The purpose of this position is to preserve safe building conditions by ensuring the quality and integrity of residential and commercial buildings. This is accomplished by inspecting buildings and enforcing code standards, regulations and ordinances. Other duties may include examining plans and specifications, report preparation, providing information and assistance to contractors, builders and citizens, resolving concerns and interfacing with other City employees and citizens. This position does not provide direction to other employees.
This position may be filled at the Building Inspector or Senior Building Inspector level, depending on the selected candidate's experience level.
Hiring Range:
Building Inspector: $51,189 - 63,448
Senior Building Inspector: $56,654 - $70,150

  • Provides premier customer service to internal and external customers by responding to requests in a timely and professional manner.
  • Enforces building and zoning codes, regulations and ordinances by inspecting commercial and residential buildings, examining plans and specifications, ensuring building code standards are met, entering data into computer, preparing reports and studying and researching new case requirements.
  • Provides information and assistance by conferring with contractors, builders and citizens, explaining and interpreting code requirements and restrictions, resolving concerns and returning telephone calls.
  • Determines if building plans are in accordance with current codes and ordinances by reviewing building plans, comparing plans to codes and guidelines for construction and completing appropriate paperwork to document decisions.
  • Maintains accurate records by interpreting plans and diagrams, figuring floor loads and roof calculations, detecting code non-compliance, directing owners, contracts and developers toward compliance, making permanent records and reports and completing inspection compliance notifications.
  • Regular attendance required.

Requirements for Building Inspector:
  • Six months to one year of advanced study or training past the high school equivalency.
  • At least one (1) year of related experience required.
  • Valid TX Driver's License required.
  • Texas State Plumbing Inspector's License within one year of hire.
Requirements for Senior Building Inspector:
  • Six months to one year of advanced study or training past the high school equivalency.
  • At least five (5) years of related experience required.
  • Valid TX Driver's License required.
  • Combination Inspection Residential Inspector certification required.
  • Texas State Plumbing Inspector's License required.
