As of Aug 17, 2026, the average yearly pay for senior chemist in the United States is $86,458.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $67,000.00 and $98,500.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What does a senior chemist do?

Senior chemists do much of the same work as other chemists in a lab, but they have several years of research experience and often hold graduate degrees. As a senior chemist, you conduct experiments and analyze testing of elements and compounds for a company or organization. Specific job duties vary, depending on the organization and industry. For example, you may work on product development for a makeup company, test medicinal compounds for a pharmaceutical lab, or examine the safety of natural resources for a government agency. You may also supervise other lab chemists and lab assistants and troubleshoot issues with the research project or equipment. To become a senior chemist, you need a bachelor’s degree in chemistry, biochemistry, or a related field, though many employers prefer candidates with graduate degrees. You also need several years of lab experience to work your way up to a senior chemist position.

What does a senior chemist do?

A Senior Chemist is responsible for leading and conducting complex chemical research and experiments in laboratories. They develop and optimize chemical processes, analyze substances, and ensure quality control in manufacturing or research settings. Senior Chemists often supervise junior staff, interpret data, prepare technical reports, and collaborate with cross-functional teams to solve technical problems and innovate new products or solutions. Their expertise is vital in industries such as pharmaceuticals, materials science, environmental testing, and more.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a senior chemist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Senior Chemist, you need advanced knowledge of chemistry principles, laboratory techniques, and a relevant degree such as a master's or Ph.D. in chemistry or a related field. Familiarity with analytical instruments (such as HPLC, GC-MS), laboratory information management systems (LIMS), and certifications like GLP or GMP compliance are typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, leadership abilities, and effective communication set outstanding Senior Chemists apart. These skills and qualifications are crucial for ensuring accurate research results, maintaining safety standards, and leading successful project teams.

What are some common challenges faced by senior chemists when leading research projects?

Senior Chemists often face the challenge of balancing hands-on laboratory work with overseeing and mentoring junior staff. Managing multiple research projects simultaneously requires strong organizational skills and the ability to troubleshoot complex experiments. Additionally, they must ensure that all team members comply with safety protocols and that results meet regulatory standards. Effective communication and collaboration with cross-functional teams, such as engineering and quality assurance, are also essential for project success.

What is the difference between Senior Chemist vs Chemist?

AspectSenior ChemistChemist
Required CredentialsBachelor's or Master's in Chemistry, extensive experienceBachelor's degree in Chemistry or related field
Work EnvironmentResearch labs, manufacturing, quality controlResearch labs, quality assurance, production
Employer & Industry UsagePharmaceuticals, chemicals, manufacturingResearch institutions, industrial labs, manufacturing

The main difference between a Senior Chemist and a Chemist lies in experience and responsibility. Senior Chemists typically have more years of experience, advanced skills, and oversee complex projects, while Chemists are often entry- to mid-level professionals focused on executing experiments and data collection. Both roles are vital in the chemistry industry, but Senior Chemists usually take on leadership and strategic responsibilities.

Job description

We are seeking a technically strong Senior Chemist who thrives in collaborative environments and values diverse perspectives, recognizing that inclusive teamwork drives scientific excellence and innovation.

This individual contributor role sits within Healthcare’s Peripheral Vascular Health (PVH) Operating Unit Research and Development (R&D) team. PVH is dedicated to the treatment of peripheral arterial and venous diseases. We offer a comprehensive suite of products and therapies to treat vascular disease — disorders of the circulatory system outside of the brain and heart. Our goal is to help healthcare professionals save limbs, reduce pain, and treat disease so that patients can return to what they love.

The Senior Chemist applies fundamental chemistry principles to develop, characterize, and validate safe and effective medical device products that address unmet patient needs in venous disease. Responsibilities include providing chemistry technical support to released and emerging products, including method execution, data interpretation, and material- and process-related investigation. This role requires close collaboration with cross‑functional partners in R&D, Manufacturing, and Quality to deliver business and technical objectives.

A Day in the Life

As a Senior Chemist, you will focus on advancing existing technologies and supporting the introduction of new technologies and therapies. You will independently plan and execute projects from design through implementation, applying specialized technical expertise while adhering to established policies and quality systems.

  • Conduct exploratory research to generate new knowledge and potential products.
  • Conceive, organize, promote, and execute ideas and plans to expand chemistry’s role in product discovery and chemical approaches to meet exploratory objectives.
  • Develop research proposals that provide a technically and economically sound basis for new or improved products, synthetic methods, processes, and analytical or physical testing techniques.
  • Recommend utilization of results, adjustments to project scope, or termination of projects based on technical findings.
  • Plan and execute larger, moderately complex assignments independently under limited supervision; lead small projects or processes as needed.
  • Perform sample preparation, testing, and data generation using a range of analytical instrumentation; operate and troubleshoot analytical equipment.
  • Lead and/or participate in the development, qualification, and implementation of new analytical instrumentation and automation technologies.
  • Lead and/or perform analytical test method development, transfer, qualification, and validation.
  • Lead and/or perform studies supporting process characterization, optimization, and validation.
  • Perform statistical analysis and interpretation of experimental data; provide in-depth technical assessments and recommendations.
  • Author technical protocols, reports, and presentations of an analytical and interpretive nature; communicate results to cross‑functional audiences.
  • Drive continuous improvement of processes, systems, and products to enhance performance within the job area.
  • Develop strong partnerships and work effectively with cross‑functional teams.
  • Act as a technical mentor by providing guidance, coaching, training, and review of work performed by less‑experienced professionals.
  • If required, support day‑to‑day operations of the R&D analytical laboratory, including inventory management, supply ordering, instrument maintenance, and implementation of lab safety practices.
  • Perform all job functions in compliance with applicable GMP, GLP, ISO standards, FDA and international regulatory requirements, and Good Documentation Practices (GDP).
Must Have – Minimum Qualifications
  • Baccalaureate degree with a minimum of 4 years of relevant experience OR Master’s degree with a minimum of 2 years of relevant experience OR PhD with 0 years of relevant experience.
Nice to Have
  • Advanced degree in chemistry, chemical engineering, or related technical field.
  • 5 years of experience in R&D within medical devices or pharmaceutical industries.
  • Industry experience with new product development and sustaining project support.
  • Expertise in combination device analytical test method development and validation (for example, HPLC, dissolution, bioassay).
  • Formulation and testing experience with adhesives; cyanoacrylates preferred.
  • Expertise with analytical instrumentation, including troubleshooting (for example, dissolution USP apparatuses, HPLC‑DAD, GPC, GC‑FID/MS, Karl Fischer, FT‑IR, UV‑Vis).
  • Strong problem‑solving capabilities.
  • Solid oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to manage and prioritize multiple tasks and lead projects.
  • Experience in moderate and complex data analyses using statistical techniques.
  • Experience using chromatography software such as Empower and MassHunter.
  • Experience using common electronic documentation software (for example, MAP, Agile, or equivalent).
