop environment with exposure to noise, coolant, and moving machinery.
  • Requires standing for extended periods and lifting up to 50 lbs.

Requirements
Qualifications
Required:
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • 4+ years of CNC milling experience, including at least 2 years on large format 5-axis machines.
  • Strong understanding of multi-axis machining and work holding principles.
  • Proficient in reading blueprints and applying GD&T principles.
  • Skilled in using precision measuring tools and inspection equipment.

Preferred:
  • Experience with complex aerospace, medical, or automotive components.
  • Familiarity with CAM software (Mastercam, NX, Fusion 360, etc.).
  • Knowledge of ISO 9001 or AS9100 quality standards.
