What are some typical challenges a Senior Camera Systems Engineer might face when integrating new camera technologies into existing products?

A Senior Camera Systems Engineer often encounters challenges such as ensuring compatibility between new camera modules and legacy hardware, optimizing image processing algorithms for varying environments, and balancing performance with power consumption. These engineers frequently collaborate with cross-functional teams—including software, hardware, and product design—to troubleshoot integration issues and meet product requirements. Staying current with rapidly evolving imaging technologies and standards is also critical, as it directly impacts product quality and launch timelines.

What are Senior Camera Systems Engineers?

Senior Camera Systems Engineers are experienced professionals who design, develop, and optimize camera systems for various applications, such as smartphones, automotive, security, or industrial use. They work on both hardware and software aspects, including sensor selection, lens design, image signal processing, and system integration. These engineers often lead teams, collaborate with cross-functional groups, and ensure that camera systems meet performance, quality, and reliability standards. Their expertise is critical for delivering high-quality imaging solutions in modern devices.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Senior Camera Systems Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Senior Camera Systems Engineer, you need a strong background in electrical engineering, optics, image processing, and experience with camera hardware design, typically supported by a relevant engineering degree. Expertise with tools such as MATLAB, Python, CAD software, and familiarity with industry standards and certifications like ISO or IEEE are often required. Outstanding problem-solving skills, effective communication, and the ability to collaborate across multidisciplinary teams set top candidates apart. These skills and qualifications are crucial for developing innovative camera solutions that meet technical requirements and integrate seamlessly into complex systems.

What is the difference between Senior Camera Systems Engineer vs Camera Systems Technician?

AspectSenior Camera Systems EngineerCamera Systems Technician
CredentialsBachelor's or higher in Engineering, certifications in camera systems or networkingTechnical diploma or associate degree, certifications in camera installation and maintenance
Work EnvironmentDesign, development, system integration, project managementInstallation, troubleshooting, maintenance on-site or in the field
Industry UsageSecurity, broadcasting, surveillance, aerospaceSecurity firms, broadcasting companies, surveillance service providers

The Senior Camera Systems Engineer focuses on designing and integrating complex camera systems, requiring advanced engineering skills and project oversight. In contrast, the Camera Systems Technician handles installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting tasks. Both roles are essential in the camera systems industry but differ in responsibilities, expertise, and work scope.

Job description

Embedded Software Engineer (Camera Systems)
Department: Software
Employment Type: Full Time
Location: Redondo Beach
Compensation: $120,000 - $155,000 / year
Description
As an Embedded Software Engineer for Camera Systems at Impulse, your primary responsibility will be to design, implement, and maintain firmware for image capture and processing systems on spacecraft. You will collaborate with avionics, flight software, and GNC engineers to interface with imaging hardware, support ground and flight tests, and ensure high reliability under harsh environmental conditions.
Responsibilities
  • Develop low-level drivers and control software for camera modules using interfaces like MIPI CSI-2, USB, SPI, and I2C.
  • Interface with commercial and custom image sensors, implementing robust and efficient data pipelines.
  • Implement camera configuration, triggering, and synchronization logic.
  • Support data capture and streaming during ground tests and in-flight operations.
  • Collaborate with image processing and perception teams to define firmware requirements and APIs.
  • Contribute to bring-up, debugging, and tuning of camera subsystems in hardware-in-the-loop setups.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or related technical field.
  • 2+ years of experience writing C/C++ code for embedded systems, preferably in imaging or robotic applications.
  • Demonstrated experience using oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, hardware debuggers, and source-level debuggers to troubleshoot problems at all layers of the stack.
  • Demonstrated understanding of I2C, SPI, and MIPI-based camera interfaces.

Preferred Skills and Experience
  • Familiarity with microcontroller and SoC architectures, especially those used in vision applications.
  • Hands-on experience integrating image sensors and camera modules into embedded systems.
  • Familiarity with image pipeline concepts such as exposure control, gain tuning, and calibration.
  • Understanding of real-time data handling and buffering for high-rate image streams.
  • Exposure to radiation-tolerant imaging design or fault detection in visual systems.

Additional Information:
Compensation bands are determined by role, level, location, and alignment with market data. Individual level and base pay is determined on a case-by-case basis and may vary based on job-related skills, education, experience, technical capabilities and internal equity.
